Stopped here during an evening bike ride. A nice old pub in wooded setting. A range of beers and cider in good condition. Just a handful of regulars in - looked like estate workers - who seemed to be deliberately awkward and blocking access to the bar in an otherwise empty pub. Not a particularly welcoming atmosphere and in no rush to return.

Compared with the nearby Old Chequers this has a better choice of real ale but it doesn't seem to be as welcoming as the Chequers. I will try to go again and get to know it better but at the moment there's not enough of a pull to get there as there are plenty of same level or better pubs nearer to where I live.

Current rating - 9/10?
A small country drinking pub. The bars get a little crowded, but there is no problem in getting served.
There seems to be a prevailing smell of air fresheners from the lavvies, which is slightly off putting.
The food is ok, served on relatively small plates which are topped-up with chips.
As to the beer, Abbot and GK IPA with four guest ales and a cider, Hedge Layer on my visit. I had a couple of pints of Adnams Broadside. It was good, but I have had better.
My rating - 6/10

An excellent traditional country pub with an excellent selection of well kept guest ales. The publican and locals are all very friendly and welcoming. Never overly busy but does a very good trade on weekends. Food is very decent typical pub fare, reasonably priced, and the specials are sometimes better than decent. Lovely country setting with idyllic cricket field just over the road makes for a very pleasant summer afternoon sitting out the front watching the cricket. A good number of tables at the front of the pub and a large garden to the rear, parking is also ample. If you are after a nice drinking pub in a lovely setting with decent, reasonably priced food it's hard to go past the Crown & Sceptre.

I discovered this pub just over a year ago. It does what it says on the box. It is a traditional country pub with a warm welcome. The default beers are Greene King IPA and Abbot ale. A number of guest beers, which have been different each time I visited but always in peak condition, supplement these. The lady tells me the wine selection is extremely good as well (do they do a real ale BTEC?). We have eaten there a couple of times (evening meal and a Sunday roast) and each time the food was excellent and not overpriced considering the quality. Highly recommended!
