This really is a lovely, classical back street pub. Has the feel of a real local pub with a somewhat terse who are you and what do you want type of Landlord. Nonetheless, its a place you could be happily happily enconsed over the course of an afternoon.

Locals pub in a Grantham side street that has 2 rooms and a few local characters dancing along to tunes they were playing on the jukebox. Ales were Sharps Doom Bar & Newby Wyke Bear Island. Clearly an old pub and whilst searching for local accommodation, I noted that they offer fairly cheap rooms. I just wasn't quite quick enough to book.

Sorry to spoil the fun but on a lunchtime visit I found it near empty, gloomy and uninviting. The only guy serving was sitting front of bar reading the paper and clearly found it an unwelcome chore to have to go behind the bar to pour a pint. That said, the result - the Bear Island lauded below - was excellent and good value at 2.80. Maybe I just hit the wrong time but it will be a while before I give it the benefit of the doubt and try again.

Superb pub, visited recently on a very quiet Friday night. One real ale on, Newby Wyke Bear Island. This pub deserves more support from the folk of Grantham methinks

I had a very quick pint (of Newby Wyke) in here between trains yesterday and it certainly is a real gem, Granthams oldest building I beleive, and the living sign, a real beehive with real bees is still there too, beer was fine, I think there were about 4 on. I would certainly head here next time for a pint. Worth searching out.

I'm utterly amazed that no-one's posted about this one yet! It's an absolute gem ... at least it was when I last visited a couple-or-three years ago. Small, cosy, tucked away, real ale and (I thought!) a world-famous "Living Sign" - the real, occupied beehive in the tree outside. I remember my grandmother telling me she'd spotted this c 1900: delighted it's strill there!
