Looking at the last review, which was made over a year ago, I feel compelled to write something a bit more positive. A bunch of us recently went to The Telegraph for a Sunday roast and had a fine old time. The staff, of whom there were more than enough for swift, attentive service, were cheerful and efficient, the beer was varied and well-kept and the Roast was absolutely cracking and, though not cheap at about £12, was really good value considering both the quality and quantity. We will definitely be back for more soon. They were very welcoming to the two muddy dogs we brought with us and a water bowl appeared without asking.
This seems like a great locals' pub which is still very hospitable to all comers. There seems to be something happening there pretty much every day - quiz, open-mike, etc so definitely worth popping in if you're in the area.

Shocking service when I was last in this place (December 2012). I was served by a ghost-like bar maid who refused to speak to customers, her face frozen with an expression of despondency and indifference to the customer. Barely five words are exchanged between ordering your beer and burger and having said burger placed in front of you with a hint of derision. The service was bad enough that I won't be going back. It's happened to me a few times with this bar maid. Funny thing is, as soon as she'd finished her shift she was drinking wine and laughing along with her friends like a normal person, so we know she's capable of acting without complete indifference to those around her. The level of rudeness is significant enough to genuinely astound you. However good the beers are in this place, there's no point going to a place you're not welcome.

Enjoyed a really lovely Sunday lunch at The Telegraph today. Generous portions and good flavours. The vegetables were fresh tasting and not overcooked. Lovely dessert and a relaxing atmosphere. We will certainly go back for Sunday lunch as this is not the first time we have been more than pleased with our food.

Went to this pub on Sunday as my girlfriend wanted a roast; I had the burger. Roast was Ok - a bit pricy at �11. My main problem was with the burger. It was served with oven chips and the burger itself was obviously from a packet as well. I would expect this from an O'neals or Weatherspoons as you would only pay �4 or �5. A review below this called this nearly a gastro pub... hardly! The place itself is nice and it had a good selection of beer. I was just very disapointed with my meal which I hope the owners look into as �8.50 for oven chips and a packet burger is a bit poor... I was asked 'how is the food' and I said fine... Why don't us brits say it as it is a bit more at the time...

A great boozer. Refurbed a couple of years back and run by a lovely chap who knows his beer and really can cook. His wife runs front of house; whenever I've been in the staff have been excellent. Good jukebox, decent interior including coal fires when it's cold, large room upstairs which you can hire for this and that, games, newspapers - and it's rarely overcrowded.
Dennett's Road is slightly out of the way so there isn't a huge amount of passing traffic - but now that the Montague's closed (I hear) The Telegraph is without rival and by a country mile the best drinker in New Cross Gate.
A solid range of ales on tap - Fullers representing London including Gale's HSB on occasion - now that's a tremendous pint - a couple of well-kept guest ales, a specialist German brewer for wheat beer/stronger lager (for some reason I'm slightly blurry on the names zigactly) and a fairly priced wine offer. Last time I was in Fuller's Bengal Lancer was on - an excellent pale ale - and I noticed some Belgian oddities in the fridge also.
I've eaten here on numerous occasions and never been disappointed. The menu is brisk so it's all completely fresh and cooked to order. 'Very tasty,' was how my mate the sous-chef at one of the starred London places put it. Service is quick we've always found and there are some more exotic dishes on the menu as well as fish and chips/ a roast etc. Sunday lunch is excellent, by the way, and not over-priced.
One last attraction is that there are some interesting nooks - almost...inglenooks...perhaps - in which one can sit. Good to come and bunker down with a book. Yes, there are stuffed animals above...one needn't look. I am hopeful that the stuffed zebra from the Monty might make it over, but meanwhile the large Peters Projection worldmap in the back means that your escape from The Great Wen can be plotted quite comfortably.
Might nip in for a pint tomorrow actually...

I can't think of a better pub nearby, although admittedly slim pickings. Excellent pint of Seafarers on Sunday, and a relaxed vibe going on from a mixed-age group of drinkers. Busy schedule of events each evening, presumably in an attempt to liven it up as it is quietish (which is fine by me...). A very good little pub, and will be returning - we need to keep this one open!

This pub has almost everything for me - a good selection of beers (including ales), a god juke box (a rare find these days), old school decor (with some nice touches on the walls, such as old election posters and a world map), and great food. The menu is interesting - not standard pub fare. It's more than I'd expect from a pub - it's almost a gastro pub (and probably is by contemporary definition). There's also a covered outside area out the front where you can smoke. The only place to rival this place is the Royal Albert, which also benefits from a better atmosphere. This pub can get a bit quiet, which makes me worry about how long it's going to be around for. I try to do my bit to support the place...You can quite easily make a night of it on most occasions here, whether you're having a beer with a mate and messing around with the juke box, having a decent dinner with your girlfriend (it's restaurant quality here), or getting a drink with your ale-only old man. Good toilets too, which I only mention because it's a rare thing in NX!

Our second visit was as as good as the first. The London Pride was delicious and our meal was from fresh ingredients cooked to order. So many places now seem to pre cook the food and just fry or reheat to serve. Both times at the Telegraph we have had very well cooked meals at a reasonable price.
We live miles away but will definitely be going back regularly to drink and eat. It is a treat to get good beer, fresh food and a relaxing atmosphere in well thought out surroundings.
Probably not original bar back but obviously old and rescued from another pub of old. The church pews are attractive and the large map blends in well.
All the pubs in this group are lovingly restored and on the whole serve good beer but alas this is the only one with decent food. A real gem.

Changed hands a few months back, but this pub is still a rough diamond. In a better location, there'd be a queue out the door.
Good things - excellent beers, both lager and bitter. Staff that give a damn. Candles! The decent jukey.
Bad things - the stuffed seagulls. Terrifying beyond all reason. Or perhaps that's just me.

This is a very nice pub indeed.
The actual wooden bar (pretty sure it's original) is one of the smartest I've ever seen in my drinking life.
The pub has wooden floors and is furnished with what looks like church pews / benches, which I think looks fantastic.
It's pretty big inside as the seating area stretches beyond the bar to the rear of the building.
They have Aspall's cider on draught, but for Lager drinkers, they only have 1 Czech Lager, which I'd never heard of.
They have a very decent jukebox, and amazingly it's free. Just punch in whatever tunes you fancy.
The only problem I have with this pub is it's location. I live about half a mile away and never even knew it existed until I cycled past it by chance.
It's just off New Cross Road, but kind of tucked away in a residential area.
As a result, it's always been kind of empty during my 5 or 6 visits, which of course doesn't help atmosphere wise. Although it does seem to attract a mixed and relaxed clientelle.
All in all it's most certainly worth a visit, if you live anywhere near it.
