New landlord in charge; a friendly young man. I indulged in 3 ales on our recent visits: Marston's '61 Deep' [a hoppy & tasty ale], in house beer 'George & Dragon' [tasty pint] & Slater's 'Top Totty' [nice beer].

Not too many Marstons pubs in the Good Beer Guide.
Really enjoyed my visit here - Banks Bitter in great condition. Pub is a classic of its type - nice interior, with tiled walls and classic pub furniture.
Beer Garden worth checking out - its not every pub where you can drink on a listed Civil War piece of history.

Fantastic pub, best in Lichfield. Beer is kept really well and there is always an excellent choice. Friendly landlord and locals.

It took me less than 10 minutes to walk here from the Gatehouse so don�t let the �edge of the City centre� bit put you off.
This is a MUST visit if in Lichfield

Pleasant, very comfortable old fashioned pub on the edge of the City Centre, a stones throw from Lichfield Cathedral. Beer on recent visit was excellent. Perfect place to while away an afternoon with friends. Well worth a visit. A delight.

What to say about "The George", Ross and Keira are fantastic Hosts and keep excellent beer. Okay it is all from Marstons, Jennings or Ringwood predominantly...but always in excellent condition, the Boondoggle when it is on is to die for. Hobgoblin is the best I have ever Drunk and the Brakspears "Oxford Gold" is lovely and refreshing, they have recently won several awards including Cask Marque "Pub of the Year" and are CAMRA Pub of the Season for Summer 2011. Food is simple but tasty, soup or delicious filled cobs (rolls) and the cheese in the cheese and onion compliments the beers wonderfully well. Edge of the town location keeps the youngsters away and it is possible to enjoy good conversation whilst supping the beer....sounds so good I think I may just have to nip round later.

I like this small pub on the edge of town and despite, what I think is, a rather unsympathetic refurbishment it remains a decent sort of place to spend an hour or two. Friendly service and well kept beer. My only carp is that as a Marstons house guest beers have gone out of the window and only beers from the Marston's portfolio are now offered rather than genuine guests.

I used to visit this place quite often some years back, as i worked in Lichfield and it did a good Thursday night quiz. Then it closed. I am delighted to say this nice brick built pub is now back open and doing the quiz again i hear.
The inside has a couple of smallish room, all decked out in a traditional way, with some civil war memorabilia, as the big beer garden is part of the mound built by prince Rupert as a gun platform - some of the finds are on view in the pub. There is also a small smoking area.
The gaffer is friendly and will offer samples if you wish to try a beer. There are always several real ales on including; Banks's MILD and bitter, with a Jennings - the Snecklifter was excellent, other Marston's, the Merrie Monk was superb, as well as a Brakspear. I have been in three or four times since it reopened and the beers do change.
This pub, along with the Wellington and Queens Head, make up the triumvirate of top houses in Lichfield.
