On a recommendation, we took a stroll out from nearby Flatford Mill to come to Dedham for the craft shop at the old chapel. We then thought we'd have a mooch about the village and then decided to pop in here for a pint as it appeared to be more in use than the other pub we passed. A great selection of both handpull and tap beers was on the bar. My wife had a pint of the Brewdog IPA, whilst me and my friend had the Dark Star Skinner's PA - which was in very good nick. We then went into the room to the right from the entrance to drink them. The fire was roaring in the log burner and we sat on the big old chairs and enjoyed our beers. A very nice little find.

Clean, bright and welcoming inn with a long sunny garden. The Crouch Vale Brewers Gold was well kept and there were three more interesting ales on tap. Aspalls Harry Sparrow cider was also to be had. An accurate rating for an entirely worthwhile pub.

Packed - most of pub given over to food but enough room round bar for drinkers. real fire and real ales mostly local - Broadside was delicious. Friendly hardworking, cheery staff - good pub.

Pleasant pub with a good choice of beers. First pint was cloudy (end of barrel), but changed without any question. Food is very good quality - but at a price to match.

Great pub still but beer quality very poor on my visit as were *real* pint measures too - Tut, tut! Worst pint of Brewers Gold I've drank in a long time and closely watched a disagreement between the two bar staff that were on as to whether there was a problem with the beer or not, put it this way they carried on serving it despite it's poor condition!

15th Century pub and restaurant in Dedham High Street. The pub has obviously had a major refurbishment in its recent history. Four hand pumps are available in the bar area as you arrive. Adnams Broadside, Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and guests of Green Jack Orange Wheat Beer and Exmoor Ale. Good to see three local beers being supported when I visited. I understand all the guest beers are supplied by Crouch Vale. On the other pumps are Aspall Cider, Meantime London Stout and Helles Bier & Kaltenberg Hell. It is also good to see that even the keg lagers are unusual choices as well as being a rare outlet for Meantime. To the right of the bar on the wall are old pictures of Dedham.
To the right of the bar is a lounge area and to the rear is the popular restaurant. The toilets were particularly clean and well presented. I understand four rooms can be available for staying the night or weekend. A rather large garden area is at the back of the pub as well as a car park.

Lovely pint of Brewers Gold in the garden on a summers day, perfect. Food looked good too, about the best pub in the area and such a wonderful setting too in Constable country.

The only criticism I have of this pub is the service. It does verge on the gormless at times. You can wait for ten minutes at the bar without acknowledgement while a vacant looking young person is dithering about showing someone a menu. The staff really need to be trained to be a little more attentive and lively. Then the pub would be superb...

We've been to the sun on a regular basis. Brewer's Gold and Adnams Broadside their main beers with two further everchanging hand pumps. No complaints about qaulity - always been very good. In addition to a well executed Italian stlye menu, they offer wonderfull 'doorstop' sandwichs such as salt beef with gherkin and fresh horseradish or old spot sausage and homemade chutney. There is also an excellent ploughmans. Staff are very helpful and knowledgable. Good mix of walkers, locals and families tucking into good look food.

This pub is remarkable for it's wonderfully old-fashioned interior. A rambling old inn full of seperate rooms, nooks and cranneys, much it wood-panelled. The beer, in my experience, is generally good - a reasonably wide range of guest ales etc. The food is adventurous gastro-pub fare - not necessarily a bad thing. The staff are all quite young and varying in experience. This is my only real criticism - that the service often appears to be muddly and chaotic though mostly well-meaning. The place is generally busy, full of middle-class families enjoying their pub-grub. Worth checking out if in the area.

23.11.06 I went into the Sun at 1900 hours last night for the first time in approx.10 years. The food menu was not to my liking but I'm sure that it was acceptable to others. Too much 'green stuff'for me. The beer from the pump that I had was not well kept, looking through the glass at my fingers was akin to looking through fog.Why do bar staff (in most pubs)serve beer like this, the purchaser should not have to comment, the bar staff should be aware of what they are serving?! Atmosphere in the pub a bit depressing but I would like to think it is better with more people in it.A long time before I revisit!

An old traditional coaching in inn with a good seletion of both beer and food.

I visited The Sun for the first time today. This was for lunch. I arrived close to midday and it transpired that this was a good idea. If I had arrived, say, 45 minutes later I would not have been able to find a seat. The place was exceptionally busy. That level of popularity has to say something!
If your appetite is hell-bent upon chips and burgers then don't come here! The menu is imaginatively created around Mediterranean cuisine and has many attractive dishes.
Service is efficient, polite and unobtrusive. Wine list is comprehensive and not expensive.
Ladies loo is pleasant and inviting. Definitely, I shall visit again.

Been twice, both in high summer. The beer remains good, but the new landlord has inflicted his mediterranean gastropub food on the place. The menu wasn't heaving with choice, and and whilst the food wasn't bad, it was somehow inappropirate for what should be a quintessentially English country pub. Wonderful traditional and spacious interior. Helpful, if slightly vague staff. Garden is also very enticing.

arrived in the village, with best friends, had not booked anywhere to eat beforehand had a walk along the high st and came across the sun inn it looked like an ordinary pub. it had a sign outside saying mediteranian food, which in past experience means yuk food on entering the pub,i was greeted by a young ,lady with a nice smile booked a table for 4,had a look around the village, on arrival back ,was guided to table, the beer was out of this world, the food arrived it was fantastic, every part was cooked to perfection, sweet was also good, finished off with coffee at the bar which was fresh and superb in taste and flavour good food and value, will certainly come again. the chef deserves a medal.

What is the history of the inn, do you know if a witch was burned in the grounds of the sun inn, this is not a joke i am looking for a specific book

What a fantastic experience. Great for the oldies and the young at the same time! Scrumptious food and hydrating fine ales. Definitely worth a visit: it would be a crime not to visit if in the area. Alternatively make the detour!!

A really pleasant experience. A great meal in this newly opened pub in the middle of Constable Country. I appreciated the very good selection of wines that I was offered with my meal. Also spent some time during this hot summer in the garden sampling their super selection of beers. The pub is definitely worth a visit. (Christopher - 19/8/03)

Fantastic newly refurbished gastro pub in the heart of the village. Great mediterranean style food and one of the biggest gardens i have ever seen. No smoking section, long wine list with fizz and dessert wines. I hear they also have rooms upstairs which they are going to do up and rent out. worth a visit if you in the area, only an 45mins from london liverpool st on the train
