Visited this pub the other evening with some work colleagues before we went for a curry around the corner. What a lovely pub... we sat infront of a lovely fire in a snug bar, I sampled a fab pint of brother rabbit which was in super order. The bar staff were chatty and friendly and they had some fab looking pork pies on the bar. They allowed dogs which is always a plus with me.... the Thornbridge ales were good and overall it was a warming pub on a terrible winters night... this pub is well worth a visit. Only thing I would love is a TV so that you could watch the footy results and the horse racing on a Sat, that would make it perfect !!

If the TV channel Dave did pub makeovers this would be the result. The previous landlord of 30 years retired and the pub was bought out by Thornbridge. This meant that the interior got a much needed redecoration and the addition of a smoking area out the back. However, the interior now feels less welcoming, now painted grey and carpets banned, sheffield relevant decorations have been discarded for period pictures of the American wild west, whilst the zebra print lighting now above the snooker table is particularly. The beer is now a lot worse. You can only drink Thornbridge, which means there is very little variation to the selection and if you don't like Thornbridge... you're screwed. The new owners have taken the opportunity to massively inflate the prices also, so don't expect any change from �3 (and for most pints be prepared to dig a little deeper).

This was one of my locals when I lived in Sheffield about 450 years ago. It was a cracking little Wards pub then, and I remember the games rooms, the two mad Irish setters and the (occasional) potman with Alzheimers who supported Nottingham Forest. He was a fan of Trevor Francis but he never called him that. I guess he's collecting glasses in the sky now.

Nice friendly welcoming atmosphere, traditional layout, reasonable beer selection, never too busy, never too empty, positioned opposite another brilliant pub. Yes. This is what one would call a good pub! In addition to the excellent local micro brewery beer mentioned below, Doom Bar from Rock of Cornwall is also available if you're after something a little different to the area. On Friday and Saturday lunches the landlady cooks an amazing joint of Pork/Beef which are then sold off as sandwiches for �1.60, I dare you to find a better sandwich price and taste for that money! Always worth a visit!

Looks like this pub has improved since the last review. Would agree that the beer selection outlined there would be distinctly average in Sheffield, but on my recent visit Farmer's Blonde, Sheffield Crucible Best Bitter and Kelham Island Best Bitter were avaiable, all local microbrewery ales. Crucible Best went down well, a coppery beer despite its name.
The pub itself is an attractive stone-built suburban boozer whose frontage is deceptively small. Hanging baskets on the outside add to the charm. The pub is directly opposite The Closed Shop, good to see them both doing well.
Inside it retains an original layout despite a degree of opening up, with a snug, lounge and two games rooms (front and back). The lounge and back games room, which houses a full-size snooker table, are pretty big and the pub is very 'deep'. The front games room and snug are more manageable, the games room with a pool table and the snug a particularly pleasant room, with wall-mounted seats forming a narrow U-shape.
Despite the pub being popular with students it was mostly busy with locals on my visit, and football was being shown on TV- not Sky though.
Enjoyed it here and it looks like a much improved pub. It's definitely worth a visit with the Closed Shop and Cobden View on a West Sheffield crawl-if you can manage the hill!

The Hallamshire House is one of the few pubs in Sheffield to offer a full size snooker table (and a room big enough to play it in without cueing into walls or asking punters to move out the way). There is little else to recommend it however - the ale selection is severely limited (Deuchars & Black Sheep if memory serves) alongside standard lagers. Draws a mixed student/locals crowd, but not one of Sheffield's finest.
