user reviews of the Packhorse and Talbot, Chiswick

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Greene King pub on the main drag in Chiswick. It's a fairly large place with plenty of space for drinkers. Live Premier League football was being shown on my Friday evening visit. Greene King IPA was supplemented y Wimbledon Common Pale & Red Leaf, Black Sheep Best Bitter & Truman's Runner. Probably one of Chiswick's better pubs. But nothing special in the grand scheme of things.

How things turn, the (under major threat of being destroyed) Packhorse & Talbot is now the only venue that you can call a "pub" on the oh so Darling Chiswick High Road. £2000 baby buggies infest every other place, so very sad.

Baronloft - 8 Oct 2016 18:49
poor excuse for a pub will not use again, stay away for your own safety
proinnseas - 28 Jun 2012 12:44
Called in for a quick snack & a cup of tea as i was driving some distance.
Must say my wife & i was very pleased with the courtesty & service of the
staff., & i will add that the toilets were very clean.- THANKYOU.
babby - 11 Jun 2012 16:34
Vile slop at absurd prices served by a couple who, from the lemon-sucking expressions on their faces, have either drunk their own beer or lost their savings buying the place.
DapB - 20 Dec 2011 21:24
Dismal. I don't think anyone cleans the beer lines, the lavatory is constantly awash, they had run out of tonic and the staff all look bored.

The food is indifferent at best and the price of beer is ridiculous, considering you get to drink it to the constant sound of whining, foul-mouthed old men - and even then their symphony for sputum is better than the music on offer.

The Packhorse and Talbot is a large roadhouse type of pub on the main Chiswick High Road.

Outside the pub, an information board tells us that a talbot acted as a guide dog for a traveller with a pack horse, and that this pub was simply called The Pack Horse between 1698 and 1811. It was frequently confused with the other Pack Horse ( this being The Old Pack Horse - the Fullers pub further down on the other side of the road ).

The Packhorse and Talbot is part of the Punch Taverns empire and is a typical large chain pub outlet with a variety of different areas and that rather generic impersonal feel that such pubs often have. There's a few TV screens dotted about and a food orientated area at the back of the pub, but it's one of those pubs that's trying to be all things to all men. In this respect, it's a notable exception to the rule for Chiswick.

On my recent Sunday afternoon visit, it was doubtful whether the John Bonser 3 minute service standard was met, despite their being hardly any other customers waiting. Beers on were GK Abbot, London Pride and Youngs London Gold. The London Gold - 2.75p - was in reasonable form and probably represents better value for money than the London Pride at 3.15p.

This is one of those typical template pubs that are difficult to specifically like or dislike, and I'm not putting it down for a return visit any time soon.
JohnBonser - 15 Jun 2010 12:56
Popped in for a very quick one, and was disappointed that the Youngs London Gold ran out part-way through pouring. However, the barman asked whether I would like him to try to get a pint directly out of the barrel rather than wait for it to be changed. Took the risk, and off he went to the cellar and returned with a nice clear pint. Inside, the building has the look of a town pub trying to compete with a nearby Wetherspoons rather than the sort of fancy gastro-bar so prevalent in the area. Not great, but certainly better than I was expecting.
rpadam - 28 Nov 2009 22:23
Called there this evening for a meal. A large pub on a busy main road, but I was still able to get a table at 7pm on a Friday evening.
A good, traditional pub food menu (none of the pretentious gastro-type food that seems to dominate everywhere else in the area!) with decent sized portions at very reasonable prices.
Two cask ales (Pride and Landlord). I had the Pride, which was ok but by no means the best pint in the area.
The bar staff were very friendly and attentive too. Overall probably more of a convenience-type pub that one to head specially to, but certainly no complaints.

Ahh, this picture does it no justice! What a fantastic pub! Beautiful decor and friendly atmosphere, great beers and tasty food. I have been in three times this week since first going in on Sunday for lunch (I had the lamb shank, YUM!)
As a chiswick resident I can positively say that this pub has totally turned around from the reputation it once had, to a pub I will definately be frequenting with my chums and am SO taking my Dad to see the live jazz on fathers day. Well done!
Alexandra_79 - 12 Jun 2008 20:12
I had to wait to be served as the lone barmaid was messing about with the coffee machine behind the bar. Whilst I waited I noted that there were lots of different lagers available along with Pride, Tim Taylor, Honeydew and Bombardier. When I was finally served the barmaid was friendly although she may have waited until she had given my change back to me before answering the ringing phone.

I had a butchers at the food menu and it seemed like proper down to earth pub food Makes a change!

There is a covered area outside the pub to the rear and the front.

I wouldnt go out of my way to drink here, but there are far worse in Chiswick.
Strongers - 28 Apr 2008 13:44
Noticed the revamped exterior and decided to call in to check it out as haven't been in for ages. Recently refurbed about 6 weeks ago. Very impressed with the new interior decor. Had just eaten elsewhere, but the packhorse has a good traditional pub menu (not usual gastro stuff you see everywhere now) Will definately visit again to try the food.
Service was okay, although had run out of sparkling mineral water. Was a quiet Sunday afternoon. Be interesting to see what it's like when busier.
Panther - 20 Apr 2008 18:03
Cracking pub - with tasty barmaids who are very honest and clean
ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 14:56
Not impressive at all. The service ranged from average to awful, and the atmosphere was non-existant. Not really much else to add to the other comments, except to agree that you should avoid this place if you can help it.
kevj - 19 Feb 2007 09:59
Poor. Service exceptionally slow, with one of the staff keen to do anything but serve customers. Could also do with ID checks on certain punters. Soft drinks ridiculously expensive. Avoid, if possible.
anonymous - 7 Jan 2007 02:27
DON'T BOTHER! The Packhorse has always been a useful local (especially since I'm a big Arsenal fan) but had a pretty nasty experience popping in for a drink with some friends over Christmas. Landlord has a go at us for ordering cokes (we had just played an hour of football) and I said it was a shame he had to be rude to us as we would not want to go there again. His response - "I couldnt give a s**t". Shame he doesn't value his customers much.
Chiswicklocal - 31 Dec 2006 00:06
Popped in here a while ago on the way back from the Dove - because it was raining. Seemed a pretty ordinary sort of place to me. Clientele seemed inoffensive; got the pint I wanted which as I recall was OK; sat in the (covered) outside area which was comfortable enough. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it again, but would be happy to have another pint in there if I happened to be in the area. But I accept that a pub becomes a completely different place if (like kansascity below) all your chums go in there.
RexRattus - 29 Dec 2006 13:54
Ignore the post below - the poor yank clearly knows nothi ng about good pubs. The service is unfriendly, the chav customers are even MORE unfriendly, and the brilliant George IV is just 100m down the road - need I say more?
edznissen - 29 Dec 2006 13:02
Handsdown the best pub in all of England. And I'm speaking from experience, I spent more time in that place in the past year than most parents spend with their children. Anyone who disagrees is more than welcome to fly to kansas city and have their ass personally kicked by me because they more than deserve it. Much love to michael, nula, andy, rob, becca, kess, flo, amy, oli, neil, the builders from across the road, richard, and the rest of ya. hope your all doin fine, and we'll see ya before too long.

You get what you pay for in Chiswick, and this pub is a perfect example. It's cheap, cheerful, great for watching a game of footie. Food is average and a little overpriced, but hey, we're in W4 so you're going to pay a little extra. Don't come here expecting miracles and you won't be disappointed - this is a large, corporate, pleasant pub which is good for a cheap pint.
abacus3 - 10 Sep 2006 12:15
One of the worst pubs in Chiswick. Despite its good location, it remains a rather souless place. Food and beer are nothing to write home about. Service is regularly poor as well.

The pub attracts chavs in the same way flies are attracted to s**t. I suppose at least it means they avoid the other local pubs.
Cropstar - 14 Jul 2006 16:08
I always confuse this pub with the George further down the road. I've been here several times and there's something just not quite right about it. It's large. It's atmosphereless and soulless. It shows football. It attracts Blokes with a capital B. I've got it; despite my handful of visits, I always feel like I've walked into a threatening local where no-one knows my name. And that's why I'm singularly unimpressed.
Ruby - 30 May 2006 20:41
Average at best pub. I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like about this pub, the service wasn't great but there's something about the atmosphere which doesn't make for the greatest experience. The kind of pub you'd expect on Chiswick High Road, I suppose.
C.B - 11 May 2006 18:30
Not the worst pub in chiswick but seems to be attracting a certain element if they can nip it in the bud it could be a cracking pub
juzza - 9 May 2006 10:38
What pub are we even talking about? I'm confused!!!!

I quite like the Packhorse & T, as per my comments below - but do try to avoid when the circus is in town.

CheekyShepherd - 13 Apr 2006 13:41
Anonymous started it!
p.s I'm extremely well educated and would never look at another mans missus as i'm very happy with my wife thank you very much.
bobl72 - 13 Apr 2006 11:08
SHUT UP about the football. Who gives a toss! It was nice and cosy when I went and the food and table service rather good too. Lets stick to just rating the actual pubs and not slating everything in sight please!
Tiny - 13 Apr 2006 09:40
Chelsea or Arsenal? Who cares? Both teams are well hated, and for good reason. So many Chelsea "fans" about these days, you can't walk down Chiswick High Road for tripping over one.
The food is the only good thing this pub has going for it, and only in the weekday afternoons.
Steer well clear of here at other times, unless you want big groups of uneducated football fans (Chelsea or Arsenal, who cares) staring at you (or your Mrs.), or Albanians (doing the same).
anonymous - 12 Apr 2006 12:32
The comment below makes me laugh - cos I know of a Chelsea fan who got lost on the way to Stamford Bridge and got off the train at Stamford Brook Station!!!

This must be a common occurence for so many Blues fans to be drinking in Hammersmith and Chiswick!!
CheekyShepherd - 12 Apr 2006 10:46
I have watched The Arse there a few times and disagree as a gooner myself. I found it to be mostly Rangers on a Saturday but predominantly Nouveau Chelsea on Sundays, you know the ones who havent quite found The Bridge yet.
bobl72 - 12 Apr 2006 08:07
Gooner pub with Gooner customers (and a Gooner manager. Strange, eh?).
To be fair though, you can sometimes get good service, but if you're a regular you seem to get prioritised. Not a great way to get more regulars.
Food is decent, but can take a while to arrive. Evenings and weekends are full of large groups of lads, but the Sunday roast is (haven't had one for a while though) fantastic.
anonymous - 10 Apr 2006 20:19
I think this is a good pub for super sundays! Football, and the roast is excellent. There is also a cheeky blonde beer that I knew the name of when I started drinking it, but by the end of the evening i'd forgot my own anyway, but try it.
bobl72 - 23 Mar 2006 14:23
I am yet to go back here since moving to Chiswick but I will very soon as it was a lovely cosy and warm pub with very friendly and helpful staff with a great table service for food. Nice atmosphere and v spacious. Thumbs up! Food v nice too!
Tiny - 17 Jan 2006 23:21
Been in there twice. I figured that the rude, inattentive staff may have been a one-off. They weren't. There won't be a third visit.
anonymous - 11 Dec 2005 21:21
It is grrrrrreat! Friendly staff, top food, luvvely jubbely! Smashing Baby, yeah!
martin_geraghty - 7 Oct 2005 07:08
Great pub, great food, friendly bar staff - if your in Chiswick there's simply no better pub.

muzza - 5 Oct 2005 23:26
pub is fantastic, food is superb have the steak hmmmmm steak.... staff are polite and friendly
anonymous - 5 Oct 2005 19:27
No-nonense sort of Pub. I drink here every now and then, even though it sometimes is time-consuming to get the E3 from Acton to go there. The food is good (especially the burgers), and the beer is always good to sip on (always cold). Usually watch football in here too(go the Superhoops).
If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "GOLD".
PeterFrancisBell - 5 Oct 2005 13:14
Well worth a visit. Great food, great beer (big pints of erdinger), and great atmosphere. Fair bit of filth working behind the bar also.

BigDog - 5 Oct 2005 13:05
Fairly large, modern pub, with really good food and well kept Pride and Youngs. I'd certainly stop in again.
ale_brewer - 14 Aug 2005 14:52
this pub was well good, n the people were really friendly including the punters.....differnet ages were there. x
alki - 8 Aug 2005 13:42
Very attractive bar. Nice range of food and drink, especially continental beers. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
JoyceKonacho - 27 Jul 2005 11:09
This is the best pub by far on Chiswick High Road. It's always busy and friendly with nice people going in there, the staff are very good and it's not expensive. I've visited about 5 times over the last month and could not fault it. I think Miss Smith must have been having a bad day. There is no way it could be described as a dive because it's very clean and new looking. The food is also very good and reasonably priced.
Pat - 22 Jul 2005 12:54
Felt very annoyed with the treatment i recived from the members of staff, and would like head office main contact so i can complain. Advice to others don't bother going a complete dive!!!!
MissSmith - 12 Jul 2005 22:57
nice place, staff was a bit lost, but I could tell it was her first day... nice food, good to watch sports... well done.
anonymous - 21 Jun 2005 16:15
Not eaten here so can't comment on the food but I've definately not seen any evidence of druggies or chavs. Only an average boozer but I wouldn't call it one to avoid.
realalesnob - 10 Jun 2005 14:45
no personality, clueless staff and horrible food... much better places in chiswick
anonymous - 7 Jun 2005 19:17
Love it. The best pub in chiswick. The staff hmmmmm.... fantastic!
PeterS - 16 May 2005 16:40
I preferred this place when they had the pool tables, but it's still a great boozer. Whether you're with a group or on the todd, you'll feel welcome. Comfortable atmosphere and affordable prices. It gets incredibly busy in the evenings and at weekends, especially during the footie.
Marvellous!
CheekyShepherd - 29 Mar 2005 00:55
Not been in for a while (last time they still had the pool tables) but this was always one of the best and liveliest pubs in Chiswick, had many a fantastic night here, must pop back soon !!!!
ChelseaLes - 3 Mar 2005 12:18
Excellent. Just want to keep going. big screens, and also a meeting place. Bar staff are great.
hambo - 24 Feb 2005 12:31
recently moved to the area. this is now my local. sunday roasts are perfection and barmaids are the best looking i've ever seen. highly recommended.
anonymous - 12 Feb 2005 03:36
Has lost a lot of character in recent years. Was once a great pub to visit. Its decent enough now but there is so much choice about in Chiswick that I hardly find myself there.
anonymous - 23 Jan 2005 18:52
Large, fairly standard boozer with two real ales on pump and the usual lagers. Steve's experience of 5 Jun 2003 was not unique: I had the same thing of someone coming to the bar after me and being served first, _and_ there was only me and him at the bar.
beeronaut - 14 Jan 2005 11:14
A pub with little atmostphere, no pool tables (the listing is now well out of date!!) and flat beer. There are several other pubs in walking distance of this which are worth looking at before this one. However the food is ok and the service quick and friendly.
skandal - 12 Dec 2004 12:34
Not the worst pub around but not the best either. As has been said, a mediocre pub, but not bad for a quick drink if you're around Chiswick.
Dave - 31 Oct 2004 16:47
Went there the other night. They've taken out the pool tables, so it's now possible to watch the 'big screen' without having to peer through the pool players. No sign of the sixteen year olds who used to pack that end of the pub. Maybe there is hope for the P&T yet...
Johnno - 25 Aug 2004 16:31
I'm amazed by the positive comments. A large mediocre pub, though admittedly is has been smartened up a bit.
Dave - 16 Jul 2004 17:02
Quite nice and friendly, beer certainly is not cheap (it is chiswich).

But the gents honk.
CT - 18 May 2004 13:56
Bit of a Jekyll and Hyde of a pub. The end by the pool tables tends to be full of kids, but the end by the windows at the front can be a nice place for a quiet drink. Very mixed clientele, and staff are a mixed bag too, and seem to change at a high rate. Overrall a very middle-of-the-road sort of pub.
Johnno - 19 Apr 2004 13:30
my local pub for the last month and bar staff are great!!!
Always with a smile !!!

thomas - 1 Mar 2004 15:41
Absolutely rank. Set out like a motorway service station cafe it attracts a motley crew. Just awful really.
Good for: maybe an afternoon? I haven't done much daytime drinking in the Chiswick area.
thenationofjames - 2 Dec 2003 13:48
Nice mix of new and traditional. Unbelievable patterned carpet, must be seen to be believed.
James1 - 25 Oct 2003 18:14
This pub SCREAMS quality.
Eddo - 15 Sep 2003 14:09
much better after being tarted up. courtyard at back good spot on hot days or sit at the tables out front to watch chiswick go by.bar staff not too good at serving in turn though esp if your a female you can get ignored.
millym - 25 Jul 2003 21:28
Despite being quiet took ages to get served as staff kept serving people who got to the bar after me. You people that make your request when you know somebody's been waiting longer - read up on bar rules! Walked out in the end and went to the George 2 mins to the left, better pub.
Steve - 5 Jun 2003 08:08
went there for new years, was great for a pommie pub. Beer was a bit flat. - Im from Perth
anonymous - 21 Apr 2003 13:34
excellent screens for footy; big airy pub; hidden outdoor part for summer and good british ale
anonymous - 3 Mar 2003 12:09
Great Pub , Landlord has a great sense of humor. and very little staff turnover.
fouracc - 10 Dec 2002 17:32
