I'm not sure whether the name is supposed to be Wheatsheaf or Wheat Sheaf. But either way, this was another good Felling pub spoilt only by its lack of custom. There was myself, the barman and one other person who may even have been the landlord. Run by the Big Lamp brewery, 4 of their ales were on - Keelman Brown, Sunny Daze, Prince Bishop Ale & Bitter. The interior is as Snarling Mallard says very traditional. There was no draught cider. But I did notice a large bottle of a Westons cider that may be used to dispense pints/halves. Would like to come back when it's a bit more lively. But I liked this place.

This really is an old school locals pub - looks it from the outside and the inside. Real ales (from Big Lamp) and real fire (nice as it was a bit parky out). The ale wasn't top notch but was drinkable. Worth the short metro ride out to Felling though.

If you like live traditional music, try going on a tuesday night, although it must be said some nights are good and some nights are bad. At least most of the time it's enthusiastic. The air conditioning in the gents toilets is fantastic and in the winter you can see some great ice formations. Love it.

Jim,
Beware the 28th/29th January 2011! Get the beers in!

Just a small correction, the pub is near Felling Metro, just down the street from the Old Fox. Serves a range of Big Lamp beers, always well kept.

Fine traditional pub a short walk from Pelaw metro station. It occupies a corner, and has a tiled exterior with a cermamic pillar in front of the doorway leading down nto the mosaic entrance. Inside, it's not quite as spectacular but is a good solid boozer, with two roos all traditionally furnished, the rear one with a fire and small TV. A good beer range from North East Micros, including Durham, Wylam and Northumberland. Had a Northumberland beer, the name of which unfortunately escapes me, but it was excellent. Mainly popular with locals and older customers, this is probably the best pub in what is an uninspring town for real ale. If you've done all the Newcastle boozers, you could do worse than to take the short Metro trip out to this place. Beware of the late opening though.

Excellent old fashioned pub, wonderful landlord. Great Big Lamp beers. Reccommended highly.

Although not exactly on a back street, this is an old fashioned pub of that type but which is now probably best known as being the second outlet for the Big Lamp Brewery. Four different ales on, including a tasty brew in honour of the Gateshead Thunder rugby team. The pub was quiet in mid-afternoon so I had a good chat with the friendly landlord.

Excellent unspoiled pub, good, well-priced beer, and occasional folk music nights for those who like that sort of thing. A little gem, and just a couple of minutes walk from Felling metro.
