Never went there that much even though it's literally 87 seconds from my house. But when I did, had a top night. The fact the Sinning Heel (two of the letters fell off the sign) has been turned into a Sainsbury's is shocking - Ealing Council hang your heads in shame. I will never use this Sainsbury's. Never. Pubs are too precious to see close down.
|
Apparently this pub is now a Sainsbury's? I spent a lot of my student drunken years ending up in this place - met a lot of irish nurses, afro carribbean dance hall belly dance stars and once had the whole place to myself with guests Five Star, Rose Royce, Evilyn 'Champagne King, The Pointer Sisters, Patti Boulaye and the sensational Boney M. A bit of a suprize the the Boney's turned up I have to say with Maizee, Liz and Marcia propping up the bar all night on the guinness while the ex pron star Bobby (lover of the Russian Queen) gambling his money away on the Space Inader and Two Ball ZX Spectrum Squash. Rain or Shine it doesn't do that in pubs and the green lino floor stood up the beat. I don't know about anyone else but those white, angelic hoodie jackets that the 'M's wore on Mary's Boy Child (the suprise, sensational SMASH hit Christmas UK Number ONE), well are they sexy or is the subject matter of the lyrics just to close to the Real Thing for comfort? The beer has never been great in here but it never stopped me getting abs. smashed and needing a cab home (If I ever knew where home was that night). a shame, a great meeting place in that part of west London that goes down as one of the all time greats for nights out thru the late 1980's and thru the 1990's. Good bye old buddy your wheel will be spun no more. Au Revoir, Adois and whatever Gaelic Irish is for goodbye. Maybe it's too late for goodbye but who brought young Julian Lennon into it!!!!!!!!!

I nearly crashed my car into the back of a bus today driving past what was the Spinning Wheel to see it is being replced by a Sainsburys's. Gutted. I had some great nights in there and am sad to see it go. Note to Mr Sainsbury's - I won't be popping in - ever.
RIP Spinning Wheel x
|
As of Wed 24 Nov 2010 The Spinner is closed to be replaced by a bloody Sainsburys, thats just what we need as theres not enough shops like that in the area !!!!
She will be missed, RIP The Spinner

Apparently, the licensing hours have NOT been cut back according to Ealing Council - and they would know.
|
Unfortunately, this pub is owned by Punch, which is the biggest leased pub operator in the country. This pub has been on the market for yonks. I was interested in it myself many months ago but the PubCo deal was too tight with a high rent and buying beer at inflated prices. I can only assume that they have not been able to get anyone to take on the lease permanently as I had an email from Punch last week saying the pub was back on the market. I still wouldn't be interested particularly if they've managed to have the licensing hours cut back. Coukld potentially be a good place if it wasn't for a greedy PubCo.
|
This pub has more than one change of ownership recently, and just last Friday I saw one of the doormen working at O'Neills. I asked him why he wasn't at the Spinner and he was saying its licensing hours had been cut back. This is sad news - does anyone know what's happened?

This bar is now under a new owner .. great guiness, maybe the best I have had in London !! ..
|
Been with friends on a friday night a couple of times now and found the staff and locals surprisingly helpful and friendly. Great music for chilling to or boogying away to, particularly with the band that comes in and plays covers. Really good too that we weren't harassed by sleezy men - everyone was nice and fun and took no to mean no., which is refreshing!!
All in all, I've had some very good nights there!!
|
Not a great place. Not too friendly and no draught ales. Decidely average.
|
New owners in here. Let's see what changes are made.

I live just down the road from the Spinner and Ive been drinking in the since before I was legal so Ive seen a lot of change in the old place. Theres nothing high brow about the place, its a good old fashioned boozer, the type of which is becoming rarer and rarer these day (not sure if thats a good or bad thing). Its a pub of regulars; even if youre not on speaking terms with everyone youll recognize half the crowd. When its quiet the bar staff are friendly and more than happy to speak to you.
The golden rules of the place revolve around the owner/publican and the manager (of sorts) and are as:
*Buy a drink - Too many people wander in to watch the match and try to get away without buying a drink and Kieran, the publican, wont have it. *Treat the place like someone else home Otherwise youll upset Shamus, the bar manager and that is not advisable. *Dont be rude or come looking for trouble Therell be no warning, youll be out on your ear and barred in a heart beat.
If you can follow that, pretty reasonable, set of rules then its the place for a relaxing drink. True both the publican and the manager are more than a little irritable but both ARE more than friendly if you show them respect and they treat regulars better than a lot of places I drink.
At the weekend its open late (1 or 2), has live music and is generally packed. Just make sure to get in there before 8 unless you want to pay to get in (which I think is a little Cheeky). Its very much like an Irish club in that you get a slightly older crowd (late 30s late 40s), everyones chatty and theres a lot of dancing. Its when the footies on that this place really comes alive. The place gets packed out if the game is on sky and theres a great atmosphere. The layout of the place is dictated by two support struts that make the place a little less than ideal for viewing the tv or the projection screen but theres loads of high seats that you can move around to a comfy spot. During the Champions League both matches will often be showing on the opposing screens due to the pubs two Sky subscriptions so youre unlikely to miss a televised match. Outside of these times, though, the place is dead. Youll still see a number of the regulars in there and if you get on with the bar staff then you might find it worth your while to pop in for a swift pint.
The selection of beers is a real late 90s Irish pub fair Fosters, Carlsburg, John Smiths, Guiness, Kronenburg, Stella and Strongbow. The bottled selection isnt much to write home about either Corona, Peroni, Becks, Magners and Bud. The draught lagers arent very good, theres a good bit of life in them but they taste like theyve been hanging around a bit. The pub is clean and tidy. Theres wood everywhere like Irish pubs up and down the country. When theres not a live band on its a mix of 80s classics which, personally, annoys me but some of my friends seem to like it (or the irony of it).
As a happening bar rubbish 4/10, as a good old pub not bad at all 8/10.

this place is a dead and souless place during the week, altho does well in weekends. Maybe if it had a decent publican, who treated his customers with a little bit of respect, which isnt asking for much considering you even have to pay to get in, then i might frequent it a bit more. hasnt been the same since it was mcgees.

an excellent pub in two ways: very good beer, cheerful staff but the publican is an oik. pity. he is thicker than the shit of two pigs but he knows how to clean pipes, this is all that really matters in a pub.
go there but don't expect an intelligent conversation. and be prepared to get barred if you try to speak to him in words of more than half a syllable.

I used to go to the Wheel every other Saturday night after watching the mighty Bees and then sinking a few in the New Inn. Until my lunchtime drink last week Id not been for about 12 years and apart from a few wall partitions being put in and glass doors at the front it is much the same as I remember.
There are 2 bars (one upstairs and one downstairs), 2 big screens and 2 plasma screens. The barman was surly and it took a lot of effort to get more than a grunt out of him.
There is a very limited lager selection and no real ale, but plenty of Guinness.
I wouldnt bother going here just for a drink, but if any sport is on Id imagine it being great. Also, if the Friday and Saturday nights are anything like they used to be they are well worth the trip.

Absoultely fabntastic
Totally unpentious and just like being at a slightly dodgy Irish wedding. People talk to you at the bar and ask you to dance, let your hair down on the dancefloor to the live band. For people who are not typical Londoners for sure. Go for it!
|
Definitely one of the best places to watch live sport in Ealing.
Also, if you can see beyond the slightly rough and ready exterior, it's a fantastic place for a fun-filled, good-humoured, cheap night out on a Friday/Saturday. If you're sick of the unwarranted pretentiousness at some of Ealing Broadway's establishments, you're prepared to have a laugh (and you can't be ar**d with the nightbus home!), you could do a lot worse.
Live music, cheap drinks, late license and a tiny Chinese guy dancing around with a pint of Guinness in his hand - what more could you want?!

A Council cattlemarket filled with leering men and tarty women Went there with "friends" last night Its the pits The band was called the sinners which was appropriate as it was a sin to let any one of them near a musical instrument. Bar staff havent a clue, Bouncer was polite though
|
Had some good nights here in the past, feel like i've outgrown it now. There used to be woman who looked like Ann Widdecombe who would always be the first dancing when a band came on, ah the memories. Midweek you can normally get a seat and is good for a quite drink. Opposite can be said fo Fri-Sat. That said my last visit was probably about 6 months ago

this landlord realy cares about his pub and his staff, and gr8 improvments have been made since I first went there. A realy freindly pub who value theyre customers. Good gigs to. get in there and check it out!

A truly awful place. The landlord is obnoxious - obsessed with money and treats his customers like low-grade cattle. There are plenty of decent pubs around, don't think that because this one has bouncers on the door that that makes it a privelege to be let in.
|
Awful! It's trashy and dirty, reminds me of a really cheap O'Neills. The kind of place to go as a last resort, even then I wouldn't put a foot back in there!
A definate NO-NO.

evertime ive been in it smells like wee
|
The Life O'Riley recently played this venue, and found it to be deceptively large, well laid out, with a friendly and efficient set of bar staff. The bouncer on the door was courteous and polite. We didnt manage to venture downstairs however what we did see of the pub was very nice and we would recommend it, with prices being about average. Allegedly busier on a weekend than it was on the Thursday when we went, but we wouldnt know about that! One last thing, the punters who were in there - Were a very friendly bunch! Would recommend it!
|
Looked like a spit and sawdust pub from the outside, but inside it's atmospheric and friendly, with great music and live bands.
A hidden gem, go there, right next to Northfields Station!
|
MUST SEE BAND. If your a Celtic fan, Irish, or up for good music, dancing and singing along to a few songs, get down there on a Saturday Night to the cavern downstairs and witness one of the best Irish bands I've seen in ages. Do a lot of the old favourites with some deeper stuff ranging from the Dubliners to the Pogues, Christy Moore and the Wolfe Tomes. The band is a trio, mandalin guitar, bodhran and vocals. The band shows strong vocals and solid guitar from Matt, slick jigs and reels from Brian on the mandalin, and a driving rhythm from Richard on the bodhran.
|
Excellent venue for a big night out. Watch out for the wee Korean fella when he starts Irsh dancing. Miss the old place
|
Have been going in the Spinner for last couple of years, best pub in the area IMHO !!!! So if you like a clean, well run bar with good bands, good beer and good company, then this is the place to choose !!!! Also has 2 big screens and 2 plasma screens for all your sports viewing needs, come on down you know you want to !!!!!
(Do I get my free Stella now Kieron ???) :-)

2 bar pub with late licence live cover bands every thursday friday and saturday live irish music every saturday in the cavern bar also big screen tv showing all live sky sports
|
I have a great time here - the pub is friendly, drink prices arent too bad - Doormen always seem well-mannered. Best thing would be the fun bands that play there and get the crowd up and dancing. would recommend.

Excellent pub - good atmosphere. Great live music.
Sean Smith - 11 Jun 2004 23:37 |
This is just such a characterful place - not the decor or enything - just the atmosphere, the jukebox, the bands (some great Irish bands, some kitsch glam. No nonesense sort of place which has an authentic feel about it - I love it.
steve - 7 May 2004 16:34 |
Good bands but has lost character by making the mistake of becoming just like any other Irish chain pub + adding unfriendly doormen.
celticangel - 26 Feb 2004 15:20 |
Lovekly since refurbishment last year plus friendly crowd of mixed ages, not at all bad fora a local!
|
Busy old place Friday and Saturday with some good covers bands.
