The modern, sterile interior betrays the promise of the beautiful timbered exterior. It resembles a chain with its infuriatingly high tables and chairs (does anyone honestly find them comfortable?) and meal deal menu. Six real ales on offer: Doom Bar was a bit warm but the Butty Bach was fine. The young staff were polite and I felt sorry for them having so little to do in a near-empty pub.

Well the outside is magnificent ! A black and white half-timbered building that, when you go inside and see the low beams and hotch-potch nature of the rooms, is definitely genuinely old. It’s not a bad pub either, with 6 real ales on when I was there. Mainly local (I had the Wye Valley Butty Bach – very pleasant), but also Tetley’s Cask. Previous poster have complained about the lack of atmosphere and service, but I had no problems, and the place was pretty full on a Saturday lunchtime. Most people were having lunch, but I didn’t feel out of place just drinking. However, I do have to say that there wasn’t anything particularly special about the place to make me want to come back again.

6/10 - a good solid pub

Terrible!

Disappointing place - no character inside with a "corporate" feel to the menu and bar. Either make a bar/restaurant/pub up-market and do it properly, or restore it to being a "proper pub" with character and warmth.

Basically, don't bother with. Try the Church for beer or Queens for food instead.

Did not call in on this visit to Ludlow as it has suffered from a corporate make over. Looking in it was empty on Saturday night and the whole place looked cold and uninviting, suffering from very bad economy lighting that gave the place a ghostly unfriendly feel. Sad as this used to have a very nice area at the back of the room on the left as you enter which had a bay window and fireplace across the corner. The room on the right used to be more of a bar area but even this was dead.

How nice does this pub look from the outside?
When we went in (Friday night) the right hand bar was empty and loud. Left hand side looks better but beers? Landlord and Black Sheep. 700 UK breweries to chose from including cracking local ones and they chose run-of-the-mill ales. So we didnt stop.
Go to the Church instead.

Still in the same hands, and still doing well. Particularly enjoyed lunch here recently.

Good place, very friendly. Ale generally good, and food also -Sunday roast is well worth trying.

This pub came in handy when I, and friends, were looking for somewhere to have lunch at about 3pm, forgetting Ludlow wasn't central London. It served us basic but tasty pub grub - I had a BLT baguette and chips and enjoyed it. Ale-wise there were about three available; I had a pint of the locally-brewed Ludlow Gold (available almost everywhere in Ludlow) and it was unsurprisingly good. The pub is divided into two separate halves with a central bar serving both. We were in the left-hand side which was slightly tatty. The landlord's service was pretty good.
