please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Closed down.

Gone thank goodness
|
Sign outside says To-let when it was open needed one outside saying Toilet !!!!!
|
A crap place not missed, an Aldi maybe.
|
Indeed Piss Flap, it was a disgusting place and quite rightly closed down, no sign of it coming back but no sign of anything taking over - well tescos is down the road anyway so we dont need another tescos I guess.
|
Bar Med has now been closed for a good few months, always closed when I walk past at prime time. Will it be opening as a bar again? This is the question.
|
Basic pub looks dirty from the outside, cheap drinks nothing special. How this keeps coming up as pub of the day,it makes one ask have they paid the site for it to happen (6 or so times in last month).
|
Have been in here a few times now it's allways clean with great cheap food offers and cheap drinks and also great for sports as it has multiple screens would highly recomend
|
Having recently ditched my local I decided to pop into Bar Med last week to watch the Champions League final, and unlike 1 or 2 reviewers below I wasn't at all disappointed. The place was very busy but the staff were all still friendly and the food was filling and reasonably priced. Nice to see Heineken being served at under 3.00 a pint as well. Although the place is arguably not be for the upper class six figure salary 'Chap', the atmosphere for the football was very good indeed. If you like football or reasonably priced beer/food and want a pub with a bit of atmosphere you'll love the place.
(Please note: I am not a Student, or Old, or an employee of this pub)

I recently moved to Guildford for work and wanted to see what was around town, after reading the reviews on here i decided on a couple of places to visit and some that I would not.
Last weekend some friends came down to see my new flat and we decide to go out. On our way into town from the station Bar Med was one of the first places we came too. I had been put off by the reviews but they looked as if they had recently had a refurb and so we thought we would try it out!
The food was really good; I had the lasagne and couldnt fault it! My friends had various other things including a burger, which looked really yummy! The bar staff were friendly and the place as a whole had a really good atmosphere. After we finished our food we decided to stay for a couple of drinks as the place had picked up and there was a DJ.
After this experience we will all be returning!
I guess it goes to show you have to make your own mind up and not listen to everything people post on here!
|
I like how 6 people say the place is good and 2 say it's bad and then you make a concluding statement which in everyone else's opinion is just utter poo.
StoutChappie stop criticising and try harder on your ending line. It's neither funny, cool and if anything embarrassing like all your comments. I can't believe that you have sat on your pc picking at what everyone says, opinions are different so deal with the fact that other people like a place that you don't.
I hope to never see your name again
|
He posts about pubs which are the most recently reviewed, but he's not visited. He is a person of low intellect, who doesn't get out much. He's recently discovered "C & P", so I suggest everyone ignores him, as he probably doesn't have much longer on this earth. (Apart from which, he's a gormless twat)
|
haha this has turned into an interesting read since the last time i came on this forum. StoutChappie, i dont see how you can hate this place so much that you feel you need to insult and argue with anyone who has anything half decent to say about it.
|
Thank you for further proving my point. Your comment made little to no sense.
Save your pettiness for an appropriate site

To whom it may concern (recent bloggers)
I came on this site to use if for what i believe is its actual function. I am working with an elderly relative for a month whilst my sister takes a well deserved break to New Zealand.
My sister left me with a list of things to see and do, places to eat and drink, watch the football etc. Bar Med was on that list. I came on this site to see what the place had to offer, and where exactly in Guildford it was. Intrigue led me onto the blogs and to recent conversations.
I was shocked at what I read. It seems this site is now a platform for students and adults to engage it what can only be described as a childish popularity and word play game, offering no real reviews but pathetic bias arguments and petty jibes. It seems adults have nothing more to do than boast of how they make money than actually offer pointers of how the place could be improved, how sad. Similarly students should be more proactive in working to better the place, not competing in the ridiculous slanging match present on this blog.
Finally I did go and visit the pub. After reading the pathetic reviews I felt as though I had to. The football was on. I got a comfy seat upstairs and enjoyed an open window on a hot day. I was served promptly and with a smile. I ordered a chicken salad off the menu, my food came in a reasonable amount of time and was delicious. It was a good price and the place was relatively busy with adults and students alike.
So for anyone who wants an honest review I hope this helps. Please don't waste your time keeping up with the spelling mistake argument. Its pathetic.

Dr_Pangloss
You are treating Mr Cheer like some sort of idiot! Where is your respect? Would you speak to your wife or Taunton folk like that? If your answer is yes, then I am very disappointed.
Bar Med is a fine establishment, with friendly staff and delicious meals.
Popped in for a cheeky one on a Saturday morning when I had time to kill. A nice pint of beer to be had, and as lunch time approached, it began to fill with eaters. However it just misses that certain Pzzazz. Good to have another place in town that serves decent beer.
You just got scratattacked!!
|
Hey man if I had pimples and still went to school this place would be cool. I haven`t and dont so its not for me or any other adult. Don`t worry be appy lol.

Simon Cheer. " I'm sure you will apreciate my advice". Appreciate your advice? You can't even spell.
|
StoutChappie so what is your excuse for not doing any work?
SamCM - 23 Mar 2011 11:58 |
Dr_Pangloss
'It was a filthy dump them'
Last time I checked, the following was the definition of the word them:
'Third personal plural pronoun used after a preposition or as the object of a verb; Third person singular pronoun of indeterminate or irrelevant gender; those'
I'm sure you will apreciate my advice.
Alternatively, Them were a Northern Irish band formed in Belfast in April 1964, most prominently known for the garage rock standard "Gloria" and launching singer Van Morrison's musical career. The group was marketed in the United States as part of the British Invasion.
I feel that this definition will interest you more, being a band from 1964?
Bar Med is a brilliant bar to watch football, is great value for money and has a lively atmosphere in the evening. I can't help but feel that your snobbish detrimental comments are simply a mask to your own insecurities about your age.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Cheer, a 19 year old student loving life x
|
Nothing wrong with bar med, clearly it's not classy enough for doctors or fat chaps. Thats a good thing.
|
bar* before Dr_Pangloss gets involved
|
StoutChappie good use of a dictionary by the way. But you are obviously just too annyoed that you have a dead end job to realise that we are reviewing a pub and not correc ting each other's spelling. P.s. It is Mabbott2s
|
'It was a filthy dump them and from what people are saying still is' .....Dr_Pangloss 22 Mar 2011 15:53. If we are being petty.

A desert is a landscape or region that receives an extremely low amount of precipitation, less than enough to support growth of most plants. Deserts are defined as areas with an average annual precipitation of less than 250 millimetres (10 in) per year,[1][2] or as areas where more water is lost by evapotranspiration than falls as precipitation.[3] In the Kppen climate classification system, deserts are classed as BWh (hot desert) or BWk (temperate desert). In the Thornthwaite climate classification system, deserts would be classified as arid megathermal climates
|
Mabbott2 is also too stupid to write correct English. StoutChappie is correct. about them all being the same person. He is also correct in describing them as workshy (they should at study at this time of day; they need it). As for dirty, I couldn't possibly comment.
|
GingerDobby says he goes to university too, but he is also incapable of writing a simple sentence. Could GingerDobby and the semi literate SamCM be the same person?
|
So, SamCM goes to university; or so he says. Lets hope he's not studying English. 2 - 1 deserts ? What's that then, Sahara and Kalahari perhaps? Back to junior school for you young Sam.
|
Dementer why don't you enlighten us....
SamCM - 23 Mar 2011 11:14 |
What have SamCM,GingerDobby & mabbott2s got in common ?????????????????
Anybody ?
|
I have to say I have no problem with Bar Med, the staff are always friendly, the food and drink always have great offers on and for what you pay is hearty food. During the football games it gets busy but always a good atmosphere (not this "chav infested dump").
I can't speak for a few years ago but since only moved to Guildford when coming to University. However it has saved me quite a bit of money then going to other places in town and even on campus. For example getting the deal of the week/month which hot food off the menu for 1.99 is a bargain. Then the 2-1 deserts is pretty decent as well if you want more.
I will be back and recommend you try it.
SamCM - 23 Mar 2011 10:58 |
Mabbott2s your second ad.has been noted. And people never take any notice of one pub/one hit wonders. This place is up to the standard of Bridge Street which is c/arse, 3.8/10 its well over rated.
anonymous - 22 Mar 2011 18:45 |
I am not guessing, I am making my comment based on the 3.8 rating and the vast majority of comments left over many years indicating that the place is a chav infested dump managed by a succession of incompetent fools.
|
Dr_Pangloss, if you havnt been to Guildford in years then your not in a position to be guessing what its like now. Im a student at the uni so ive only started going to Bar Med over the past year and i only have things to say about it. Im now a regular customer and they always remember my face and are always happy to see me and my friends.
|
It's mabbott2s...and I honestly am neither the owner or an employee of bar med, merely just a happy customer. Maybe u have a personal grudge with the place but I go regularly on a Wednesday and Sunday for the fun quiz with free nachos.
|
I remember this place from my time in Guildford some years ago. It was a filthy dump them and from what people are saying still is. Ignore the obvious plug by Mabbott2. Obviously the owner / member of staff
|
This place looks like a public convenience & as with anything else in this awful part of Guildford should be knocked down and rebuilt. The one thing Bridge St. does for the rest of the town it hoggs all the chav`s.
ps I hear you can eat `dirt` cheap here.
|
This is a fantastic place to go to watch the football or even have a cheeky lunch time snack. The food is cheap and their is a good range of choice. I recommend The Classic Burger which comes with a delicious salad. I also enjoy the constant offers and there are always a good bunch of people in the place. The bar staff are friendly and it is a place I intend to go to regulary. This is a great place to go before a night out as well, for example the 80s bar flares has a great crowd and fantastic music or you could go to Dusk.
In summary, this place always keeps me satisfied and I recommend to everyone to go.
|
Is even open on Bank Holiday mondays. Not a great place to sit outside as busy traffic everywhere.
|
Yesterdays England v Slovenia game (23 June) provided further evidence that Bar Med is the rough, raucous and rowdy focal point on Bridge Street for Englands 2010 World Cup games. Also expect a Surrey police van gathered conspicuously opposite between the Spoons and Flares buildings when the games are on. Im all for a vibrant and convivial atmosphere when watching England's World Cup matches, though I suspect this will change considerably for the worst in Bar Med if (when?) England are knocked out of the World Cup
|
Lets hope this goes the way of Yates down the road. Some of the worst lager i've ever sampled and i've sampled some.
|
An absolute dive.
( The whole bridge street area around the traffic lights is like the anus of guildford. But give thanks people, every town does actually need somewhere like this so the chavs don't go to the other pubs. Keep the chavs contained in their Bridge street "ghetto")
Bar Med is really just a place to drink for drinking sake. They do show football, but I'd recomend somewhere like the stoke to watch your team. Because it has a "let's get hammered" vibe the prices are all low, so if cheap vodka redbull is your tipple.........
|
This is where the chavs take their chavette girlfriends at the weekend.
|
Given Flares shall be full of ladies and gay men then I think the yobs shall come here.
On visits the beer quality is poor.
Nobody cares about the venue.
A depressing mess.
|
spent the day int his bar on the bank holiday weekend and was very suprised. Friendly staff and VERY cheap food. A group of loud "chavs" where in the corner but was calmed down by confident staff. great place
|
No thank you.
|
Apparently there was some garage music here the other night. Not exactly the sort of music to bring in a better class of crowd.
|
Not been good for years, I doubt that has changed - the people who used to go to Yates probably come here now, unless they get cheap booze from Sainsburys.
|
Hopefully it will go the direction of Yates, next door.
|
"Bar Med" . . . the name and the photo above sum it up! I was looking for somewhere to watch the footy the other day. I found "Lloyds" bar opposite, but they were only showing Sky Sports News. I asked the barman where i might be able to see the football. He was polite enough, and said:- "Well, there's 'Bar Med' opposite, but i wouldn't go in there, its crap..!! Try the George Abbott by the river bridge instead." His words, not mine!!! Don't shoot the piano player..! But I must say, I too prefer the George Abbott. 3/10 TJ
|
I should also mention that the opening times on Bar Med's website are wrong! They actually open at 5pm, not 10am!
|
I arranged a function at Bar Med for a Guildford based company. The event took place on 27th Feb 2008. I have had ENDLESS complaints today about the buffet that Bar Med put on. I paid 240 for a buffet and the 6 platters of chicken that were put out were raw. One employee comments 'the chicken had never seen the light of an oven'. After she complained to the staff, the 6 platters of chicken were taken back to the kitchen, but no substitute was provided. We paid 6 per head for a few sausages, crisps and chicken nuggets! I would advise that if you are going to hire out the upstairs for a private function, do not pay for a buffet. If you can, all go out to dinner beforehand or eat at home before you leave!! And if you are simply visiting bar med for dinner - Good Luck!
|
I came here Saturday night with my girlfriend (19 May) just before 10. No problems with the bouncers this time! There was a vibrant atmosphere here and it was fairly packed, but we were still served promptly. I cannot remember the exact prices, but I comfortably paid over 9 for a single vodka lemonade and a double southern comfort and coke, which I thought was a wee bit on the high side.
It was more lively in the upstairs section and according to my girlfriend, also less smoky here than downstairs. There was a number of other female talent on show which impressed me despite being out with the missus. If you ignore the relatively high prices of drinks, then bar med is well worth a visit on a Saturday night if in the Bridge Street area of Guildford. If single in the foreseeable future, I will certainly be visiting again searching for H-Files, ha ha!
|
I came here last night to watch the end of what was an excellent Championship play off match between Derby and Southampton (15 May). The Saints cruel defeat on penalties means I can go to their St Mary's stadium next season and watch Charlton, which is far closer to me than Derby's Pride Park ground! Easily got a comfy seat on a sofa (well it is Championship football!) in front of a plasma TV by the window. The atmosphere appeared fairly relaxed despite the key issues at stake for the numerous Saints fans watching the game.
A Magners cost me 3.40, while a pint of coke was 2.10, so make what you want from that if anything about the prices of drinks in here. The woman who served me was cheerful and efficient, while there is an impressive 6 TV screens on one floor alone. Decor is what you find in most Bar Med's in En ger landconspicuously orange.
This was the only place on Bridge Street last night showing the football, with Yates' bizarrely opting for Sky News?? Anyway, like the Guildford Hotel further up the High Street, Bar Med appears a reasonable place to watch televised football in Guildford.
|
Despite comfortably looking over the age of 21, the bouncers refused to let me in Friday night after 10ish (4 May)!? Apparently I needed my passport/driving licence to enter, despite having genuine photo ID courtesy of my englandfans official membership card! Whatever happened to bouncers using a bit of common sense (like the ones on the door at nearby Lloyds & Yates')?
|
Bar Med is Ok actually. I was sceptical though! A little further down is Bar Mambo - that's worth a try! (Especially as drinks prices have recently been slashed and the layout has changed...)
anonymous - 13 Dec 2006 13:18 |
Pretty bad place. Never liked the taste of beer here, at least its free to get in and stays open quite late so deserves 2 or 3 points for that
anonymous - 14 Nov 2006 16:15 |
Got to ask were the last two reviews by the manager of this place being that they are only 3 min`s apart and give a totally false image of this dump.Agree with the review on the 17thFeb.
|
1.50 on everything in here on wednesday nights, how can you beat that! Love this place, bit more pricey on the weekends though. Always showing all footy from sky on the projectors, this is the best football bar in guildford in my opinion.
anonymous - 6 Aug 2006 11:13 |
Food here is top notch and reasonably priced, the kitchen is also by FAR the cleanest on bridge street according to my mate who works for the surreys food standards agency. Will eat there again and again!
anonymous - 6 Aug 2006 11:10 |
Wednesday's karaoke night is brilliant! 8-11pm and the drinks are only 1.50. Loads of karaoke songs to choose from and the regulars are really nice.
anonymous - 10 Mar 2006 16:08 |
This is not a bad bar, but if you are over the age of 30 vacate the premises by 8pm on a Friday/Saturday night unless you like not being able to hear yourself think. It is an excellent football bar with screens located on both floors - the manager and deputy manager are football mad so every live televised match is screened.
|
Horrible place, I wouldn't reccommend this dump to anyone.
yorts - 17 Feb 2006 15:04 |
Dear God in Heaven this place is truly awful. Zebra patterned seats, stale flat lager, poor food and worst of all bar service and clientele that make you wish you had carried on to Yates.
|
I think people come here to try and pick up girls rather than the quality of beer. Though this place often doesnt generate much nightlife, not sure what the late license hours have done to this bar..
anonymous - 25 Dec 2005 23:31 |
Great bar, majority of staff really nice. Drink prices are what you would expect, and not too unreasonable. Its more of a "go from here to a club" at end of evening sort of place, aim to get in at 10pm ish, have a dance, couple of drinks, then move on. Karaoke on Wed evenings, not a bad night - same crowd every week, generally good place to go. Lots of lovely ladies, but still not as good a place as Edwards over the road!
|
*Euch*, Bar is the operative word here! Reasonable stop during a long night but don't entrench yourself here and certainly don't order the food. EVER!
|
Went here last monday, by far the best and cheapest night of the week, great atmosphere and lots of fit woman!!!
anonymous - 22 Sep 2004 09:58 |
Full of flap and crap karaoke singers. A winner in any man's book.
Ken - 19 Aug 2004 11:22 |
I remember this place as somewhere to go as a teenager, with your smart shoes and trousers on, in order to get all manner of alcoholic drinks spilled on them in the throng. Conversation is a no no, as you will be unable to hear anything, but the 'visuals' include other pissed up teenagers getting comically ejected by the bouncers, and what seems like hundreds of scantily clad girls hoping to net themselves a grunt for the evening. Fine evening out if you don't like talking to your friends in words of more than one syllable, and have testosterone seeping from every pore.
|
Take it for what it is - an alcopop eyecandy bar with a DJ (laaad!) on the slippery path down Bridge street to Bar Zuka/Mambo. I prefer it to Yates and Edwards later in the evening, but at that point I'm less discerning about the bogs. Just get rid of the damn toilet attendant. We don't need it.
Lots of screens for trippy music visuals and showing the sport during the day. Theres pool and table football there now too which is perhaps a sign that the formula needs to be tweaked.
Calum - 24 Apr 2004 08:51 |
Kind of a young crowd and inexperienced staff, expensive...yet always packed! Go figure?!
|
HAVE YOU BEEN HERE SINCE BOXING DAY ? NO NOR HAVE THE CLEANERS THE PLACE IS MINGING FILTH.. USED TO BE A LOVELY PLACE SOME ONE TELL US WOT HAPPEND TO IT????
CHAD - 31 Dec 2003 14:47 |
Full of teenagers and people from out of town determined to get p***ed and cause trouble, nasty fights and no decent wines. Well worth avoiding!!
OpheliaImmortal - 23 Dec 2003 14:19 |
Bar Med is f****ing excellent, it aint about nothing if it aint about bar med. I love the place to bits, the birds in med are the best in Guildford. Could quite happily spend the rest of my days there.
Rafiki - 27 Oct 2003 16:26 |
a/c is working now, bar now freezing at w/e!!
anonymous - 6 Jul 2003 18:54 |
Late night on a Friday and Saturday...no air conditioning...damn it is hot in there!
Matt Le Ross - 27 Jun 2003 10:13 |
quality pub, plus....i work there!
nick - 26 Jun 2003 11:27 |
lives up to Guildford's lively Friday night atmosphere and surprisingly a lack of pikies. Or is that the beer goggles affecting me again? ;)
Fletch - 9 Jun 2003 20:14 |
nope this pub is over 18s all the time.
Nick - 3 Jan 2003 15:19 |
Distinctly average. Expensive.
David Miller - 11 Nov 2002 21:57 |
Went to this pub one weekend with my 19 year old sister (they were checking I.D.s on the door - WAS definately over 18's then - didn't see anyone who looked over 19!!!
anon - 24 Jul 2002 13:23 |
is it over 21's all weekend ??
