user reviews of the Last Post, Southend on Sea

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The choice of real ales is the poorest that I've seen in a Wetherspoons.....and the ones that were on were not kept well...I had to return mine as it was undrinkable. The replacent beer (a hard choice as there was not much to choose from) was just about OK, so drank that and went elsewhere.
The food choices were also the poorest that I've seen in a Wetherspoons as well.
Won't be paying a return visit....although it is handy if you need a wee before catching a train, as it's right outside Southend Central.
Perry - 29 Jun 2017 11:21
A large pub with entrances on 2 streets and therefore 2 bars. Although there was plenty of handpumps, the choice of real ales was poor. There was too many ciders and the regular beers taking up pumps and their choice of beer was odd. Strange tasting summer style beers. The beer and the whole pub could have been cooler. Although the weather was very warm when I was there, the other pubs in Southend were coping better. Badly needs air conditioning and coolers on the hand pump beers. There was plenty of seating with a conservatory and a patio area. The food was OK but my soup arrived lukewarm and the baguette too hot to handle.
boozers_knows - 7 Sep 2016 14:04
After this mornings torrential downpour staff closed the shorter bar and seating area off because of flooding. A large puddle was forming on the carpet.
The main bar was fine although the real ale choice was now restricted. The uninspiring house regulars were available but only one guest ale - and four 'available soon' - if you waited.
Tables were cleared of plates but not wiped clean.
Staff friendly as ever.
fugglehops - 24 Aug 2013 22:10
Just fine; one shorter bar at the main entrance opposite Southend Central and another longer bar towards the back. All the usual beers on with a couple of decent guests; sunlight was streaming down through the glass around the middle of the pub on our visit yesterday which gave it a more pleasant feel (even if it meant it was a little sticky).
plymouthpirate - 4 Aug 2013 15:46
This is the kind of place which you either love or you hate. It's a cavernous place with a bar on either side of a large central area. It gets very busy, particularly on weekend evenings as, being right in the centre of town and cheap, it is an ideal place for youngsters to drink before going on to one of the nearby clubs. Such is the size of the place that you need not let them bother you.

You are guaranteed two things with every Spoons, good drink selection and good prices, which is why I come here when I am meeting friends in Southend, coupled with the fact there's really not that many other decent pubs in Southend town centre.

It does show football, which is unusual, so it can get busy at these times too.
eastangliantour - 30 Apr 2013 15:46
Staff were certainly polite but was one of longest waits I've had in a Spoons, not helped by goos weather and football on TV (first for a Spoons too).

The Greene King special was being pulled regularly so I had that that rather than the other offerings from the Festival range, and it was very good, as indeed is most of the real ale I have in Essex - a great drinking county.
mtaylor40 - 24 Mar 2012 18:46
Use this place quite regularly and it appears the current management have things under control now,bar service has improved and staff are polite and friendly ,although sometimes in the evenings the place is busy and a wait to be served has to anticipated.Has won SE Essex CAMRA best improved pub award this year.Held an excellent beer festival recently ,all ales in good shape.I have visited many "Spoons" pubs around the country and would recommend this one .
aquickpint - 27 Oct 2011 16:44
Called in here on a summer Sunday evening and it was doing good business. Excellent beer selection and surprisingly friendly service, considering some of the customers appeared a little far gone. I can't remember what ale it was I had but it tasted good.
beermann - 12 Jul 2011 15:02
Thursday lunchtime and pretty busy. Lots of middle aged (unemployed?) male customers and old peeps like us. The beer was fine although the barmaid seemed to be expecting a cold and kept rubbing her nose. Tomato & Basil soupe was fine. As usual, cheap and cheerful.
Paul_Rochdale - 5 Nov 2010 20:52
I went in here I found it very over crowded especially for a Mid weekday afternoon it was full of Kids & every Table was full of Dirty Glasses Plates & crocks being a school holiday. I waited at the Bar well over 10 Minuets trying too get served but gave up in the end and walked out. There was a big lack of Staff behind the Bar or in the Pub. I may have Picked a bad day and Staff were off sick or Etc. I will go in next time I'm Passing as I have been here before and it was OK.

Alesonly - 3 Nov 2010 20:43
Monday 6th September 2010 was the (unadvertised) 'Serve the students first' night. After 15 minutes we gave up despite seeing everybody around us get served, the barmaid keeping us in her gaze and serving more recently arrived students. We took the hint from the bloke next to us and walked out. He was over 30 as well. I have worked in a busy pub myself, there was no excuse for this blatent favoritism. Dont worry, we live 280 miles away so wont be back.
markh737 - 18 Sep 2010 21:36
Normally come in here about once a year. It is large enough to find a table, the bar is usually busy, but the food arrives fairly quickly. However, on my latest visit there were no vacant tables this Saturday lunchtime.
Some six-seater tables only had the one tipsy occupant. Tell a lie there was one vacant table. When I say vacant I mean it was unoccupied by humans, but was occupied by lots of part-empty glasses, plates, menus, drink spillage but surprisingly little food droppings. These were saved for underneath the table. The crap on the floor could keep a family fed for a week.
What sort of people leaves a table in that state and why do staff leave it like that? Mind you, if I worked there I think I would ignore it as well.
The whole place looked a shit-hole. Has anything changed here to cause that in the last couple of years?
fugglehops - 2 Sep 2010 21:40
at best the last post is a great way to start your night out if your on a budget! the prices are very low! as it is located in the center of southend high sreet you would expect a lively upbeat atmosphere. but no! there is no music and as a large boozer its hard to feel a freindly vibe! the sevice (altho friendly) is very slow! no pool table, no juke box, and only two tv's which never have volume due to the lack of ad licienceing i was told. (wich is why the prices are low i was told by a regular) familys are welcome and the food menu is great. a large selection of ales/ lagers/ ciders/ and spirits. i would, however, only visit the last post as a means to start the evening off and then promptly move on after about an hour. my rating for this venue is based soley on the price of there drinks!
fletch77 - 20 Jul 2010 17:18
Walked in, walked out. Typical Wetherspoons- dark noisy, grimy.
stymaster - 1 Aug 2009 21:55
The previous post to this sounds like a pretty bad experience but not completely atypical. As with a lot of Wetherspoons, this place can get a bit grubby at times - clearing and cleaning tables often seems to be an issue. Shame though, as I've still not found a better pint of real ale in Southend and the value of drinks and food can't be argued against.
aroundthefur - 10 May 2009 00:14
You have to fight your way through hordes of dirty old chain smokers before you even get through the door. AFTER the refurb, the toilet seats were falling off, there are limited lights in the toilets and some of the doors don't lock. 8 of us ordered food, including 6 veggie meals. When they finally arrived, 2 were cold and 2 had meat products on the plate. The used nappy in the booth next to us was a bit of a shock and when we tried to complain we were told the manager "wasn't available". I went back the next day to see if he was there and the nappy was still under the table. It is full of old men who barely seem to be alive or hordes of chavvy mothers with screaming kids (and I mean SCREAMING!!!!). Our favourite was the 3 year old girl with an "I'm Hot and I Know It" t-shirt who projectile vomited what looked like radioactive soup all over the table opposite ours. On the plus side there are 2 exits so no matter which way you turn from the bar, you can make a hasty escape.
kaytaylor - 21 Nov 2008 21:19
An awful pub full of unpleasant people, with poor service from the staff.

Sadly, it's the last place in Southend to get a real ale.
AshingdonMan - 23 Aug 2008 17:14
I don't think I can ever go back in here, having stormed out in a huge strop after being told I'd have to wait an hour for food.

How the hell can it take an hour to get something out of the chiller cabinet and stick it in the oven?
Royed - 8 Jul 2008 10:15
One of the more interesting Wetherspoons housed in,as the name suggests, the old Post Office. I am assuming that as the the pub has entrances in 2 streets, it has been extended thorugh a couple of other buiuldings as well. There are 2 bars, the main bar has a loungey area near the main door with a few bookcases and a bit of a living room feel to it. The main body of the pub in the centre has high ceilings, a few snugs and a predominantly orange colour scheme that is perhaps not as awful as it sounds. An old mail bike sits in the rafters and there are various post office artfacts as well as local historical snippets and a few silent plasma screens dotted about. Down one side is a conservatory section with some ornate ironwork over the doorways. The second bar is smaller but probably more interesting with a large vaulted roof, cosy snugs, dimmer lighting and acres of bookcases giving it the feel of a library. A larger than average selection of guest Ales is available at the main bar whereas the smaller bar tends to stick to the more mainstream Ales. Food service can be a bit slow at peak times although they do advise you when ordering how long you can expect to wait. It can also take some time for tables to be cleared. Unfortunately, Wetherspoons + Southend daytrippers is not usually a good combination so you may need to be prepared in advance for a few uncsavoury characters if you go at peak times.
RogerB - 30 Jun 2008 13:54
Was in here today during lunch time with the wife seemed a very good run Wetherspoons. Food was of good quality for the Price Paid as long as you don't expect A five star restaurant Quality Meal at this cheap price. The Three guest Ales I tried were all in very good condition. Will definitely go in here next time I'm in the Southend area In the early evening if possible maybe on a mini Pub crawl.
Alesonly - 17 Jun 2008 22:12
I just have to comment on this hell hole. It used to be 'ok' but I went with a friend for lunch for old times sake and it was just awful. We waited 40 mins for our vegtable dishes only to be then told they didn't have any veg and then waited a further hour for our second choices. There were 11 glasses on our table and argos flyers stuck fast to the stickyness.

Don't go, it's for old drunks during the day and young tarts at night.

Trom - 27 Feb 2008 16:20
Right, first thing, drink prices. Its a wetherspoons so you know the score there, great prices. The pub itself is nice, long and spacious and the bar staff are quite good. Whether you're heading to the clubs after or just having a night down the pub, its a great place to drink.
Spartakoos - 27 Aug 2007 11:09
was in for the airshow , my usual starting pub and finishing , sunday , around 1300 not too packed , so got served a nice pint quick n easily , went back a few hours later with a few people , we ordered a bottle of magners , amaretto n coke and a pint of speckled hen which we was told was off , so had a marstons instead which was very nice indeed , next round my mate asked if the speckled was back on ? was told its never been off .....
ended up staying here till it got too busy with the clubbers going out , all in all not a bad pub with good staff , just made me wonder bout the speckled .
romfordir - 29 May 2007 12:33
Very nice spoons, I especially liked the fact that the non-smoking area had it's own bar, toilet and exit, meaning you could go in have a few pints and not have to worry about breathing in second hand smoke. the staff were also nice and friendly.
anonymous - 3 Mar 2007 11:55
Good pint of Festive Firkin on 23rd December, helped along by an excellent Angus pie with chips broccoli and carrots. I was particularly taken by the quality of the pastry, which was firm yet tender - also it made a BIG difference serving the gravy separately so the eater can dispense to taste. Well done. It is rare that I find myself in a position to rate a Wetherspoon so highly, but when it's deserved it would be wrong not to.

Over the last few years this pub has served as the food stop whenever I am doing the "Southend Crawl". The Last Post has been consistent pretty well throughout.

lad_newton - 26 Dec 2006 02:19
The best cheap entertainment available in Southend on a Saturday night is to get yourself a table in the centre of the pub, get a round of drinks in and wait.

The place fills up with people wanting to get tanked up before heading to the clubs. No violence, no disorder, but just purly Hilarious. God Bless the bar staff for putting up with them.

Come 10.15, the place is emptying, your sides are aching through 2 hours of laughter & you can just about aford a plate of chips, Guinness & large Jim Beam.

Top value night out.

I'm the sad old bloke in the corner laughing...
Scoggy - 6 Dec 2006 01:05
i will say my visit was on the airshow weekend and being the first pub outside the station it was packed so i expected a wait , but i waited around 4 minutes for a pint , which wasnt bad , was packed to the rafters , but the staff (including the bouncers) were friendly and the beer was brilliant , i have used this place a few times and never have had a bad show in here , and some words to anon who works there , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
romfordir - 10 Jun 2006 18:04
Must give credit where credit is due.Went in there today and they had a beer tent out the back with about 10 beers on.Also there were 12 beers on in the bar.All that i tried were in first class condition. This is for the jd beer festival that ends on Sunday.Ok,i know that it cant be like this all the time but if there was an improvement in this direction the real ale drinkers of southend might have a chance.Yes,will at least give them 10/10 for a very good effort.
apa - 16 May 2006 19:16
I'm sorry but some of the reviews below are just plain wrong, although i am biassed as I do work here! No guest beers? thats ridiculous this pub has 12 ale pumps plus they normally have 3 or 4 more beers in the cellar behind the bar. "Frequently runs out of real ale, especially when I'm there to drink it. The staff don't know how to change a barrel even if they had one to change. Useless" Well thats just untrue and they are properly served and cleaned, im the mug that does it all the time! So to say it runs out of real ale is absolute garbage! I admit some staff arent the best, but what do you expect for a large chain that pays the minimum wage? Although one comment is right, it is full of sad old men and chavs, but thats because of the prices unfortunately. Also the fact that it is a "work of art" to get to the bar just shows you its a popular pub, so it cant be bad! Half the people on this website, are the sort i dread serving everyday, sad old men that moan about everything because they have nothing better to do, well your all wrong its a great pub, well mostly!
anonymous - 12 May 2006 03:49
Another Wetherspoons with its trademark inept staff but at least some were willing to have a chat. Probably the biggest pub I've been to in ages! Not the worst in the chain.
drunkmarv - 13 Mar 2006 20:31
Southend is a poor drinking town. The standard of pub (Cork and Cheese excepted) slipped into mediocrity in the early 90's, and not since been raised.

This place is typical of a modern pub in a modern high street. Poor service, surly doormen, and the guest beers provided by the well-intentioned head office are usually not properly kept or served.

On top of that, the place is divided between noisy chavs and lonely old men.

Avoid.
AshingdonMan - 13 Feb 2006 22:03
This pub is a total waste of time. If you are lucky enough to get a decent guest beer it usually tastes like crap. Mind you,the other day the guest beer didn't taste like crap, they didn't have any. This is of course, not very unusual. This is all down to very bad management.A couple of years ago the management changed and things have gone downhill ever since. Now it has hit rock bottom and there does not seem any way back. It should be law that any comments made about jd pubs should go direct to Tim Martin. Perhaps then he will take notice.
apa - 25 Jan 2006 18:07
weatherspoon's at it's worst, the pub stinks most of the time,thurs-sats it's full of rowdy drunks and to get to the bar is a work of art, staff are often ignorant and more interested in their looks than serving and know nothing about beer whatso ever. i have decided not to visit such a pub in future but to go to the cork and cheese in the plaza center cost more but you can get served and they have a fair selection of good beers on
whitewitch - 9 Jan 2006 14:50
I have to compliment the Last Post on the service I had last night. I was originally seated at Table 34 and ordered a Chinese chilli beef for my dinner. At the time of placing the order, this was the only table with a free seat and, shortly after returning to it, a nearby table became completely free so I moved so as not to disturb the other guy who appeared to be waiting for someone. The minute one of the waiters came around with someone else's order I told him I had moved.

However the meal was still delivered to Table 34 and promptly devoured by another customer.

What impressed me was how the matter was put right within 5 minutes on production of my receipt with the minimum of fuss and a profuse apology from staff and management. Although the initial error meant I had to stay about 30mins longer than I had intended, the staff attitudes here are just about the best I have encountered in any Wetherspoon pub.

Finally, if that were not good enough by itself, the Titanic Eight Bells (abv 4.5%) was absolutely exquisite in its fruitiness and hoppiness. This made it one of the best beers I have tasted in recent weeks.

Whatever marks the pub got on my previous visit, this one gives it 10/10.

I recommend that the local Camra branch pay another visit. The beer quality would almost certainly earn a swift re-entry into the GBG. Excellent.
lad_newton - 24 Dec 2005 17:22
sTANDARD WEATHERSPOONS ESTABLISHMENT- NOTHING TO WRITE HOME WITH. cHEAP DRINKS, FULL OF ALCOHOLICS OR AT WEEKENDS THE LOCAL CHAVS LET OUT TO PLAY
Mr.t - 6 Dec 2005 16:31
Pub is the second best in Southend which isn't saying much. The pub is badly managed, because it frequently runs out of real ale, especially when I'm there to drink it. The staff don't know how to change a barrel even if they had one to change. Useless.
BusterGut - 10 Oct 2005 19:16
This is a typical wetherspoons full of drunken old winos and loudmouth chavs but this is a taster of the shithole that is southend on sea when you get off the train my advice get the first train back to london
BAILEY65 - 22 Aug 2005 20:16
Massive pub, that always seems to be heaving. Big with the clubbing crowd at the weekends, so can be a bit of a nightmare to get a seat. Drinks aren't badly priced, and although theres no tunes.. the place a atmosphere of it own of a night.
Shiveybabe - 13 Aug 2005 19:18
Actually I'm going to take a point off this place as the service is abysmal. I was in here on 24th July for Sunday lunch and when it came to my turn to be served, the barman decided to serve the young girl to my left instead. "Fair enough," I thought, "I'd probably do the same if I were him." But when he then served an older woman and two Wethertramps before getting to me, I thought "f**k this" and went to The Alex down the road. It's not the first time it's happened.
Steve_D - 4 Aug 2005 17:09
JDW. Not bad. BIG pub. Good for spotting the bright young things, before they swan off clubbing, while they preen and fuss and sink copious amounts of alcopops. The average age of the patrons goes fro 85 to 20 between 7 and 8 in the evening!

Original venue of our semi-legendary Thursday night 'Club De Vin'...
halpo - 16 Jun 2005 15:41
Typical Wetherspoons: cheap drinks, cheap food, no music, no atmosphere. Very large pub and it's right outside Southend Central station so good if you're just coming in and fancy a drink before moving on, or for a last pint before heading off. Smoking/non-smoking sections and generally doesn't take too long to get served. Can get very busy but that's the sign of a decent pub. 7/10
Steve_D - 1 Dec 2004 13:20
Not quite where you'd take someone to impress them, but hell.. its cheap!! tYpical wetherspoons low, low, low, prices on drinks and food. Two projector TVs for football (and Corrie sometimes!), no music, but the sound of rambling drunkards gives it a strange warm atmosphere (Unless they go on the rampage!). Great meeting place to go on somewhere afterwards.
Ali - 12 Oct 2004 19:14
The of pub where you only plan to go in for one then before you know it youve had four bags of crisps and are totally lashed up.
tim martin - 29 Aug 2004 15:16
1.25 Corona Extra!?!!? Yes Please!!!
SamH - 23 Jun 2004 11:55
Ahh, the last post. VERY cheap JDW pub. Tends to be full of weird old men during the day but livens up of an evening. Like all Wetherspoons, no music but to its credit, theres a massive no-smoking section in the middle so great if youre trying to give up (like me!)
Dan - 14 Jun 2004 16:49
Great Pub
anonymous - 8 May 2004 01:27
The cheap booze seems to attract the Southend neer-do-wells, though it's central location is a bonus.
Simon - 11 Feb 2004 15:32
the drinks nice and cheap, good atmosphere but too busy and not enough seats.
