user reviews of the Red Lion, Weymouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

i would rate the pub higher if the bar staff seemed a bit more interested and the barman with the beard didn't have a "come and have a go if you think your hard enough" attitude to all the male customers who ordered drinks.Go and work in a pub in South London if you think your so tough mate.

Great location and good food and beer. Otter Lifeboat very nice session ale.The steak & ale pie was excellent. Only criticism is that they consistently serve short pints and it gets very boring to have to ask them to top up the glasses every time. It gets a lower rating because of this.

The Red Lion is tucked away in the square opposite Brewer's Quay and a short walk from the harbour. This is a fairly small pub that is clearly quite popular. There were no tables available on my Saturday evening visit. Ales were Sharps Doom Bar, Dorset Brewing Company Jurassic & Red Lion Bitter, Otter Lifeboat Ale & St Austell Tribute. Note there is a guest real cider at the rear of the bar, which was Old Rosie on this occasion. Note the excellent selection of rums among the spirits. Friendly place.

Ok, so you cant take your dog inside, but i didnt have a problem sitting outside eating my dinner as it was a lovely evening. The staff were polite and friendly enough towards me and the real ale was very nice. The place was packed, which is more than can be said for the other restaurants around the square at Brewers Quay

I can only concur with previous postings...went to get a pint while the 'better half' browsed in Quay.Only the surly landlord eating lunch. No other customers...'No dogs in 'ere' bellowed the Irish brouge over his lunch.Sorry mate! Only wanted a pint outside but in that case I'll move on!

scotty2007 has posted on BITE only three times, all three posts concern the Red Lion which he praises to the hilt and virtually no other poster has a good word to say about the place, he is the manager or a paid stooge, the consensus is clear that this pub has rude and unpleasant manager and is poorly rated. How childish and obvious can you get! I recently looked in the door on a nice sunny day and the place was empty, the public have voted with their feet.

We didn't go here on the first night of our three night stay in Weymouth because of the poor reviews here............BIG mistake.
Visited on Tuesday 24th Sept and just loved the place, a proper pub with a great range of 5 different beers, even selling one Hopback one, Redsell's EKG for £2-50.
The food was also lovely and the bar-staff VERY friendly, just goes to show that you should really take the comments on this site with a pinch of salt and try the pubs for yourself (trust me though, this is a good pub).

The manager is one of the rudest men in Weymouth. He pays his bar staff very poorly if at all sometimes and the kitchen is disgusting....I have been in there........the chef is doing his best to produce good food but is constantly scuppered by the management. Last week the main fridge went down and was found to be above the recommended temperature by a large margin.... and the boss (Brian) told the Chef to serve the crab that was in it to the cutomers and an Audible argument between chef and boss was heard. This pub should come with a health warning. The rest of the staff including the deputy management are actually good people trying to work in a bad situation...that which is brought about by the brutish boss Brian. If you are going to go to any pub in weymouth make sure its not this one.

As a regular visitor to this pub i know for a fact it has nothing to do with Punch. I have also been told the reason it is not listed in the Good Beer Guide is due to the fact the local Camra guy is not allowed to bring his dog in.....how petty is that?? I'm thinking the previous poster is that same person. I find it strange that The Good Pub Guide list this pub as the only highly recommended pub in Weymouth and GBG have no mention whatsoever but they do list every Wetherspoons in the country. You wouldn't have to dig too deep to see where their priorities lie...........

Just to correct Scotty2007, this is NOT a Free House despite the claim Free Trade (what on earth does that mean anyway) on the pub sign. Before the refurb it used to claim to be a Free House. It is actually one of five pubs run by a small pub company based in Cheshire called Cheshire cat Pubs & Bars Ltd. They don't even own the pub but lease it from the giant pub chain Punch. However this pub has always been economical with the truth - it claimed to be Weymouth's favourite pub back in 2009 before it was even re-opened.

just spent the weekend in weymouth for the seafood festival and the saturday was cancelled due to the monsoon. so instead i spent an excellent afternoon in this transformed pub. what a difference the refurbishment has given it....its so cool i could have been in london or manchester. it was packed with rain soaked visitors but everyone seemed more upbeat with the comfort and selection of beers and spirits on offer...the food was excellent too. just brilliant!! Slerpy i reckon you drank too much beer in the other pubs which gave you double vision....its not a managed house as the free trade sign outside would indicate.

Exceptionally POOR Manager and partner, they have no manners or service skills whatsoever.I hope their Area Manager reads this and takes action. I will contact the Pubco involved seeking an explanation. Are they secretly filmimg something akin to Fawlty Towers here??? Still a big fat Zero. The visitor centre opposite is closed and trade is poor, the little trade they might get is destroyed by the aforementioned morons, most strange indeed.
slerpy - 7 Jul 2012 21:59
The bar staff were rude and unwelcoming, the food and drinks were foul and apparently watered down greatly and some of the comments made to me and my friends about my age and sexuality were frankly disgusting. These comments were made by the MANAGER! I was told he didn't want any of "My kind" in his pub. I am disgusted and will never even think again about this pub, even if I was dying Of thirst/hunger.

I'd tend to agree with the post from mcroyal - I certainly didn't feel "welcomed" by the bar staff although the service was reasonably prompt.

5 beers on - Ringwood, Jurassic, Doombar, Summer Lightening and a n other. The first pint of Jurassic, 2.95, was excellent the second not so good - probably getting towards the end.

Pub extremely hot and stuffy, Despite it being a hot day, non of the umberellas were up outside - not all of us like sitting in the sun - although they covered less than half the tables.
cheshirecat - 25 May 2012 09:15
Outstanding on all fronts. This was helped by a beautiful day so we sat outside. Beer, especially the Jurassic Ale was superb. Food excellent, the Dorset bap prawn roll was lovely. Staff efficient, food quality excellent. The place was busy, altogether we stayed longer than we should and were a bit wobbly when we left.

Situated in Hope Square and right opposite the old Devenish Brewery this pub has a nice aspect with seating outside at the front it was a very pleasant to be on a warm sunny afternoon. My pint of Jurassic Ale was a tadge warm but still acceptable with Butcombe Bitter and Hop Back Summer Lightning also available (plus a couple of standard brews). I would agree that the service lacked sparkle and enthusiasm and we got our drinks efficently enough but without any passion or commitment to customer service (I hate it when a barman stands and just stares at you, waiting for you to say the first words! He/she should welcome the customer into the pub and help them with their selection of drinks and food - this pub failed miserably on that score). "Could try harder" would be my school report!
mcroyal - 10 Aug 2011 10:49
The barman was about as unwelcoming as it is possible to be. The pub itself is clean, the beer was reasonably good, the food was advertised on a silly pretentious menu. Pubs in Weymouth are closing fast unless the ambience/chip on shoulder attitude changes then this will become another closure. 5/10but reduced to zero for the silly attitude.
slerpy - 24 Jul 2011 16:07
A visit mid afternoon found the pub nearly totally bereft of customers. Barman - landlord? - not exactly pleased to see us which is a surprise thinking that he probably needs the custom. Five ales on including a grudgingly served superb pint of Jurassic from nearby Dorset Brewing Company. Also tried the Red Lion ale which was also good and Skinner's Betty Stogs. Tastefully done out with lots of wood and maritime paraphernalia. Mrs Dandillus (senior version) said it the place could have done with a good dust, but she also says that when she visits us so nothing to worry too much about there. All in all, a very nice pub with excellent ales. A quick course in good customer service and could be even better.
Dandillus - 16 Oct 2010 17:39
We sat outside - I've never seen so many dogs outside a pub - and my dear wife immediately put her sleeve in some bird poo, which didn't endear her to the place, what with that and the 'dirty' toilet. I couldn't care less: It is a traditional boozer selling good ale. I had the Cotleigh's, which was nice.
HornchurchJohn - 25 Jul 2010 21:11
vast improvement over my visit at this time last year. several real ales on sale mostly local. I went fo JURASSIC Bitter which was mid strength and at first had a strange taste. but quickly got used to it and it was really quite pleasant. This pub is in Brewer Quay which is a cobbled area and a sun trap. Very popular and difficult to get a seat outside if the sun is out.
Bitter_Man - 11 Apr 2010 00:11
wow, can't believe the change in this pub.came down last winter and it was dank and bare......my god what a back bar they have now.....its like they have every rum and whiskey under the sun....great selection of ales too.best bar in weymouth by a country mile
scotty2007 - 12 Jan 2010 16:20
I enjoyed this pub and sat out and ate on two occaisons which were both good - fish cakes. Can't remember the beer but is was good! Staff friendly
blatters2001 - 18 Sep 2009 16:33
I found the staff friendly and the beer was pretty good I has a crqacking crab roll one lunch time too.
gingerob - 17 May 2009 17:09
In need of decoration outside (scafolding put up after easter) the main attraction of this pub is location and large seating area outside. It is in the Brewers Quay areay wich is traffic free. Had a nice pint of Greene King IPA for 2.35 and a Pint of Adnams Broadside which was a bit stronger at 4.7%. so tried a Weymouth brew called JD which I am afraid I was not keen on. As superseagulls mentioned the place can be full of Kids and pushchairs. Ther are better pubs in the area such as The George Inn (just across the water) and The Nothe Tavern up the hill a bit.
Bitter_Man - 19 Apr 2009 00:10
If you like kids running around the place while your trying to have a drink/meal then this is the place for you.
Rubbish pub.
superseagulls - 1 Apr 2009 18:10
Can't believe this pub has more comments. A very welcoming house serving a good range of local and not so local brews. A fantastic venue for a warm summers evening sat outside supping good beer served by friendly staff. Have visited the Lion during my visits to Weymouth for many years and can say I have never had a bad pint.
Dave_at_home - 24 Mar 2009 20:08
Excellent pub with excellent ales and a warm welcome. The pub stands opposite the old brewery which is now Brewers Quay (where the welcome isn't as warm, or the beers as well-kept). I had a pint each of the Bombardier, FortyNiner, JD1742 and Chesil - all of which were top notch. The food was good value with decent portions and reasonably priced, although the menu consists of ordinary pub grub and could do with a bit of inspiration.
