I used this pub for a number of years until Wetherspoons decided to pull out and on the first evening it reopened under new management I walked into the bar and was greeted with the uusual trash 'music' from loud speakers, so I turned round and walked straight out never to return.

was in here for a saturday swifty, good size crowd but very soulless. staff were not interested in anything , carried on down to the george for the rugby.

I visited this only infrequently when it was a Wetherspoons; whilst it was on the small side for a Wetherspoons it was always tolerable. No more. It's now called the Nanobyte bar although on the inside it's still very pubbish; little attempt has been made to modernise it since its Wetherspoons days; it reminded me of when the Hogshead in Islington closed and some jokers ran a pub called 'Shade' (using five of the Hogshead letters!) for a few months before it went bust. Loud, rubbish music being played to a half empty bar. Some real ale on, but my pint was served very short, and the bar staff lacked the English to understand that I wanted them to top it up (we got there in the end). Really poor.

No longer a Wetherspoons, and this is definitely not an improvement: more of a disaster.
From the time Wetherspoons opened it, until the time they dumped it and got out [WHY???], it became the meeting place and base of operations for a whole crowd of us: freelance veterans and victims of the British Film Industry. Of course it was usually dreadful on a Friday night, [that applied to the whole of the West End and still does], but between Monday and Thursday, it was OK.
Poverty and lack of work had driven us out of our older hangouts, but the Sixpence enabled us still to keep a foot in the door of Soho. We were well aware of its limitations, but we were also aware that in there a drink cost about half as much as anywhere else in the area. We used to refer to it affectionately as The Shithouse, or more politely, The Works Canteen, or The Labour Exchange. I actually did get one or two jobs while drinking in there.
Ironically, over the years, it began to take on more of the atmosphere of the old Soho we loved than our original hangouts: The George, The Ship, The Blue Posts, The Star and Garter, The Dog and Duck, etc. etc. [all decent pubs, but SO expensive now, and full of young rich arseholes]. The old farts often turned out to be very interesting people if you could overcome your prejudices long enough to talk to them. Rather amazingly, it became a real local.
It was one of the last bastions of the old Soho scene: and now it has fallen.
Ive been there a couple of times since the change, and felt very upset. None of the old crowd goes there now. Weve all tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, and been driven away. The new management seem not to have the slightest idea. The beer is rank, the service slow and rude, and theyve put in the usual imbecile loud crap piped music. The atmosphere has gone.
Heartbreaking. Dont go there.

Bloody awful place last time I went, beer was off, food was rank, service slow.

Shame as it used to be nice.

Worst Wetherspoons ever. Maybe.

It's gonnnnnnnee! Gutted. Yes, it was a crap Wetherspoon's but damnit, it was the only decent cheap boozer in Soho!

Now appears to be under new management and being redecorated.

Was forced to go to the godawful Montagu Pyke as Sam Smith pub's suck.

Anyone got ANY other suggestions for nearby? NOT Sam Smith's??

It's a Wetherspoons. It does what it says on the tin!

Nice selection of beers and at a price that is lower than any if its local rivals. The food is excellent and service is well-mannered and speedy. hours of fun trying to identify the source of the stale curry/old person smell <<points at smittys gym bag hidden under a chair, unproven but a likely suspect>>.

Doesn't have the best atmosphere in the area but if you're priority is price it's a good place to go. Cheap beer and cheap food. Usually busy but not so packed that you can't get a seat.

Easily the best place to go to for cheap drinks and food in Soho.
Yes I know you've no business even being in Soho if you're poor but if like me, you frequently are, this is the place to head to.
The meals were perfect and the staff nice (if perhaps a touch....over eager)

Definitely the best Wetherspoons and would recommend coming here if stuck in Soho with less than a ton.

This pub rocks. Good for a double vodka red bull and a chicken tikka on your dinner break. A nice chill out pub in the day and lively at night. Staff are friendly. Food is always top and comes out quick even when its buisy.

Stopped off in here for a pint during a wander around Soho. Inexpensive beer, lacking atmosphere but then it was only 11.00 a.m., just finished my beer when a horde of tourists stampeded in brandishing cameras et al.....not a bad place if you want a quick beer I reckon, better places to drink near by.

I tried this pub in June '04 and liked it a lot. It has windows/doors all around and they were open in summer. Very decent chicken curry.
I look forward to visiting next week.

If Wetherspoons pubs had music, and atmosphere, this would be a brilliant pub...Good location, and bloody cheap pint...But the lack of atmosphere really hurts it...

We had a good curry and a pint before a show. Staff friendly. Appreciated the no smoking area.

I used to work almost opposite the Moon and Six before it was a pub (think it was a Barclays bank, which had already shut down by the time I moved to Soho). It quickly became one of our locals, though it wasn't the easiest place to find a spot to stand outside during summer lunchtimes. We welcomed it for its good range of cheap real ales (about 1.25 a pint at the time), although in the evenings it got far too busy for comfort. I think the lunchtime OAP action is because it's one of the few pubs near Oxford Street and they can rest and put down their shopping. I don't remember the food being much good, but then I don't remember eating more than chips with ketchup.

We used to drink here every week but I swear there were never any chairs to be had in the whole place. So, we moved to another pub down the road.

This pub holds a special place in my heart. It was the first pub my Uni mates all met in after we'd graduated and they started to move to London.

That's about it. Hardly been in there since. Try one of the newsagents on Oxford Street instead. More life.

More than half-decent Wetherspoons boozer - not bad atmosphere, decent staff, decent prices, usually easy to get a seat. Right about it being a pensioners' club during the day, though! Just avoid the twerps going to retro clubs on Saturday nights in there...
Darryl - 18 May 2003 01:29
the toilets had no toilet paper in them
peter woodbine - [email protected] - 5 Mar 2003 12:51
The place is okay but it does seem to be a bit of a pensioners club during the afternoons. Especially on early Saturdays and Sundays.
