We tried this place yesterday after seeing it in the new Good Beer Guide. Unfortunately it was nowhere near as good as Broood. So we'd wished we'd done these 2 the other way round. Ales were Thwaite's Lancaster Bomber, Blue Monkey BG Sips, Marston's Old Empire, Frothblowers Piffle Stonker & Milestone Shine On & Oktoberfest. Ciders were all from Lilley's - Mango Cider, Strawberry Cider & Rum Cider. I asked for the Rum Cider. But there was an overwhelming taste of pipe cleaner with perhaps a hint of mango. I've still no idea if it was the correct cider. Ales weren't in the best condition either. A good CAMRA discount is offered though and the long, thin interior of the pub allows for plenty of space with a mixture of drinkers, families and diners. There is a pool table at the far end. A touch disappointing.

Now called "The Bowling Green". Excellent range of ales and food - very cheap if you buy two meals together and also very reasonably priced roast Sunday lunches. Plenty of seats even before a match, welcoming home and away fans. Drinks and (especially) food absolutely delicious. The only downside: it can be a long wait for the food - and an even longer wait for cutlery to eat it with before it gets cold!

go in before city games with my lad and my old man. staff are nice, 3 ales on including tiger and its relaxed and no idiots allowed. yeah its full of students but it is a student pub so not exactly rocket science to see em really!
|
Brilliant little pub, loads of character. The staff are friendly & it's not too pricey either. worth checking out the Open Mic night on a Sunday
|
This is a great pub and I spent most of my student years here. I love it that much that I still go. It has plenty of character and atmosphere. The drinks are cheap, the food is cheap AND it now has real ale! Winner! I recommend Quids on Thurs and Open Mic on Sunday.
|
Now offering a handful of cask ales.
Sadly the muppets running the place wouldn't know how to keep a decent pint if their lives depended upon it.
Still firmly wedged on the "No F*cking Way" list

had best times of my student life here! cant understand all the negative reviews!?!?! Its a student Pub after all, and a decent one at that! P*ss off back to Ur crusty 'traditional' pubs if thats what Your after!

Had an amazing time in this pub and can't understand all the nonsense reviews. I am not a student and enjoyed my time spent here. I went on a Sunday and was pleasantly suprised to find it was open-mic night. The whole atmosphere of the Polar Bear was relaxing. I would Certainly recommend a visit.

Dirty, foetid hole full of coked up DMU students and town centre chavs looking for an easy shag.
Has the usual Scream approach to decor (ie: tasteless colour scheme, poor grade furnishings and dim lighting) and the usual Scream approach to beverage stocks - fizzy, pasteurised (and often brightly coloured) alcholic urine designed with nothing more in mind than turning students into drunken imbeciles barely capable of tying their own laces.
As with other pubs of this type though, it does act as a kind of (sadly non-lethal) concentration camp on Friday and Saturday nights, keeping the better pubs free for the better class of punter.
I was a student in Leicester, and even in those halcyon days I never drank in this sordid little dive.
Recommended like Cholera.

I cringe every time I go past this place now. What was once a respectable pub has been turned into a parody of one. Such a fine building - it's like putting a pig on lipstick.
|
cheap drinks, lots of students, and little atmosphere - same as all the other its a scream pubs. used to be a fantastic pub, when it was the bowling green many, many years ago.
|
cheap booze, healthy sized portions, fit barmen....i mean what more can we ask?
|
Bastard Scream pub that destroyed one of Leicester's oldest pubs. Suffice to say, that unless you're a mindless student from DMU, you'll hate this place. Crap, cheap, booze and rubbish food. Grrrr!!!

One of the best pubs in Leicester. Despite being a Scream pub, Polar Bear retains a streak of individuality. It's a minute away from sister pub Soar Point, but has a completely different atmosphere, catering more towards the alternative scene. Food is generally excellent, with generous portions although I'd recommend avoiding the lunchtime rush. The barstaff might not sleep with you, but they seem to work hard to help create a friendly atmosphere in a pub that's great to chill out in and have a laugh. Unsuprisingly it is a student pub so if you're a fan of traditional pub decor or real ale, you might be disappointed.

Can't believe this fizzy lager chain pub got in the final of Pub of the Year. Must be a lot of dim students doing the voting. Cheap rubbishy drinks and attractive barstaff maketh a pub not my friends (they'll never sleep with you anyway, the barstaff that is, you may get somewhere with the drinks tho). If you want a decent pub kids, nip up the road to.... whoops, on second thoughts, stay in your Scream pubs pleeeeaaaase !

cool staff, cheap beer and food, and always full of cool people. Oh and plenty of pool tables, fruities and a decent jukebox!
|

This pub is the bomb, bar staff are the friendliest and the fittest weve ever seen (Not the blokes) Check out Lorna enough said. She's a national monument to good taste.

Scream pub with beer garden. Usual Scream offers. Chilled, friendly staff (who enjoy themselves), fun, and no trouble, even when the footies on.
