Very hansom timber framed pub, lovely interior and great choices of beers on.

I have passed this place many times but finally made it in on a recent Monday afternoon. 5 hand pumps at the bar, of which 3 were available. I went for a pint of WhirlyBird (Mobberley Fine Ales) 4.0% at £3.40.

This is a pale ale, almost sweet, with a subtle taste. Quite drinkable.

Others available were Doom Bar and Cheshire Cat (Westwood Ales).

The inside of the pub is very much in keeping with what you would expect from viewing the outside of the building. Dark wood, old beams, you get the idea. The right hand side seemed to be more formal dining seating yet plenty of more informal seating to the left for sitting with a drink. Food also available on this side.

A nice pub, friendly service, good ales. One of many good pubs in Chester.

Visited on 1/2/14 on cold and wet day. Log fire and staff were very welcoming. Hobgoblin was on fine form. My wife had Thatchers Gold which is always a safe bet for a sparkling cider. Although we didn't eat on this visit, the menu looked good. We will be back on our next visit to Chester.

should read 2.80-2.90 pint - apologies for the shoddy maths...

Wadworth 6X, Courage and Marstons when we visited - nice boozer, big and historic interior - darts being played - well worth a visit. 17ish for 6 pints of ale which equates to around 1.80-1.90 pint - good price for Chester. We paid 3.65 per pint in the 'Piscine' Ship Inn earlier...

lovely beautiful exterior and interior but sadly i believe is marstons owned now hence only Jennings cumberland ale and caledonian deuchars ipa on,the pub was fairly quiet for a Tues evening however so was much of chester,my pint of deuchars was ok(3.10) but nothing amazing,8/10 mainly scored for the building

Wife and I had lunch here today.
Ham, egg & chips, ham and cheese sandwich, pint of Cumberland Ale, pepsi came to just under 18.
Food was fine. Ham was hand carved not supermarket slices.
Pub was half full. Mainly tourists. Some Americans.
The other ale available was Hobgoblin.

Had a couple of good pints of Black Sheep here. The pub in general endeared itself to me and my pal and not least by ahving a sign on the door saying essentially 'no chavs'.

Very attractive pub with a classic tudor exterior in the city centre. the interior is heavily beamed and retains some original features, such as a fireplace and te windows, as noted. Concessions have been made to modernity, such as the small television and the leather sofa-style seating ,but these are the exception and are unobtrusive- they do not spoil the pleasant atmosphere. Popped in this week on an early evening for some food, which represented good value at about 6-8 for most main dishes and went down quite well. Unadventurous/Safe range of ales- Black Sheep, Bombardier and Theakstons'. Tried the first two and they were very well kept. Service friendly and prompt, although the staff had very little to do- the pub was very quiet when I entered, although more people began to trickle in during my stay. I get the impression that this place is suffering from the downtown as it is a fine all-round pub, but nothing in particular stands out in a place such as Chester- perhaps a wider range of beers? I would certianly return again however and would recommend it if you're in Chester.

first impression :
This attractive old pub, dating originally back to around the 1600s, is situated in the lower part of town.
***
Outside, it has the typical black timbered tudor style of many buildings in Chester. There are two front entrances. one into the bar and the other into another room that now seems to be used for dining and private hire.
I understand the "renaissance" restaurant is upstairs.
***
Inside, a small door leads into a low ceiling, beamed room. There is a mix of couch and table seating, an open coal fire with authentic firelace, and leaded windows. The central bar serves the pub and restaurant. Downstairs seating guesstimate at around 60-80.
***
it was a quiet sunday, and the restaurant was closed on our visit.
3 cask ales "should" have been on offer, but all were off on our visit.
I got the last pint of theakstons black sheep!
***
verdict:
the character of the building has been preserved, although the room was very smokey with the fire on, and the place had a feel of neglect. Two couples came in but left immediately.
great on the outside, but neglected on the inside.
only a 5 from me.
