Return visit to the Waggon & Horses that I believed may have changed hands since my last visit. It's still owned by Batemans. So the ales are mainly from them - Salem Porter, Hooker, East Coast Screamer & XXXB. But they also had two guests - Brewsmith Anvil Ale & Oakham Citra. Ciders were Rosie's Pig & Cheddar Valley. Having been somewhat inebriated on my last visit and using the bar to prop myself up, I had a better chance to explore the interior this time round. There are 4 or 5 small rooms. One at the rear also has access to the bar and is quite cosy. The place was fairly busy with the rugby being shown in the main room. We ordered two of their burgers which were filling and quite tasty. Still a good pub. But it feels like Batemans have more of a hold over it now, making the ale range a touch more predictable.

A surprising pub inside as it don't look much from the outside.
My first opinion was this is a little gem.
We visited around 7.30 on a Monday evening and it was pretty busy, a group of fellas getting ready for a poker tournament.
6 ales across the pumps & 2 real ciders. With a varied choice of beers I was spoilt for choice so I went for a pint of Hales Brewery Fallen Heart @ 4.3%.
A good mix of locals and a rather drunk Geordie woman added to the atmosphere, landlord and bar maid very chatty and welcoming.
Bar Billards table in one room and sky sports on in the main bar.
A thoroughly decent pub that serves a varied selection of great beer.

Well, I'd previously been to the Rook & Gaskill just opposite here. But I'd never ventured into the Waggon & Horses previously. Both are very good pubs. The Waggon & Horses was a little quiet though. But the ale selection was good - Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Roosters The Italian Job, Batemans XXXB & Black & White, Wold Top Hello Velo & Salem Bridge Salem Porter. Ciders were Westons Rosie's Pig & Wyld Wood & The Bootle Kicking Cider Co. Rambler. I must remember to come out here to visit these pubs again next time I'm in York. Sadly I had no time to do the Rook & Gaskill this year.

Surprised to see so few reviews; as this pub served superb quality beer. A bit quieter tonight than last year but the Yella Belly, which I've never had a good pint of before, is majestic again. Friendly staff who asked if I wanted a top up. Great pub.

Only went in here because the Rook opposite was shut; thank goodness it was. This pub is superb. The range of beers is only supassed by the landlord's enthusiasm and knowledge. Apart for the amazing Batemans Salem Porter there was a wide range of micros including a stout. We went back later in the weekend for an evening there and for something to eat. Highly recommended

A bit like the Palmerson Arms in Peterborough is (or was), a fantastic drinkers pub owned by Batemans, selling great quality beers by smaller brewers such as Osset (Silver King fabulous).

Because of the odd spelling of "waggon", I'm sure some visitors to York miss this place - but well worth finding. Excellent atmosphere and great beer.

I understand that this pub still sells Batemans beers but can now get ales from all over the place so that makes it even better than ever!! It has also just been voted Pub of The Year by the local CAMRA branch and quite rightly so. Terrific place which was heaving went we visited. Great selection of beers (Great Heck being very excellent) and live R&B music in the side room. The landlord was obviously well-chuffed with his new award and was in "high spirits" which made the whole place feel good as well. We eventually found a seat and had another beer(I had forgotten the names by this time). Pump clips adorn the walls and this is yet another "must visit" pub when in town - try also the Rose & Crown next door and The Rook and Caskill across the road for a good little pub crawl. Highly recommended.

This is one of my favourite pubs in York. Full of character and a friendly Landlord who knows his beer. I had an absolutely superb pint of Batemans Mild, had to stay for a few more!

Very friendly landlord who knows his beer and keeps a quality collection of real ales across hos short bar, I am told there are other rooms but never left the front bar. Excellent place for a quiet beer most days and a regular quiz and live music on occassion.

Good pub just outside the city walls, with emphasis on beer. We stayed here on a visit to York in June. Food so-so, room OK but nothing exceptional (reasonable price), beer v. good. Enthusiastic landlord. Unfortunately no Bateman's Mild on our visit. York is a wonderful place for a crawl, and this seems fine as a base to crawl from.

Reopened after a long period of closure and going from strength to strength. A Bateman's pub, it features their range plus guests, which on my visit were York Nordic Fury, Titanic Lifeboat, Rooster Yankee and Rudgate Ruby Mild. Had a Bateman's GHA which was excellent. The pub retains four separate drinking areas including a front bar room, games room and a snug lounge at the back which is the most characterful with a library of books in glass cases on the wall. The front bar shows Sky Sports on an unobtrusive TV. This pub has just won York CAMRA's pub of the season as a reflection of its success, and can now be combined with the Phoenix and Rook and Gaskill for a rewarding crawl. Definitely worth a visit.

Excellent pub with a good choice of beer on offer. Good prices too. Freindly bar staff.

Late review from November. Early for Rook and Gaskill and saw this one was open and what a lovely pub. Ever so friendly and enjoyed chatting with the owners while enjoying our Oldershaw, Riverside and Bateman beers. One of the few pubs I revisited while in York this time.
|
What a splendid selection of fine ales! Eight handpumps but only managed six of the selection over two sessions. I don't know what this pub was like before undergoing an extensive refurbishment but what is there now shows a tasteful regard of existing features with the addition of some lovely letting rooms (well, I only stayed in one and I expect the others are to the same standard).
Paul and Mandy are very welcoming as are the staff I met. You can be well fed here as well as being well watered. If you are travelling by bus, there's a stop right outside so you can virtually fall off the bus and into the front door.
I highly recommend this establishment. Surely most real ale drinkes canm find satisfaction here.
Cheers! - Mike Higham

The landlord/lady were very friendly, and the beer - mostly from the Batemans range - was excellent. The pub has recently undergone a complete refurb which has uncovered all the original features. Well worth a visit to that end of town with the Rook and Gaskell and the Spread Eagle - both excellent pubs - a couple of mins walk away.

Recently been bought and refurbished by George Batemans. Now selling a superb range of Bateman and guest beers, excellent value food and luxurious accommodation. If you knew this pub previously then forget all memories the pub has been completely transformed, gone are the lino, pool table & Karaoke and in are comfortable leather sofas, luxurious carpeting and a cosey snug. You are assured a warm welcome from Paul, Mandy, family & staff.

Really starting to pick up, whoever has taken it on is putting a lot of elbow grease and hard graft into making it a busy local boozer again. Keep it up :)

I appreciate what Dave's says, but everytime I went in, both the regulars and landlady were extremly kind to me and my studenty friends. Most welcoming, chatty, and invited to get couple of beers in before time. They also used to put on live accoustic music evenings, when a couple of friends would go down, and play a few tunes and requests. Great nights. Is good to hear that someone has taken on the lease and has plans for the place!
|
Pub no longer to let, and it's not going to be flats!!!! I appreciate that the smell and decor are both pretty grim, but they will both be sorted out soon! Come down and see us from the middle of April onwards.

Shame. Yet another York pub with the familiar "Pub to Let" sign outside. Decor is like something from a sixties terraced house and smells like one as well. Opens sporadically and really can't see this being anything other than flats in 6 months time. 4 years ago this place was a cracking little boozer with a great turnover, shows how things can change.
