Excellent sister pub to Old Poets Corner. Quieter, which makes for a different but equally good drinking atmosphere. Choice of own Ashover Brewery beers or guests with food available at usual times. Another reason for a return visit to Derbyshire I feel.

Another member of the over-rated real ale pubs though not a bad effort but beer often excessively cold.

An excellent pub, with a good atmosphere.
Welcoming if you are on your own (sit at the bar and you will be involved in a conversation in a short time)
Kids are not allowed in the main bar areas (extra points for that), though they are allowed in the room behind the bar (avoid if you can)
Beers change regularly and there are usually at least a couple of dark ales, milds or porters
Regular live music at weekends
A popular and friendly pub
Well behaved dogs are welcomed

A hidden gem. I regularly call in here on the way home from work for a pint of draught Erdinger. Top quality stuff. Lots of great English ales in great condition as well. Very nice decor, comfy seats and friendly staff.

I called in here today, after wanting to visit for quite a while. It was runner up in the county pub of the year award 2009, just being beaten by the Old Oak at Horsley Woodhouse (fair enough, it IS good). It certainly is a real ale drinkers paradise, though contrary to what the last reviewer said, there is now some nitro-keg. Probably recently added to boost sales. The porter I tried was among some of the very best I've ever had! I didn't try the food but it looked reasonably priced. If I lived nearer I'd be there on a regular basis.

Previously known as the New Clock, and before that the Red Admiral, after a period of being closed and boarded up, it reopened about a year ago by the Ashover Brewery as the Poet & Castle.
With a choice from 8 hand pumps it is now a real ale drinker�s paradise. Two mainstream ales, Landlord and Everard�s Original seem to be regulars as are Ashover�s own Castle Light and Poet�s Tipple. Normally at least one of the guests is dark beer and several draught ciders are available too.
There are no TVs, no jukeboxes, no pool tables, and better yet, no nitro-keg gnat piss. It is a pub for the serious drinker but there is live music in the evening once or twice a week. I haven�t eaten here yet, but if the food is as good as the beer, it will be pretty good.
