Great pub. Sadly, it is currently shut until further notice. Allegedly due to the unreasonable stance of the pub company which owns it. Let's hope this is not yet another case of a lovely traditional pub being lost to its community because of the machinations of big business. Shameful!

Great pub!

The couple that own the pub are really friendly and welcoming. A good selection of lagers and a handful of ales.

Pool table in good condition, and a fantastic smoking area outside with loads of space. Even a large beer garden for the summer.

Is very popular considering the high number of pubs in the area.

Highly recommended, my first choice for drinking on a weekend in the area.

I visited the York the other day and was extremely surprised to see it is back to its old self again. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere great and beer good. I did not intend to eat when I went in but was tempted by what I saw emerging from the kitchen and was not disappointed. A plateful of fresh local ingredients hit the spot. You must all go and try for yourselves.

The York Tavern is getting back to its old self again!! New management has made a big difference and this pub has started to get back on the circuit again! Went last night and the acoustic night upstairs was excellent with local artists performing.

Only went back in as there was an excellent write up in the Evening News Pub Watch the other week...

My first visit in a while - not because it had a bad reputation, but there are simply so many options in the area. It was 4:30 on a Wednesday afternoon, so was understandably fairly quiet. Played some pool and enjoyed the Wherry.

Don't know if it was Jo behind the bar, but she was very friendly and welcoming.

Interesting to read the comments below. The York certainly has been on a downward trend recently however within the last two weeks has been taken over by the guy who ran it 10 years ago! Drastic changes have already been made and now features live music on Monday evening with an open mic and I also hear they've taken on a brand new chef who'll be serving food from next Sunday (3rd Sept 2006). Well worth giving the pub another try if you were disappointed last time around and I look forward to seeing Andy and Jo pull the pub back to how it used to be!

Clueless management, 10 years ago great. Now, just pitiful. They deserve to go under and they probably will - take a walk down to the Eaton Cottage and see how it should be done..........

I wouldn't say Im a regular but I visit at least a few times a month. Usually a good place to have a quiet drink at any time if the day.
I would warn people that there is a bit of an unwelcoming atmosphere recently maybe due to a change in management in the past few months?, i'm not sure. But be warned if you put a few quid in the juke box, after waiting an hour for your tracks to play the bar staff/manger will simply skip past them! At 1 a track is quite a lot. In the end the Bar staff tried to refund the money owed straight from her own pocket and not through the till! I dont feel thats right so I refused the refund and wont be visiting the York in the near future

A slightly odd pub, tries to be a proper corner local but doesn't quite feel right. Can't say I care for what the new owners have done with the menu either.

A great place for a Sunday afternoon, not large, but a proper pub.
