Permanently closed on the basis of a unanimous panel verdict.
Cited Infractions:
Repeated delivery of Russians chemically comparable to 16 molar sulphuric acid. Inadequate tooling of the bell. Non-availability of Reward (Tear Drop Explodes), on the dukey. Use of Ann O's undercrackers as curtains (thus rendering the pool table unusable - pitch dark conditions).

I drank so much here in 2000-2003 that I can't walk past this place without feeling disorientated unless I have sunk half a dozen pints of smirnoff ice and a few black russians before midday. This part of Fetter lane just doesn't make sense to me except through bleary eyes. I miss the wonky pool table, and the smell of toasting pizza drifting down from the restaurant upstairs competing with the aroma of stale minstrels from the machine in the corner. On a quiet day, I can still here the shrill of the bell followed by the dulcet tones of the giant landlady shouting "ring that bell again and you're barred" in the wind. Rat and Swan have moved to pastures new (Rat to The Crown and Swan to Artillery Arms) but if this place was open still, sure as eggs is eggs, their names would be occupying 90% of the names scrolling up the golden tee best scores machine. A legend has gone. I'll still rate it highly, even though it is closed for those memories.

Walked past this pub at lunchtime and it was closed/boarded up. This is the second time this has happened in last 12 - 18 months. Will this be the end?
Took a chance after visiting the hole around the corner, and I thank the Lord I found it. I liked this place, reasonable ale, good staff and whilst it is a bit suited I had an enjoyable visit. Luckily it wasnt Karaoke night I guess!
Well done you guys!
Does anyone know if the karaoke is run by the same guy that used to do before the Punch Tavern guys took over?
Found this place cos the guys at Punch Tavern are running it! I liked the place, did not eat there but sure the food would be the same as the Punch... but found it moore of a boozer, had some beers and some cheap shots and the place was pumping... but the bloke doing Karaoke was ... well no pop idol. his lungs did not ruin the evening too much

Well White Rabbit, it sorry to hear your comment about the Printer Devil as I was there last Friday when you walked in at 9:30pm. I not sure what you saw but I and the work friends I was out with, had a great night and meet people like Foxibelle. I been to many other pub in London and back in Australia and I can tell you, pub like the Printer Devil don't come along much. It a great little pub, I like to called my local after work. Every time I go there everyone seen to be enjoy themselves and the staff are always friendly. As for the hangover, I not sure about you but I was able to get in the morning and spend a few hours back at work before heading off to meet friends.
What a shame white rabbit does not seem to have a personality. I am a regular of the Printers, and have to say I find the bar staff/wine/food/general ambience truly welcoming - just what you ask for in a London pub. I was also there on the friday night you mention, although I did not partake in the karaoke I was certainly partaking in a bit of a boogy and chatting with many of the other people who were there. There may have been city boys and girls, but frankly, we are in the city - what do you expect? This does not mean that any people there were aggressive or pretentious - there was certainly no "inevitable trouble" as you call it - and has never been in the many many times I have frequented this establishment!I suggest if you want a quieter friday evening, with people as miserable as you are - to stay well away and have a drink with your fun friends somewhere else.

what a difference an hour makes. this was a reasonable pub at around 8 in the evening. nothing special but ok beer and attentive staff. returned at 9.30 and it was awash with city boys and girls pie-eyed on shooters and screeching the words of 'let me entertain u' into the karaoke mic. whilst doing their best just to stop from falling over unconscious. the bar staff didn't help by encouraging the next round of tequilas to the hapless, fleeced fools knocking them back. we left before what looked like the inevetible trouble flared up. avoid this pub like the plague, i only hope all the punters wake up with the hangovers they deserve
This is my work local and it's a much appreciated sanctuary from other pubs / bars in the area on a Friday night: it's reassuringly busy enough but we always manage to get a table, hear each other speak and wind down rather than up. The staff are very jolly too.
Well, it's going to be replaced with offices I'm afraid. It'll never be a pub again.
I'm told that it came down to the fact that it's worth 900,000 as a pub and over 2 million as offices. An easy decision to make unfortunately.
Noticed this was closing at lunchtime today so thought I'd give it a quick review - in a word, mediocre. Anyone know what'll be replacing it?
The pub is closing for good on Friday August 19th. So the last night there is the Thursday. Paul, the latest landlord is moving on to pastures new with a new gastropub venture in Hammersmith. He'll be missed. The pub will not.
Still a tip. Keeping it real...
Guess what? There's a new landlord. Paul's a good bloke though. He's lasted two weeks so far and he's genuinely concerned with turning the pub around. The food has been extremely cheap recently since Sid made all meals three quid. Paul's already ordered up a better quality of food for the evenings at least, so we'll see what happens there.
And he's got two lovely dogs who make closing time a much more pleasant experience. Fingers crossed Paul.
Surely this has to be Greene King's most cursed pub. A poisoned chalice for any landlord...
The karioke (sp?) on Friday evenings is hugely popular, and good for the best laugh of the week!

Continuing its run of landlords, there is now another one. Sid has departed after a few short weeks and there's now a Hong Kong girl in charge. She says she's only there temporarily, but most of the permanent landlords last less time than that.
This pub is in huge trouble. If you visit any other pub in the area (The Olde Mitre, Melton Mowbray) you'll get a good pint from friendly, intelligent, well-trained staff in good surroundings. And in the Printers Devil you get none of that.
A clean and characterless hotel lobby. The upstairs is no better, but feels more like a department store caf. The only interesting room is the one on the left and that is dominated by a pool table. Serves a lacklustre Greene King IPA.
Unbelieveably, they've got yet another landlord. However, this is a decent fellow who's doing his best. Food is now 3 quid and you pretty much get what you pay for. (Fish and chips is good though). Beer is much better kept and poured. Going up in my estimations. Previously I wouldn't have come here except for the club meetings, but now, I might even consider it for a night out.
But when you've got The Olde Mitre just around the corner, then this place has a long way to go.
Yet another new landlord as of June 2005. Hopefully this will mark an improvement, as things had been starting to go downhill. Got three bad pints in a row one night. Yikes.
On Wednesday nights from 7pm, the Dragons On The Hill role-playing club (dungeons and dragons, that sort of crap) meets upstairs.
The pub's okay and the food menu has improved hugely. Has a barmaid called Ninja. Honest!
Pleasant atmosphere and ultra friendly bar staff. The camp south african is particularly helpful. The karaoke night is highly recommended if you want to embarrass yourself in front of your work colleagues.

Forgot to mention that if you order chips as part of your meal to ask for no salt on them. This is definitely a way of getting you to drink more
Fullers aand IPa bitters and yes kareoke and pool table if your so inclined. Upstairs is quieter (more emphasis on food)
New Landlady as from September 04. Things change..for the better:) Staropramen still the best beer but you don't go to a pub just for the beer. Food is really good, as is the Kareoke which, when I've been, has been popular.

Definitely *not* my kind of pub. I suppose it might be OK if you like nitrokeg or lager. I made my excuses and decamped to the Melton Mowbray, just round the corner and a far better pub.
Phil - 15 May 2004 10:32 |
This was a god boozer used by all the Actuarial trainees fro Prudential. Lager is definitely better than the bitter.

Did this pub used to be called the Black Horse in years gone by?

Great in the Summer as it's air conditioned, has two bars (one up and one down + Pool Table room), there's supposed to be Kareoke on Friday nights but I didn't see any evidence if this (only been in there twice mind). Had Boddington's first time I went there and it was OK but the second time I went I had Staropramen and 'Yes!' it was served in V tall glasses and tasted great. Cheers!!!
