After a visit to nearby Breen, I arrived back in civilisation at the Crossways Inn in Highbridge. I see it has been voted Somerset CAMRA pub of the year for the second year running and it was certainly my favourite of 10 sampled in the county. There are 2 or 3 brightly-lit rooms with a good selection of ales and ciders. Some were possibly left over from a beer festival held over the August bank holiday weekend. Ales were Black Flag White Cross IPA & Naughty Pilchard, Maxim Double Maxim, Franklin''s Resurrection, Pitchfork PG Steam & Butcombe Gold. Ciders were Cornish Orchards Pear Cider, Black Rat Cider, Lyme Bay Eventide, Rich''s Medium Dry & Orchard Pig Explorer. CAMRA discounts are offered on both halves and pints of both ale and cider. There is a large car park on the opposite side of the road.

Best pub for miles. Had a magnificent sunday lunch washed down by Cheddar Ales Potholer last weekend.
Head and shoulders better than any pub in Burnham.
I'm not a local, but have visited this pub a couple of times a year for many years. Always good ale and good food.

Travelling back from Devon to Bristol we pulled off the M5 at Bridgewater and decided to travel up the A38 instead to find a pub for lunch. The first decent looking pub we spotted (and the last!) was the Crossways, with its Camra Pub of the Year sign luring us in.
Sadly only had time for 1 beer, and had a very nice pint from the Box Steam Brewery - there seemed to be a really good range on, but sadly had to hit the road. Also enoyed a nice steak, with obviously home made onion rings. Very tasty, and friendly service.
Will definitely be back next time I pass this way.

An absolutely amazing beer festival this weekend - beers from all over the country. Looking forward to next August Bank Holiday already !

Had a couple of pints of the real ales in fine fettle.. comfy atmosphere and. plenty of diners. Didn't eat but seemed ok from what i could see...
will go back and give it full try later

This pub is an example to all other local licensees, and is the yardstick by which I judge other pubs by. An impressive range of beers sold honestly - if the bar staff don't think a beer is quite ready, or is slightly 'spoilt' they will tell you and offer an alternative. The refurbishment has been outstanding, the food is excellent......what more can I say

Have been around a few pubs good and bad(1 used to be in the top ten on here). And I have very rigid views as to what makes a good pub!! I dont know what is wrong with people...only rating this pub 6.2!! Excellent and friendly service! Enthusiastic, knowledgable landlord who is always prepared to listen to ideas. Somehow has managed to cater for all tastes(and I hate familly/foodified pubs!!) Super range of everchanging real ales(mainly West Country) kept excellently! There are so many pubs that could take a leaf out of their book.......well done.....keep it up!!!!!!!!!

Well deserved Good Beer Guide entry, (although for us it was Beer In the Afternoon), a few excellent pints of Exmoor Ales Stag. Plan to return asap.

Had a very pleasant lunchtime there. Good choice of ciders and the sandwiches were unbelievable! Huge and came on a plate of salad and crisps as well.
Good buzz at the bar of locals having a good time.
From local in-laws, I understand this place was once great, then went a bit rubbish. Now seems to be firing on all cylinders once again. Nice one!

This pub has gone through quite a few changes in recent years and the new owners have really now made it a true Gem. A major refurb has really enhanced the character of this 16th century coaching inn. A new kitchen and new plush toilets (with piped music) and shortly a number of newly built B&B rooms will complete the transformation.The food quality has gone up several notches and now the place is crowded with people throughout the week, who come back regularly. Highly recommended

To be perfectly honest, I'm not one for posting on these sites, but reading some of the reviews on here, i felt I needed to... I've recently come back from a holiday in Somerset and stayed for a week quite close to this pub with my wife and young child (and our dog), plus some friends and their young kids... and quite frankly i could not speak more highly of this pub... all the staff were really friendly and could not do enough for us (for example they had "activity packs" for the kids) - plus it was a bonus that we could take our dog in... Also had a sunken tramploine in the garden for the kids as well as a climbing frame/playhouse... and as for the beer, our friends are members of CAMRA and there we 6 hand-pull beers on which went down VERY well, and 4 ciders on tap (some of which were local ones) which also went down well. Also had 3 meals there in the week and all the meals were spot on (from a fixed menu as well as a specials board). So for me, my wife, my daughter and my dog we would defo give this pub a 10 out of 10 (and talking to the friends who came with us, they would say the same!!).

Went here about 18 months ago and as reviewers said it was not good. However went again a couple of weeks ago (part of the Somerset CAMRA pub trail). New very enthusiatic landlord - excellent real ales (couldn't have much because I was driving!). Will go back!

Very good pint of Glastonbury Ales "Escalibur" was quaffed here last week. Nice log fire and friendly service too from this good beer guide pub, 7.5/10

In previous years, I would have doubted the review from "iain40" but this is a pub that seems to have declined. I've been using it for 20 years as a place to eat when working locally and under its long-serving landlord of the 1990s and later, the beer was good and varied and the meals were varied if basic. Under new management/ownership, it felt as though all aspects were being left to slide. Although the beer quality was still OK, the food was mass-produced, formulaic and boring. Not too late to save this pub, but certainly not the reliable place it ince was.

Dark, dismal, badly kept (very cloudy) ale. 'Nuff said.
