This is a cracking old style pub with flagstone floors etc.
The lovely beer garden out back has a real countryside feel to it.
There's not much else in Freshwater Bay, so, if you find yourself in the area, I strongly recommend a visit to The Red Lion.
I didn't find a better pub on the Island.

Lovely setting next to the church. Mainly set up for food, but with a drinkers area around the bar. The Butcombe was fine and the food was very good. Well worth a visit.

Visited here on Monday during a Day visit to the I.O.W. Walked from Yarmouth to Freshwater along a designated walk and ended up here. What a find!!! Had an excellent pint (very welcomed) of Goddards Fuddle-De-Dum 4.8%. also available was Sharps Doombar, and Good Old Boy and Mr Chubbs Bitter both form the West Berkshire Brewery. This is a nice pub adjacent to a church sited on a quiet road. some tables outside in the Front and a large beer garden at the rear. From the stickers in the window this place seems to be a regular in The Good Beer Guides and the Egon Ronay Food Guides. Staff were very welcoming and although I did not eat I am sure the food is good. The interior of the pub is traditional warm and inviting, although most tables were given over to food. Nevertheless this pub is high up on my places to revisit ASAP. 10/10 for the Beer.

Really great pub set in a pretty village. Good food and beer. Excellent garden but kids not encouraged (probably why it is so nice). Popular with walkers and cyclists. Well worth a visit.

Love this pub, have to visit every time I come to the island, and usually save it until our final night. The fish and chips are to die for! I come every year and I am never disappointed. Deserves to win an award!

The staff were appallingly rude. Had i known i would not eat here if i was starving.

We visited the Red Lion last night and were made to feel very welcome. A marvellous pub to visit early evening when the place is filled with locals, rather than later when the pub is infiltrated with grockles and eaters (good god that's us). The ales were well kept (we sampled the Goddard Special several times to make sure). An exceptional pub and well worth a trip out. Landlord 'Flight leutenant Jack Saxon' is the best host this side of the Bombadier club.

Our walking group had been looking forward to lunching at the Red Lion for some years. Last Sunday it fitted our itinery so at last we got to try it. A lovely looking pub which is matched by it's interior decor. We booked ahead & were given a table alongside the cosy fire. The welcome from the landlord & the bar staff could not have been bettered. Now to the nitty gritty. The Goddards beer was ok but I have tasted better. And the comments on the meals were much the same, it was o.k. but for an up market pub charging a little more than the average I expected better. My steak & mushroom pudding was once again 'O.K' but some of the vegetables were pureed & though reasonably tasty not what I expected. You can get away with a lot serving veg that way. A really nice pub but they could improve the meals. My rating a 7

Visited July 2009. Staff okay but certainly not friendly. Note no under-10s policy (execpt in garden) may appeal to some but didn't work for us due to impending rain. Real ale okay but not great. Food prices very high with no children's menu. We're IoW locals but left and went elsewhere farily nearby which was much better, with the same local beer but far better kept. The Red Lion is on the tourist route (walk from Yarmouth along old railway line) but my advice is to avoid, to be honest.

Stayed virtually next door to The Red Lion during our annual pilgrimage to the island in March. Its a nice pub serving well kept Goddards of which I had several pints. The Landlord was friendly as were the locals. The food is good - had fish and chips last year somewhen. look forward to returning next March for a few jars.

Busy dining pub next to the pretty church - the wooded graveyard is tranquil and cool on a hot day, but a bit more daunting after dusk! Pub serves local Goddards ale, which was well kept. The food is excellent, with real thick gravy on our Sunday roast beef. You need to book a table if you want to eat. The staff are well trained, and the landlord wears a cravat - so you can forecast that it's not for chavs. Parking can be a problem, but don't let that put you off.
