Suprising events as Punch Pubs only sold the pub a few months ago.....
|
A holding company has taken a T.A.W and is opening it on 21st Jan until a buyer is found, probably to knock it down
|
Rumour has it that the tenants were forced out by sky-high rents and the pubco which owns it plan to sell it off as part of a development into flats which also encompasses the property next door. Obviously these rumours can't be true or the local CAMRA would be making an awful lot of noise about losing one of their flagship real ale pubs in such a tawdry way, and there's been nothing but silence from CAMRA.

Suprised to see this pub is closed and freehold up for sale again...

Good to know that the review I posted in April was wide of the mark and that the Beerhouse is going from strength to strength with a new taproom to be added etc. Have to say things looked a bit quiet when I passed today.

Myself and a chum were recently in Ipswich for the Beer Festival, and had a bit of time to 'kill' as we couldn't get in til 5pm. We went to The Beer House on spec, as it's not in the current Camra guide. Couldn't have been more impressed; 4 interesting real beers available (including a 9.7%er!), all of which the landlord gave us tasters of, without us having to ask - we obviously looked like Beer Hunters. Both the landlord and one of his regulars at the bar were very friendly and informative about the pub, and the beer scene in Ipswich, which seems to be on the up and up, having just been in the Fat Cat and the Dove Street Inn, both of which were fine too. There's also live music every night of varying varieties; Mrs Landlord was setting up the PA as we were leaving. Top pub, top beer, top people.

It is good to see this pub being well run again. The previous people almost destroyed it! It has had a makeover and is clean and smart and the new landord is trying hard. There are normally 4 ales on handpump and I have not had anything other than a great pint. A tap room is planned. This is one of the best music pubs in town and deserves support - use it or use it.

I was here on Sunday to watch a friend play in his band, it was very different looking from our last visit. the current owners have gone for the music and ale side of things in a major way, I sampled woodforde wherry, brakspear bitter, everards tiger beer and hobgoblin all perfectly conditioned. My only complaint was no food but the young lady serving informed me it was planned for the summer as soon as the kitchen was finished. All in all a pleasant evening had by all a very well done on revitalising this pub that I believed to be dead and gone.

Very clean and good beer with some really different decoration points, really enjoyed the bass and black sheep. Will return shortly as Egypt whom I have not seen in years are on soon and the landlord is very friendly and cheerful. Which is a rare thing in Ipswich.
|
Sat in here enjoying a woodford wherry fantastic pint had a black sheep of equal quality. Had some great music pictures and a nice but ever so big guy behind the bar. Felt like I've drinking here for years, I live in Ipswich but have never drank this end of street the dove my normal haunt. Very good shall return to take in a band and few more pints.

We ended our campaign meeting here for the evening. of all the inns visited this provided the most genuine welcome and found the ale in fine fettle. understand live music to beer the driving force here, might give the music a miss but was pleased to see a modern looking bar have so much character. well done

Very good service and ale in fine condition. Brakespear at 2 a pint this and the general look of the place give me hope that the ale and traditions of this tavern are swiftly returning. most pleasing

I thought it was Hendrix?

Good to see that the Milestone is is still in business for the time being, but it has to be said that from the point of view of someone who likes real pubs and real ales the glory days are long gone. The signage on the front of the pub has been covered over with a home-made banner re-naming the pub the Beerhouse 'live music venue', for some reason accompanied by what appears to be an image of Che Guevara. The interior has been redecorated accordingly, dark walls and minimal seating. No food on offer. 4 real ales, the one I had was in good condition, but these clearly aren't what makes this place tick. I inagine it's at its best around midnight on a Friday or Saturday with live music on the go.

went in last weekend for a quick drink before the theatre started and i must say i enjoyed it that much i missed the first half of the show because i was 10 mins late . Anyway the beer was excellent . I'm normally a lager man but after talking to the landlord i've just been converted to ale they 've got 4 ale's on and although enjoyed all of them i think black sheeps is for me. the band they had on was better than what i paid to watch . but i'll only rate it a 9 out 10 because i missed the first half of the show not your fault i know but i have to blame someone .

Visited the pub for the first time over the Easter weekend. The beers were in excellent condition. Particularly enjoyed the Black Sheep Bitter and the Woodforde's Wherry. Clearly a landlord who can look after his cask ales. I will call in again next time I am in Ipswich.
|
now re-opened as the beer house refurbished and from my point of view a given new lease of life. 4 ale on I drank tribute and hobgoblin both superb (wherry and black sheep on offer also)rock band on and was very impressed with musical style decoration! will return a giant thumbs up

Freehold for sale by owners Punch....

Sorry to read the of the possible demise of this pub. I make regular use of it as it is convenient for a drink before and after shows at the Regent. I have always found service friendly and efficient, last Sunday was no exception. They had Tribute on and it was very good indeed.

It is regret that I have to inform you that the Milestone is lossing the landlord and landlady of the milestone because of a greedy Pubco (Punch Taverns) who have increased the rent and beer prices which has made it unsustainable in the current climate. Punch messed up by not allowing the landlord to have free reign on the real ales and tried it get them to turn in into a food establishment. We have lost a great live music venue and traditional pub. They will be leaving the Milestone on New Years Eve. Sorry to see both Phil and Michelle go!

On a tight lunch time today on passing I saw it must be open. Upon entering I saw several casks and two beers available. I however waited for a minute or so and I was not even clocked by the barman who was busy chatting to his two friends. I do not know many pubs today who let people go once they have entered without serving them. Obviously not the landlord but just a paid barman who would rather chat to his friends than serve paying customers. This saddens me as I remember also how good this pub was in the past with great beer and excellent live music.

Took my 7 year old daughter here after a swim at Crown Pools, knowing it would be less crowded and less corporate than the Cricketer's. We ordered food and drink and the barman then informed me we'd be amongst the last people to eat here as food is finishing at the weekend and the pub itself is soon to be demolished. Of all the pub closures sweeping across Ipswich (and presumably everywhere else) this for me is the saddest. Just a few years ago we used to live up the hill and were regulars in this pub which was then thriving and popular. We'd come for the Sunday roast and the Monday steak nights, always accompanied by excellent beers from the tap room.Live music was always the biggest draw, this didn't attract us, but I remember the crowds spilling out onto the pavements on music nights. I remember going in on Xmas day when the aforementioned 7 year old was a toddler and receiving a free pint from the landlord and landlady of the time, Ady and Karen. Of course they moved on to the Dove- a pub which at the time was about to close because it couldn't attract any customers. Now the Dove is thriving and serving the great beers which seem such a mystery to other pub landlords, and it's the turn of the Milestone to give up the ghost. I suppose it would be churlish at this time to wonder why the first thing they did was close down the taproom and get rid of most of the real ales, or indeed why good old Punch Taverns didn't question a strategy which was bound to drive away most of their customers. Anyway, not much point reviewing the food as you will never eat it- there were 2 real ales, deuchars IPA and Adnams bitter served from the cask which was OK. The pubs around this area are dropping like dominoes.
|
Twas a very fine pub for a few years, now reduced to mediocrity at best!
When Ady and Karen left to concentrate on The Dove, they effectively consigned the Milestone to a ignoble future.
Within days the new owners had closed the taproom, removed several handpumps, stripped the pub of it's quirky decor, and removed all traces of interesting beer. Sometimes they don't even have any real ale at all these days.
The entertainment isn't what it used to be either, and the Suffolk Songwriters open mic night moved on in early 2007.
|
This pub has changed hands. Ady and Karen have now moved to The Dove Street Inn. The range of beer at the Milestone is now limited - just 3 or 4 mainstream beers and the prices are higher. They still have regular music. They need support or Ipswich could lose a good music venue.

Fantastic selction of real ales and the band were tremendous
|
Really good, wide range of guest beers, both from pump and cask in the cellar.
