Popped in the other night....what a transformation, and a lovely welcome when I arrived. Several ales on - all Badgers. Was served a decent pint (£3.90). Decided to stay for a bite and wasn't disappointed.

Pilgrim, The Cyder House is open and under new management. Very pleasant village pub. Great food.
Is this pub still open???????????????????????
First visit for many years as I'm not keen on Badger Beers. However friends picked it for evening meal and we were very surprised to find Thatchers Cider, Upham Tipster, Hogs Back HBB and Firebird Heritage XX on. Apparently Hall and Woodhouse still own the premises but it is now free from tie. It would appear they are struggling a bit by there being a few items not available on the menu but what we had was good. A note on the website saying it hasn't been updated due to lack of payment doesn't help their log term credibility. Worryingly we were the last customers to leave just after 10pm. They deserve better so give it a go.

On a windy Thursday walk from Godalming the Ramble Then Lunch took lunch at the Cyder House.
Modern internal decoration is at odds with the exterior appearance. Inside the pub was empty and stayed so until shortly before we left when one other man entered. I know it's January but...
Our visit started inauspiciously. Beers were Sussex Bitter. TEA and Badgers First Gold. I plumped for the TEA but it gave up the ghost half way through my pint being poured. As this was probably the first one of the day who checked it first ? I then tried to pay for the round but the computerised till failed as well.
No matter. As it was empty we had plenty of choice for seats. For lunch we ordered a schnitzel and two "lightly breaded haddock with thin chips". The schnitzel was good but the fish, whilst very hot, had a curious texture on the outside - "lightly" seems to mean "soft". " I like my fish and chips to have a bit of crunch" said my colleague, and who can blame him. The thin chips were unusual too - a sort of anorexic jacket wedge.
The beer we had was good so no issue there. The two staff on duty were also very attentive - but given the circumstances they should have been. It would be interesting to re-visit this pub when it was busier - assuming such a thing happens.
What has happened? I have'nt been for a while but it's lost the charm it used to have and the standard of the food is shocking. It used to be a great pub after its last overhaul. has it got new tenants? Will give it another try but if it is as bad I won't return.
Went in for Sunday roast on a recommendation from a good friend of mine, I now owe him a beer what a great meal! The place was packed the great weather probably helped as the garden was full. Service was good and prompt given how busy it was it made our trip even better. Good wine also a massive bonus which I took advantage of as I wasn't driving. All in all a beautiful little pub doing a great job
Lovely building in a lovely village, but it all goes wrong after that.
Very very long wait for food Out of the 7 meals ordered they forgot 2, so had to wait even longer They asked what sauces were required, then bought them after the meal was finished The crab linguini (Main) was tiny and largely devoid of crab.
Other diners were also getting very frustrated, with the dreadfull service.
To be fair they did take some money off the bill, but really need to do so much better.
2/10

A strangly modern pub situated in probably the best kept village in Surrey.
Nothing special.
Its a nice pub with a simple menu and reasonable beer. However if you fancy an evening out I can't recommend. A simple menu relies on perfect cooking and good flavours, we (3) had lamb shank off the specials board and the lamb was obviously reheated, dry and flavourless. The mash was good, but the gravy despite looking the part had absolutely no depth or flavour, the side order of veg was reminiscent of school dinners. Judging by other reviews we were unlucky, but a good pub/restaurant needs to be consistent. The managers comment that the shank was eating well at lunchtime didn't really compensate for the fact that it was very poor in the evening. Standards gentlemen!
Marvelous food. Had scallops and then chicken in stilton sauce. Husband and Sister had lamb shank. We took our children and ate early so had the restaurant to ourselves almost. Will definitely go back here especially having a play on the local playground before!
We ate here on a busy Saturday lunchtime, weekend before last. All tables taken, and a surprising number of families, but not too noisy. Staff were clued up and engaging. We ordered a pasta and a pie off the specials: the pasta was tasty, hot and a generous serving; the pie enjoyable (if unexceptionable) with a good serving of veg. We both followed with chocolate brownies: rich and gooey, with white chocolate ice cream, enough to finish off us both! Prices a wee bit on the high side, though pretty average round here for a decent meal. As one might hope given the pub name, there were at least two decent draught ciders available. Parking looks a bit tight, though may be available on the road outside. We were able to take our sister's dog into the dining area ("well behaved only"). And there's space to tie up two horses outside, so we'll be back in the summer... .
Visited last week. Good food and tanglefoot, some would say prices on the steep side but I feel is quite justified by the portion sizes. Great atmospher too. Would reccommend to all.
This is my local and although it's more gastropub than "local" it is still a great improvement than what was here before. The food is consistently good and always tasty, can recommend the salt and pepper squid! They are also making a real effort with the cider and ales too. Finally I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
Good edge of town pub situated in a rather bizarre garden area but do not be dismayed and the 'Cyder' is also very good here.
Lovely for easy long lunch. Took inlaws who live in nearby Guildford and we left feeling fat and happy. Prices on the high side but portions were generous - my pudding defeated me and i had to leave it unfinished altho it was delicious which is unprecedented. I was pregnant so cannot comment on the beer range but am a real ale lover so will need to revisit once little one arrives! Good service and really nice atmosphere. Noticed there was a welcoming looking garden and play area. Thought the decor (esp car park signs) was fun and cosy. Was a little surprised at some of the mean reviews. Our experience was so very positive.
I chanced upon this pub while walking, seeing the name I went in in search of a real cider. One of the staff said they had Addlestones so I settled for that. Then I noticed a poster for Angus Whitehead ciders and asked about it. One of the staff said that was just a decoration but then another said they did sell it. Ihadn't time to have another and check, so I'll be back for another try.

We have recently moved to Surrey and discovered this village and the Cyder House Inn had only just opened after a refurb. We loved the quirky decor and the feel of the place, a nice change from some of the truly ugly pubs around these days. We made an effort to speak with the staff and ask lots of questions and found everyone to be friendly and helpful. We had a bar snack and thought the food was good and had been prepared with thought, using local produce although I must say, the way the menu is written is a bit weird. A week or so later we went back for dinner and although the meal was ok it was nothing more than that, just ok but we felt the prices were London prices and the food just didn't quite match up. We went back for another shot last week but guess what? The place was shut with a little note on the door saying "closed for staff party"!!!!!!!!! I almost fell over!!!! Can you believe that and even telling paying customers they had closed the place for that purpose! Totally stupid idea guys. New pub, coming up to Christmas and you do that! Customers are your bread and butter but you turned them away that night to entertain staff. I ask myself, will they be open next December? The food isn't that great to be so arrogant - good luck, you're going to need it, in case nobody has told you - next year is going to be tough!
On me pogo steek fur the first team in edgies dressed in me green and white striped shirt and boxers, poot noddles under amm ferret and duck close behiend.Goot to pub after a 4 hour bounce, heed been told they sell the Newkie brown stuff and spam fritters which would goo well with me noddles. Nay span fritters avealible !! me duck and ferret not appy so lift steet awee called me maam to pick me up,had to goo back and git me noodles as i lift them on bar.
Have'nt been here for ages as it went down the pan. WHAT A CHANGE!!! looks great and the food is some of the best in the area. Not the best selection of ales but all was good. Will definatley become a regular again. What a lovely place in a beautiful setting - keep it up
found the cyder house in my travells and first impressions were great. beautifull building and surroundings but the interior left me cold, like its trying to be some sort of london wine bar in the middle of the counryside very weired.
The food was nothing to write home about & the christmass menu was a very expensive joke 30 per person and an extra 4 if you want a cheeseboard. glad to say though that the beer lines do get cleaned how do i know this you may say, quite simply really you could taste beerline cleaner in the beer just what you need after a hard days work.
Pubcrawler (of short distances)tell me do we have to book or is it as dead as a dodo, oooor packed with doodoo`s ??
popped in tonight for a beer, it was dead as a dodo - shame really as they could do better
I think as a Shackleford local I can safely say that this pub has vastly improved since it was taken over. The food and atmosphere is now much better than before, although the beer could be better. It's a shame though that personal vendettas can't be kept off the boards - and if the landlord is posting then I'm not surprised, the pub's current rating does not reflect the new Cyder House!
pub crawler is the landlord of the cyder house by the way. i worked with him before i went back to uni and he told the staff. the only reason he is putting comments on his own page is because he is a sad, pathetic man who doesn't know how to run his own buissness and gets everybody stressed.
i went into the pub and was trying to get a beer and one of the bar staff(a tall blonde man) just stood there talking whilst i was trying to get his attention. once i got his attention he seemed very rude. the landlord also seemed a little bit blashy with one of his staff and obviously was finding it very hard with the amount of people in there. all in all i think its got nice decor but a bit random but the owner doesn't really know how to run his buissness.
not as good as last owners. over cooked & over priced
Just because the Advertising campaign is not going well some folk are upset Arrrrrrr shame. Ps pubcrawler i notice you don`t Crawl that far ( a little bit of crawling going on here tho) Tally ho
What is going on? This place is great, they've made a real effort and the food is outstanding
what a shame this site is losing its credibility by allowing it to be hi-jacked by people who have obviously got a hidden agenda when it comes to the cyder house inn at shackleford.perhaps they would like to consider that not everyone wants a spit and sawdust local village pub.the village that i live in ,lost its pub a few years ago.in this case the landlord thought the locals owed him a living and lost sight of the basic economics of any business;supply and demand.i stand by my original review suffice to say i enjoyed my lunch at the cyder inn and will return sometime when i next visit this area.i am definately not connected to anyone at this place.i note my last comments have been deleted perhaps it was because of the use of the word -maturity.this is my last word on this matter and hope that all the cynical comments that have been posted as a result of my first review as seen in that light.

Spot on Stroller young feller
Well well as an outsider on this soap i would say Beersupper and Biker are on the money. This has been an average pub for years and not full-filled its potential and still hasn`t in my humble view,so when you see a glut of good comments coming from peeps only doing so for one pub alarm bells start ringing. Good name gaudyjohn (hope it does not suit you in real life)you coming back and starting the squabbling is a bit of pot an kettle, and rightly as Biker says and i ask why only comment on one pub and an average one at that?? And sorry did i miss something i thought this was a village pub not a gastro pub !Tally ho.
Neat outdoor seating, decent beer. Good for a stop off pub on a walk/bike ride. Personally i'd of thought this place would specialise in Cider or Cyder, given the name.. Can not comment on staff or food, not been in for couple of years.
i note beersupper has made a comment about the review that i am fully entitled to make and that i stand by.i travelled a fair distance to eat at the cyder inn and along with my wife and twentyone year old son thoroughly enjoyed the experience.incidentally my son who has recently graduated has worked at many gasto-pubs to supplement his student income, his current employer is one of the winners of the great british menu and recently cooked at the gerkhin as seen on the bbc.we are not linked to the management of the cyder house inn and are not involved in local politics so i resent that my review has been interpreted in this manner.we dine out regularly and i feel i have as much right as anyone to post my comments as we feel reasonably well informed about the merits of a good pub and certainly about the welcoming nature of any of the places that i visit.i look forward to returning to the cyder inn and recommend it to others
I take it August is the month the management/staff decided to have an advertising boost (all be it a cheap one) for this pub, click on to theyummymummy and above (Biker excluded)to see why regular people to this site will see through this sham. Tell me gaudyjohn where is the cyder inn anyway??? We have used this place on and off for 12 years it`s a Hall and Woodhouse tied pub,so if you like their beers you`ll be ok,it`s had lots of management changes in the time we`ve been using it, so lots of ups and downs, our last visit was the latter. If its changed again recently we wish the new guys all the best, but would suggest they get on and bring the standards up rather than get on here and talk about it.
a lovely country pub to suit all ages, just as they should be,with a welcoming atmosphere and an excellent lunchtime menu.will visit again one evening to dine and will enjoy the good food and service.impressive and unpretentious i would highly reccommend the cyder inn at shackleford.
I got a little lost the other day driving around and stumbled on a beautiful little country pub so decided to stop for a drink. The bulding is stunning from the outside and even better on the inside! The decor is very tasteful and original, modern and classic at the same time. The staff were VERY friendly, the food was amazing (didn't plan on eating but the menu was irresistable!) and so very well presented (I will recommend the burger!). I understand that the owners are new but I would never have guessed this as they were so professional. I'm so glad that my sat-nav wasn't working that day as I would never have found this little jewel in the countryside - I shall be telling everyone I know to go! P.S. My G+T was perfect!
had a great night - book in advance as it's so busy, i recomend the burger
I went into this pub with a couple of friends and our very young children. The staff were so helpful, full of life and very accomodating to our rather large and MAD brood. The menu was varied and interesting, not like some of the nearby fare. Saying that I had a Burger! It was outstanding, really took me by surprise. One of my friends had a healthy salad option, which ended up being an imaginative blend of seasonal veg and funky salad, a real treat! The entire menu is cut in half for kids, which we all found genius, rather than offering rubbish nuggets et al...all in all outstanding an highy recommended! Keep up the fab work. Will be having our next big night out here without a doubt.
At last the Cyder House is sorted. Great to see the place dragged into the 21st century with a great new team, great new food and a great atmosphere. Lets hope they keep up the good work.
Found this pub by accident and thought i would stop for a drink with my wife. Not exactly a country pub for a pub in the country! sounds silly, no? It Sounds and looks like they have only just opened but was not busy for a sunday afternoon. We sat outside on the terrace as it was a hot afternoon i had a pint of tanglefoot and my wife had a G+T, my pint was fine but not very cold for a bitter ( could of been the first pint out for the afternoon) . I hate it when pubs don't serve a G+T right, what i mean by right is by putting lots of ice in a long glass not 2 cubes in a whisky glass! While we sat outside we noticed the most annoying fan which hums for ages which spoils the peace and quiet of the country side.
Overall i think it's sweet but i think it belongs in the centre of london where it would fit in selling jigsaw shortbread and funny righting on all the mirrors and windows. A bit pretentious!
Definitely "on the up" - new landlords appear to be sorting the place out. Both beer and food excellent and they've got rid of the crap band which "played" on Tuesday nights, can only be a bonus.
As I said they look like they're doing a great job so far! I'm not sure when they moved in but as I was served food by them and went in there I feel fairly qualified to say the food and decor was good.
Went to this pub for the first time yesterday. The new landlords have just moved in and look like they're doing a great job so far. Fantastic decor, a good atmosphere and great food. Will definitely be back.
A real shame - present landlords are completely clueless. Took 10 minutes to get served but only 6 people in the pub, only one couple eating but heard the landlord apologise twice for the delay. I agree with the last comment - this could be (and was) such a good pub but these clowns will end up running it into the ground & another great old inn will go down the drain.
Just dont go there until they get their act together, really appears that they dont want to make any money or just dont care.
Food over priced, staff unfriendly, decor a complete mess. What a shame, location and building are good and with the right landlord, chef and staff could be a complete winner.
What is going on with this pub? Called in here last Friday as we heard that there has been another change of landlord. The decor is all over the place...old flowery pub carpet, completely contrasting bold black and white curtains, bare magnolia walls!! One part of the bar looks like a hotel reception!! Shame as a few years back you couldn't of wished for a nicer, more homely place to spend an evening. What a shame.
Mr_loydevans, honourably noted and accepted my good Sir.
Biker - 12 Oct 2007 14:34 |
Biker : Indeed, and much quoted by your good self.
Thank you MrLloydEvans
I think what you really mean is "buyer beware" if we translate from latin. However, the term was originally used on this site by a grand old protaganist who travels by the username of 5thearleofwimborne in the Kent and London area.
Biker:
"This coupled with eye watering prices "
Caveat Emptor old chap.
This place has been up and down over the years but much better now than previously. Used to visit regularly until recently, beers seem to be off a lot now (more cider!)and although food is good, the menu has limited choice and rarely seems to vary much. Landlord and staff friendly, great location and garden excellent. Unfortunately a few braying hoorays seem to have discovered it lately, must have strayed away from their natural habitat - the Barley Mow at Tilford.
Felt a bit cheated by the fact that they only had once cider - a fairly identikit commercial one at that (Stowford Press). Food was OK but a bit greasy. Nice guys behind the bar.
Visited recently for lunch, very over-stated and pretentious.
Food, seriously average but I suppose good by local standards if you have read previous 'anonymous' reviews. This coupled with eye watering prices is a fairly accurate description of this place. No, I don't expect this review to last long on this site !!
Visitors, best value for money in this area is the Good Intent or Jolly Farmer at Puttenham. 4/10 and that's generous. Previous 'anonymous' postings are probably written by staff or crony customers as it's plain daft to write good reviews without identity.
Sorry i dont trust anonymous comments think they have more to hide than there names!!!!!Not the best on this side of Guildford, beer is limited food average and not to friendly staff.
Lush...the whole meal experience. very impressed

Had a lovely meal, staff friendly, nice patio with childrens play area for our children. We will definatley be back.
anonymous - 4 May 2007 19:44 |
A while since last visit but good place to stop off in the country. Did do some good beers here before and decent outside sitting area. But better in the spring or summer
I try to visit The Cyder House as often as possible. Always a very welcoming place and the food and drink is always of a high standard to match.
Stopped in recently and we were treated in a very disintrested manor by an 'mature' lady (landlady?).
Not what we'd been led to expect, left after a drink and ate elsewhere.
After developing a rather jaundiced view of Surrey country pubs, this was a very refreshing change. More modern inside tham one might expect, but a nice atmosphere. Staff seemed interested, and the customers looked like they were enjoying the food and drink. Wished that I could have stayed longer...
nice village pub, beer i had was very drinkable
Went for Sunday lunch and cannot fault the food here - it was delicious. But there were four of us and only one dish of vegetables between us - we had to pay 2.50 extra for more.
It is a clean well maintained pub with good service but if you are looking for that traditional cosy pub feel it won't be here. The Badger beer is nice but there are only a couple of lagers if that's what you prefer.

Friday night - 20th May 2005
Immaculate & impressive car park on arrival and lovely looking pub exterior. However, on entry to the pub it was something like an unfinished modern hotel bar!
Service and staff were good as was the meal but expensive for a supposed pub. Spotlessly clean inside but lacks soul and atmosphere. Reasonable beers though but only a few available on our visit.
Such a pity as the location is superb - sorry, won't visit again.
A proper country pub with good food and beer. Don't go there though if you're looking for a lively atmosphere being a rural area.
I visited the pub after a write up in the Guildford Times last week and really liked the decor. Very simple and clean. But the food was magnificent. 10/10

Just been redecorated - not sure about it yet - will have to re-visit and make my mind up...

Visited this one recently and was quite impressed. Good prompt service - will definetly return!

Absolutely superb food, well priced and good portions. Last time I was there they had keg Bulmers Medium on (the only pub locally that has since the demise of the Ram in Godalming).
Nice pub for a spot of Sunday lunch, though you may want to check availability fo tables beforehand.

Nice country pub, bit of a mad quiz night on a Tuesday... and curry night on Wednesday.
