I drove past the pub this morning, and it has been boarded up, so it is definitely closed now. It's a shame as I enjoyed a few of the beer festivals here.

Pub may be closed now, as the tel. no. displayed above doesn't take incoming calls.

Visited this pub on Sunday 25 Oct 05 attracted by the sign outside advertising real ales. However, felt extremely unhappy when charged 3 for two halves. When I quereied this with the lady behind the bar she told me it was 2.40 for a pint but he (the landlord I assume) had a strange policy with halves! I'd call it more than strange. I understand that this pub is being closed shortly, I wonder if the local CAMRA group is aware of this pricing policy. To me it seems grossly unfair to penalise people because they want to drink a half, after all it amounts to a 25% premium on the price of a pint.

The pub has changed, sadly for the worse, since all the good experiences people had over the last year. If I knew about this site then I would have been recommending the pub aswell.
I visited with two mates yesterday and found the attitude of the female behind the bar less than friendly toward my friend who was buying the round in. There were 20 "jugs" (handled glasses) at the bar but she flatly refused to let us have our beer in them saying they were "for the regulars only". I asked where their names were on the glasses as they all looked the same to me, but nothing was said. In the end my friend felt so embarrassed he got us halves instead so we could head to another pub quickly.
Closure is due on November 5th and, given our experience here compared to Waltham Abbey's remaining ale pubs, I can't bring myself to feel as sad as I once would.

Reading the previous comments I think I must have gone into a different pub. The bar is intolerably smoking and for the first time in my life I left a pint as it was so bad.

A surperb traditional pub with a great atmosphere. A free house which serves an excellant choice of beers. The only one of it's kind in Waltham Abbey. Very upset that there are plans to knock the pub down & we are doing all we can to fight this.

As landlord of the Old English Gentleman Walthan Abbey. I try to run the pub in a traditional manner ie Quailty Product good service in a traditional way. That mean Beer first supported by food served up to closing ie a full menu as a take a way children are tolerated not encouraged. I am a small pub on the river and revile in the history of the area. We have just finished our third beer festival selling over 30 cask ales in three days with no troulbe. The Land Lords of the OEG wish to pull it down after 190 year and put flats on the site. The OEG is the last pub of 15 sites between Walthan Cross & Waltham Abbey.

RE: The Old English Gentleman at Waltham Abbey. Sorry, live in the USA and have not been to the pub for many years, But I hear it is going to be knocked down and a "family pub" built in it's place. This so incensed me that I joined Camra. I encourage tour readers to do the same and fight for the retention of this pub.

Tiny pub with constant traffic outside but good beers. Limited, as can only hold a few people, but the beer garden is merely strewn weather-beaten benches next to the car park by the barren canal. A no-swearing policy is also enforced, so don't get excitable!

A superb session last night (16/9/03). The Fullers Pride was supplemented by two Nethergate beers, and the food and friendly service continue to be superb. The landlord celebrates his first anniversary in the pub on 19/09/2003. Long may it continue.

A traditional friendly country pub, once tied to McMullens brewery, now reopened, unchanged and virtually unspoilt, as a freehouse. Three beers on handpump; last night (27/08/2003) saw Everards Tiger, Tetley Imperial and Fullers London Pride. I tried the Imperial which was very good. The food is excellent and very reasonably priced. Both myself and a friend I took up there were pleasantly surprised. A traditional two-bar pub, with a dart board in the public bar. 60s to 90s recorded music. The beer garden adjoins the car park and backs onto the river Lee offering some beautiful views. Lee Valley Park is in easy reach. This pub is a refreshing reminder of how pubs used to be, and a visit is recommended.
