Still selling Purity UBU which was at least an improvement on the offerings I had tasted earlier in Birmingham last Thursday. Big and bright, it's like a slightly upmarket Wetherspoons with little to commend it.
Efficient and friendly service. Well-prepared food and a choice if four cask ales. A little pricey. 7/10.

Quite busy although there are other pubs very close to, comfortable and with good Enville Ale on. Cheerful menu of favorites - burgers and sandwiches Feature largely. Subdued music and a TV showing the news. Nice bar staff. Unfairly overlooked.

A buzzing sort of pub, a sort of trendy young rich persons Wetherspoon's. My pint of Ubu Purity (?) was 3.60 which was on the high side for Brimingham, but nice enough. When I finally got it that is. The first bar girl started taking my order, which included food, but was distracted by someone else's problem & forgot me. After a couple of minutes resembling a shag on a rock I got somebody else's attention & was finally served.

Now called the Sun? Four cask ales, unusual for what seems to be a music based venue. The Purity Mad Goose was excellent. Food also seems good, freshly made and reasonably priced.
Not quite as good as some of the other nearby pubs but a vast improvement on its old guise.
This could be a very good venue. Perhaps having bands on that would pull in 300+ punters. Ideally located just off New Street, big square shaped room with a balcony. Small stage at one end, with big screen that comes down for football. The downside, I've been in there, more than once, on a Saturday night, when they've only had one draught beer available (I don't mean just 1 real ale, I mean just one type of any beer/lager), as they had either run out or more probably trying to clear out aging stock. "Pint of Pedigree please", "sorry only got Carling, will that do instead"
Looks like this pub has gone for the `in crowd` image. Big open room with a balcony, bit bright, bit lounge, bit trendy studenty. Lots of beers and wines, don`t know if any taste any good - stuck to a coke as the mod and ska music put me off my beerhead. Just not my cup of tea (or beer) really.

Recently changed to The Sun On The Hill, but same ol' problems when it comes to the drinks.
Went here on a Friday night, and had a pint of Bombardier (the only ale on), which was average, but I couldn't have any more, as they ran out. I think they may have had a wheat beer on draught, but I didn't sample it.
Aside from the drinks, it's bright and there's always loud music blaring from its doors towards chucking out time, but in a good Beatles kind of way, rather than dancey. DJs on when I went in, and even got one of them to play Creedence Clearwater Revival, which seemed to go down well (with me anyway).
Nothing special mind, and not really worth seeking out.

Now reopened, its clean and and has had a refurb, the food looked and smelled great and the staff were very friendly. the beer was fine but not exciting. great plae to have a bite to eat or watch the sport. then go to the Welly after !

The picture above with the "pub to let" sign says it all. This place has closed once again, its changed hands a few times now. I've never been in simply because the frontage always looks nasty, no other word for it. I would glance through the window when I passed and it would always be dark and dank with pretty much all the light coming from the huge projector screen on the back wall showing Sky Sports News or some sporting event. If I took this place over I would like to make it into a pub to take on The Wellington, a nice cosy pub with a focus on ale. I love The Wellington dont get me wrong but they've had it too easy for too long, I think the next person to take this place over should try and give The Wellington a run for its money and give Birmingham another fine ale pub.

Took 15 minutes to get served (only waited as was due to meet someone here) by languid barman who was the only 1 working. Tables dirty, pub grotty, didn't risk the real ale, glad to leave
No cask available on Tuesday. It was rammed as the Chelsea vs Barcelona game was on. The toilets were disgusting. Go to the Briar Rose or the Wellington not here.
Correction - I think it was Abbot not IPA.
Recently reopened after a refurb (apparently) and prob under new management. One ale on, GK IPA, which was surprisingly OK. Ale + lager topped 5, so there's plenty of cheaper places around. Pub was lifeless - far too big for the number of people in (Thurs night). Occassional live/dj nights. Sky News on numerous TVs, big screen for weekend sports. 5/10.
Considering how good some of the neighbouring pubs are, it's amazing anyone comes in here. Poor beer and dodgy atmosphere.
Truly awful. Appalling staff and no beer. A grotty little hole.
Dark, dingy and dirty (on our visit at least). One drink and out - the Briar Rose or Welly are better options.
Just one word for this place..NO!
I went in here last Saturday (19/1/08). I never come in here, but we popped in to watch a bit of football on th saturday evening.
The place itself isn't bad - but it could be much better. I've had poor beer here in the past, so i stuck to bottled Corona.
I've had food here in the past, but it wasn't special, although that was about 2 years ago. One thing that hasn't changed is the poor service - whenever you go to the bar in a lull, the barstaff seem to disappear around the back - I waited a good 3 mins to see anyone. I won't be back here often.
Skip this one and go to the spoons instead. Visited by the kind of people who enjoy drinking in the wellington. As i say, best avoided!
Paid this pub a visit yesterday lucnh time.. expensive beer tho for sumwhere so quiet and during the week.. food was okay and 2 for 7.50 on the rump steak made this place worth the visit.. when in town reccomended for food, but beer at the Briar Rose and the Wellington(o yeah) so much better value for money Seaman Max

I went in for a drink and some food and it took 20 minutes to be served despite being fairly empty. The lights kept on being put on full beam above us and then flickering out. The bar staff were ill-tempered and more intent on watching the TV than serving or looking at their customers waiting to be served. The food was cheap but rank and the cistern in the men's urinals was diconnected from the urinals and so the toilets stank of urine...
Not to be recommended

Not a very good pub at all. Went in on a quiet Tuesday night to watch a football match only to be told by the staff that they don't show matches which aren't written in chalk on the board!!! That gripe aside the bar staff were particularly useless and really didn't seem to be interested in serving us - this besides the fact we were the only people standing at the bar. On the plus side the beer tasted ok but unfortunately too many negatives to really recommend this pub to anyone who like to be served efficiently by people who have half a brain.
i sometimes go in here and it's a lovely big airy pub, friendly indie type crowd on a week night. good value beer and friendly staff. open mic on a thursday night is well recommended. some good talent playing!
Nice airy pub with plenty of dark wood seating and mood-enhancing dim lighting. Prices for drinks are good and if you add that to a fairly impressive range of beers that are in top nick it represents a very good place to spend your hard-earned beer money. Bar staff are helpful and quick. Food comes from a limited menu but is very reasonably priced and tasty with generous portions. The huge screen is good for watching Sport, and it was a nice and cool place to seek a brief respite from the tropical temperatures outside when I visited. A good solid pub for either a quiet lunchtime pint or a proper session. Infintely preferable to the over-priced, slightly too smug wine bar up the road with it's pitiful food menu at much higher prices. Do yourself a favour and "keep it real"(as I understand the youth of today say) by going to this proper pub and doing your tastebuds and bank balance a favour.
OK bar but lacking identity. Bored bar staff.
The Hill (it's had a name change to go with the new image) isn't bad at all. One of the new Firkins, it tries to be a pub-club hybrid and sort of succeeds. The music is loud, but you can still hold a conversation reasonably easily. The cask ale has not been good as of yet, but they seem to be trying so I'll see what it's like in a few months. I tend to stick to the bottled Belgian beers, of which they have a good selection for a trendy pub, including my favourite, Delerium! Long live pink elephants!
