Great view of the Minster from the garden, and a decent pint of guzzler.

I'm pleased we booked a table in one of the back rooms so we could enjoy a decent lunch and a choice of 4 real ales way from the hurly burly of York at the weekend. Pleasant staff and decent quality - prices seemed reasonable, but we are from "down south" where everything is expensive! Recommended.

Not a pub we were planning to visit. But we thought we would give it a go as we were passing and it had been recommended to us by the landlord of the Minster Inn. It lies just inside one of the city gates. There is a small front bar and another couple of tiny rooms. But the highlight appears to be the popular garden at the rear, which acts as a suntrap and has views of York Minster. Everybody was sitting outside and there is an outdoor bar and barbecue. The ale range was fairly good - York Guzzler, Phoenix Black Bee, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Saltaire Raspberry Blonde & Old Mill Blonde Bombshell. Cider was Rosie's Pig.

This used to be the best pub in York by a county mile and you paid for this through the beer which was always the priciest in the city. Thing is you didn't mind because of the quality of the beer, the incredible building, great food, awesome staff, interesting and friendly regulars. Always busy, always something going on. This pub just had that little something. Unfortunately a change of management has pushed the prices up by another 30 pence in a year, I went in today and the price had gone up by another 10 pence in one jump, two weeks after the budget cut beer duty! No other pub in York has risen like this that I know of, along with all the staff changes, poor quality of beer (another recent addition!), awful beer choice (nearly always pale, below 4% and always local, not one from elsewhere in the country), and general feeling of doom hanging around the place I'm missing it from here on in. Damned shame.

Wow loved this pub nice little snug off of the main bar, nice pint of Black Sheep and also had a Yorkshire blond all round i think one of the best pubs in york though there are many more i didn't get to visit

Visited here at the weekend and had a decent pint of Blacksheep.. there were other ales on offer, however, I was at the back of a pub crawl and so I didnt get to see the bar. I like this pub, it has a nice atmosphere and its an unusual shape and design... it can get very busy at the front and so if you can get a table at one of the rear rooms then thats the place to be.

This was my second pub I came across and boy am I glad I did!

4 quality ales on, I stuck to the Golden Sheep brewed by Black Sheep which was quite exquisite. Don't think I've ever had a more cleaner looking pint! It was very refreshing - amber nectar! It cost about 3 a pint which later on I gathered was the norm for York.

At first I was in the main bar area which was very comfortable with views of the gated entrance of inner York. Then as I paid a visit to the gents - that's when the place really excited me. Various corridors surrounded by a real labyrinth of cosy snugs and side rooms gave the place a uniqueness and overall charm.

Things just got even better when I ventured outside to the beer garden. Very spacious with ample seating areas. The best thing for me was that the Roman walls adorned the garden adding to the ambiance.

A good solid 10/10 for me!

Highly recommended!!

I booked a table for dinner by phone 2 weeks ago because we were visiting York with family for the weekend. On the day of our visit, I popped in at lunchtime to check that they were still expecting us at 7.30pm. "No problem" I was told "You will be on Table 9". When we arrived on time, people were sitting at our table drinking and we were told that the table would be cleared as soon as possible. At 8pm there was still no sign of any table becoming free so we left. The service was atrocious, the free pint given as compensation was nice.

Early Friday evening and the place is full of office workers having a varied selection of drinks after work (although they do sell a lot of real ale in here and you can try 3 beers for the 3.30 which is a good idea). It is quite an up-market bar with one main room which gets very packed but there are other seating areas and the garden further down the building. Staff were very helpful and service was prompt. They also offer B&B and meals. I tried Golden Mane from Great Neck Brewery/Rudgate Ruby and Skipton Copper Dragon - all very pleasant and in good nick.
I suppose you could call this The Bar by The Bar as it right under the city wall at High Petergate and it marks the start(or finish) of a city centre pub crawl

Aiming for the top end of the ale drinking market, a bit of a pretentious feel about the place. That said, it's comfortable enough and a decent selection of ales available.

An absolute favourite when Jack had it, now not so sure. Still worth it for the beer garden.

As I always considered the Lamb & Lion a somewhat upmarket establishment I'd always make a point of avoiding this one, it seemed from the window to be rather stuffy, pricey and cliquey, but as it's been feted by CAMRA this year I decided to finally cross the threshold. Quite glad I did. A manageable range of beers, of which I had the very agreeable Osset's Sizzler (in contrast to the weather which most certainly wasn't). Very friendly service too and in all honesty I preferred the atmosphere to that of the lifestyle choice ambience that pervades the Three Legged Mare.

popped in here the last couple of times i've been to York.

Will be a good addition to the York beer experience if you haven't tried it yet

Good to see this pub has now reopened under the stewardship of Jack Merry (Ackhorne and Tap and Spile fame.) Not sure if he's still selling his curried eggs though

Now re-opened under new management. Friendly bar staff and a small selection of micro brewery Ales. Ok but a little more expensive than some of the other pubs in the area.

A real shame this pub has closed.

Now closed. Used to be a great pub with ace beer garden. Thanks RBS

Not a bad pub, but not cheap, and the barman that served me was a miserable sod. Beer was very good, and the snugs were nice.

Newly opened pub on a spot where one once stood for centuries until recent decades. It has an envable spot by Bootham Bar in the shadow of the Minster, and the beer garden is bordered by the wall and affords great views- would like to visit in summer.
Inside, the interior is quite similar to that of sister pub The Guy Fawkes in terms of ambience, with candles and dim lighting mixed with traditional furnishings creating a balance between historic and contemporary- either way the result is pleasant enough. The layout is more complicated though, with 'rear snugs' and a lounge accessed by several corridors as well as the front bar room giving it a labyrinthine feel. The lounge has a real fire but all tables were reserved on my visit so settled for the bar.
Piped music played and an emphasis on dining, although not to the total detriment of drinkers- a decent range of ales included- Golden Mane IPA, Black Sheep, Leprechaun Stout and Summer Wine Dambusters Dark Mild meaning the balance edged towards dark beers for a winter's evening. Nevertheless, plumped for Golden Mane which was a fine beer in good form.
This pub adds to the 4 already on the short Petergate, and I would say positively- it has a better beer range than The York and the Hole and is more atmosphereic than the Mare. Can see myself returning, and would recommend a visit.

Easily overlooked this pub is two old buildings knocked into one, formerly a well thought of restaurant, it nestles next to Bootham Bar on High Petergate - in York a bar is a gate and a gate is a street. Converted into a pub cum small hotel last year, it is owned by the people who own the Guy Fawkes Hotel further up High Petergate. Got a mention in the recent Guardian summer pubs supplement. Four pumps with a range of well kept UK regional and micro brewery beers with the less common Erdinger, and Bitburger plus Amstel and Kronenburg. Traditional dark wood front bar with bench seating, small dark wood tables and stools plus those daft tall two tier tables; bare floor boards and big clear windows complete the look. Down the corridor from the clinically tiled entrance are back snugs or small intimate drinking/dining rooms, also on the ground floor is a Top Parlour which is the ground floor of the second of the two buildings. This is a large elegant room with sash windows. Upstairs are the letting rooms.
