City, Manchesterback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
After bolting from the hipster coolness of the Castle down the road I found this place. Not hip & not cool, and not the sort of pub you recommend to your maiden aunt. Customers were mostly sozzled or stoned & those who could talk did so in that loud fashion of the intoxicated, positive the world wants to hear their opinions. And this was around 3pm on a week day. My excursion to view the back blocks of Manchester's centre was eventful, but I was happy to return to more sober zones. A pint of something called Acorn, @ 2.70, was drinkable.

OH DEAR! Apologies for the writing the below comment last night, was bladdered. In review; decent enough boozer, good pint of boddies.

Called in here as part of Manc crawl. Cheap as chips!! (even cheaper if you get there before 6) The barmaid is a right babe. To quote one geezer...'shes got an arse nicer that Pippas', wouldn't disagree with that.....Think i'm in love. If you want a decent pint of boddies and a bit of eye candy, then this is the place.

'Discovered' the evening before working at the National Winter Ales Festival in 2010, on my list to revisit this year, so I did. Certainly reminds me of a few pubs around Nottingham I know, but the real ale was good and I'd happily go in time after time if I lived locally. Shame I was the only person in there at the time.

THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS ARE AMUSING TO SAY THE LEAST. Yes this pub has had a refurb and indeed now seemingly wants too attract real ale drinkers by providing the real stuff.
Do not be fooled however as this is still the same rough and unpleasant dump it always was with its regular clientele of chavs, mad old bints and the odd bemused stranger who ventures in.
However cask ales available....... just!

Been in a few times, beer in excellent condition and young lady behind the bar very friendly and always pleased to see us old ale 'eads. Give it a try.

Not to be confused with the better-known City Arms across town, this formerly downmarket boozer is in the Northern Quarter, a stone's throw from the Crown and Kettle and also close to Bar Fringe and The Castle. It's been one to avoid as long as I remember, a keg-only zone with little to appeal to the discerning drinker. However, the landlord has recently installed some pumps and hoped to make real ale a big seller here, so I popped in. It's a long, basic 1 roomer with traditional furnishings and a pool table at the bottom. Mature, exclusively local clientele and sport shown, and a careworn feel. Surprised to see Hawkshead Lakeland Gold alongside the two Acorn beers (Gorlovka stout and City Pride which has the Manchester coat of arms and looks like a house beer). Tried the Hawkshead and pleased to say it was excellent. According to the local CAMRA rag, the landlord believes it'll take a while to get real ale to take off here, and I can see why, this still isn't the usual sort of pub the ale drinker would go to. However, it's good to see an effort being made and I urge people to try it at least once as part of a Northern Quarter crawl.

Whoops regarding previous comment, NWAF not MWAF, National not Manchester (although it is held in Manchester of course)

Under new management who have the old clientele who are lager boys and blue WKD girls. A rough and ready pub that had the Acorn Ales on when I visited, I must say probably one of the best pints I'd tasted in Manchester and considering I'd been to the Manchester Winter Ales Festival (MWAF) and some classic Manchester pubs that's high praise indeed. These are the sort of pubs that CAMRA should be supporting.

Called in for the first time while visiting for NWAF and found Acorn beers on in very good condition. Pub has a large bar area that looks new, and I got the impression it had been taken over and in the process of a refurb. Long room to the back of the pub with some comfy seating and looked a locals pub by the friendly banter with the staff. Decor in need of attention, but will call in again when next in the city to see how it is getting on.
