|
Soon to be a music school and coffee bar YAWN
|
This pub is always going to be up against it, because it`s owned by the hated Punch pub co. It was ok when it was a `freehouse` but get Punch got involved and bang not good anymore. I wish the people in here now well but a word don`t trust your BDM ( paul thomas) or you`ll come unstuck !!! Bewarned many have lost money because of this guy.

Keep Your Pants On Baldy

Ok Franklyn, what's your problem with this place?
You've made a total of 8 reviews in 2 years, 5 about the Anchor, everyone NEGATIVE (makes me wonder why you keep going back, or did you go once and hold a grudge?)
In fact, the only POSITIVE review you've made is about the King Alfred in Godalming

They would have to pay me to go there
anonymous - 21 Jan 2011 20:03 |
Nice pub on the outskirts of Godalming. The shame is that this has clearly had one too many makeovers, which have made the interior a bit of a mish-mash of styles. I would say the present owners are doing their best to make a go of this. But business was very quiet and the pub lacked atmosphere. Triple fff Alton's Pride and Brains Reverend James were the two beers on with another (Dorset Jurassic) coming soon.

This pub is a goner Going there is like visiting the dead

nice pub we had a really nice meal and a chat to the new landlord and landlady . the pub does need a lick of paint but apart from that it was very nice .
|
I am going to be the new landlady at The Anchor from 3rd August 2010. We will have real ales, homemade pub food. We will be open everyday for lunches and evening meals. We will be doing Sunday Roasts too. We are having a Bank Holiday BBQ to introduce ourselves to you. All welcome to come along and meet us.
|
don't hold your breath this is not going to work stay open 100/1 closing soon 2/9
anonymous - 9 Jul 2010 16:24 |
Will the current landlord make it to the 12 week stage? Bets being taken. Had more landlords than I've had busty barmaids. If the argument to turn a pub into housing applies anywhere, it applies here with no parking and neighbours who quashed the music licence. Shame because it used to be agreat student Free House. Punch killed it.
|
The Anchor is back to normal, it's shame about the lack of ales on tap early days, the staff are friendly and if you your like me and fancy good (for the price) pub food give a try last weekend 2 roasts for 10 can't be bad, they probably need to sort the board advertising food offers it's a bit small, you don't realise they do food??, the garden is big could do with a little green fingered TLC.
|
'Under New Management' again
Reopening as a steak house
|
Went by to try it out under its new name but they had no real beer. Just the Much Marcle Cider. I'll need to try again. Left me thirsty.
|
Well i have changed my mind i did not like it much when first open but its much better now will start to use again even happy days CLIFF was ok give it a second chance everyone
|
This is a decent music venue and is now called Bar OneTen.
|
Open plan music venue. Open Mic night on the Wednesdays with regular bands playing at the weekends. One real ale on.
|
Now called Bar OneTen. A very complicated musis venue, which has both good and bad points. The good points include the Real Ale which is certainly a bonus but the music itself can lead to an awkward atmosphere. 7/10.
|
Been into One 10 - or is it 1 Ten? - a few times now. Beer is great. Seems to have a bit of a mixed target market. It has an ambitious menu, but didn't really deliver. We'd rather pay a little extra and get freshly made food rather than defrosted mush. But I hope they sort they get things off the ground and decide what they want to be - it's already becoming a great alternative to the stuffiness of Inn On A Lake.
|
While I walk past twice a day I haven't yet been in a position to pop in for a visit, but I'm following these reviews with interest.
It's surprising how many 'one off' reviewers reviews seem to suggest that the residents of Godalming owe this pub a living.
Oh, and in nearly 20 years of regular visits I'd never once heard the Anchor called '110'
No rating as I haven't visited, but will soon
|
I've been to One10 pre- the foos service re-started, and since. In my view the food is so much better than the average pub fare it is a reason to keep going back. And I visited One10 when it was The Anchor. A darker, grungier, less welcoming place would be hard to imagine. If that is the sort of place you want to drink your pint, then I genuinely suggest that One10 is not for you. It is not an old man's boozer any more.
If, on the other hand, you fancy a coffee in the morning, a yummy meal at any time, and anything from a really nice cider on tap through beers and a decent wine selection, then do try One10. I don't think you will be told you are sitting in some old scrote's seat, drinking from his tankard or upsetting his mangy mutt. Oh, and check out the garden out back - it is beautiful!
|
I've been to 110 a couple of times since it re-opened and I've never had anything other than a warm welcome. The new Landlord is really making an effort to both bring in new business and retain the old clientele. This was never going to be an easy task but I think that you can see the effort that's gone in so far.
I'm a non-drinker (shock!) but I'm loving the selection of hot drinks available and my partner's been happy with the beers served. I'm looking forward to trying the food - the new menu's look really good.
I can understand some of the negative comments made. It's quite a big pub so creating an atmosphere whilst it's quiet must be tricky. What I would say is that if you have a suggestion, and it seems that many people who use this site have plenty of ideas - why not get chatting to the Landlord?
|
ONE10 or The Anchor, does it really matter? The reality is that it has always been known by both, as 110 is the street address for this establishment. According to 'triumph' all the pub needs to do is uproot it's self and move into the town centre, while catering for the flood of morris dancers... Perhaps it's time for a reality check. ONE10 is hampered by having no parking and a poor reputation, and these things take effort and time to overcome - effort on behalf of the good people of Godalming to walk there and enjoy the excellent selection of beers, wines and well kept ales, and time to build it's trade. As for the wall colour comments, come on guys, you'd think no-one had ever painted a pub wall white before. The old Anchor was smelly, sticky, dark and intimidating, the beer lines were ruined and the kitchen was unspeakable. The new place is clean, fresh, airy, hygenic and making a serious effort at keeping a pub within the community. Use it or lose it, 50+ pubs are closing a week, perhaps we should be a little more understanding of those making an effort to keep this one open and actually investing in it. Come in, bring your friends, make suggestions, participate. Just don't stand on the sidelines and snipe, then grouch when the place closes because you didn't use it. Love your local - it's an endangered species.
|
harveyb, I accept that a pub is not necessarily defined by its wall colour and that the people who drink there and the service you receive can go a long way to make a decent pub, but the point is when I visited, the staff outnumbered the customers and the stark decor made it feel characterless and soulless. Take a look at the best pub in Godalming - The Star and you'll see how it should be done. I want "The Anchor" to survive, but I don't think this is the way to go about it.
|
Oh dear never going here again like a bad film set and about as real don't see the point in the place not like your local
anonymous - 30 Jul 2009 18:02 |
Have been to 110 a few times now and have had a great time every time. A pub is not defined by the colour of its walls - but by the people who frequent it, and the service you are given.
They have all the right ingredients, friendly staff, excellent beers and wines. Anyone who went in the anchor previously will know that this is a far cry from what it was.
The amount of work that has been put in to this place deserves the local people to step up and support it. It says 'love your local' on the boards, so i suggest that is exactly what people do. I for one love this place!!!
|
I took a friend there about 2 weeks ago - bad idea.
I agree with triumph. NO ATMOSPHERE!UNFRIENDLY WELCOME! BAD IDEA TO CHANGE NAME AND PAINTED WHITE OMG
To whom it may concern...... You need a radical re-think of your business. Pool table would be a start someone who can smile behind the bar try dimming the lights or issue sun glasses at the door!

I made a point of visiting on Friday night, hoping that this was the answer to The Anchor, unfortunately I'm not sure it is. I'm not happy with the name change for a start. Are they aware that Morris Dancers perform here (or perhaps used to) as this was a traditional pub that served decent ales. Inside it is painted white - everywhere. It has no atmosphere and with only two other customers it felt as comfortable as a railway station waiting room. There were some decent ales on handpump, but I didn't get to try them as the intimidating feel was just too much for me. Please do something to liven it up a bit and I'll give it a second chance.
|
I've been to this place since it reopened as One 10. They have really transformed the place. Used to be old trad pub, now contemporary, light, airy and serving you everything from a morning coffee through to a good selection of beers and wines. They have an awesome, cloudy cider on tap. Real falling over water. I understand that the food service restarts soon and that they are planning to serve some different and interesting stuff, going under the 'angels and demons' banner! You would never know it from the front view, but they have a lovely terraced garden out back. Vey nice place, great staff and so highly recommended. Only not a 10 as the food has yet to start. I will be going back to try it out.
|
Ok everyone, We are 're-opening' 1st July, celebrations sat 4th July so would be lovely to see you all. FYI Under new management, new staff, complete refurb, refit and different vibe, please pop in, bring friends, we have put so much hard work in to turn it around, now called 'One Ten'
|
They've been working on The Anchor for a good few weeks now. It looks like the place has been gutted. Sign outside for a while now saying 'open soon, hiring now'.
|
Still closed, although I did see some lights on inside the other night. This used to be such a great pub in the 90s. Come on Punch sort it out.
|
This Punch pub appears to have closed as of about 2 weeks ago
|
Popped in here on the way back to a friends house from the town centre, I and said friend (despite living 200 yards down the road), had not been in here for a few years, my friend had been in a few months ago and said the place was a bit moody, we had a great pint served by a charming lady in what I believe to be the cleanest pub I have been in for some time (without the smell of bleach, why do they clean the floors with bleach sometimes).
The crowd was mixed and not to clicky as it used to be years ago, and my friends going back to try out the carvery at the weekend.
Nice pub, recommended.
|
Below average edge of town pub but looks nice from the main road below. (ignore picture above)
|
Best wishes to the new guys who have just taken over.
|
Wine from Sainsburys on sale by the bottle... Felt ripped off.

Top Notch Sunday Roast served by friendly people
anonymous - 29 Oct 2007 14:34 |
It would be nice if the landlord spoke to his clients, even those who he does not know, rather than snuggling up to his mates. His wife is lovely, but the upmarket aim is sadly falling short.
anonymous - 2 Aug 2007 18:40 |
What to say? The refit is nice but plain. The beer continues to be good and it is clear they are working to improve the reputation.
Unfortunatly they appear to have acquired a lot of custom from King Alfred regulars. The first impression potential customers get is of shaven headed, heavily tattoed men, and with the improvement in weather shirts are coming off and acres of fat is being displayed.
Not encouraging.
|
The beer was fine, but the pub reminded me of a working mans club
|
The refit looks good shame they did not ban smoking when they reopened. Ales good.
|
Went in the anchor last week to check out how the refurb has ended up, have to say its looking very good, managed to look fresh and modern without losing the old pub feel about it, nice selection of ales on, have been told sunday roasts are excellent, so may venture back to teat it out. All in all, very impressed with the progress thats been made
|
Walk past The Anchor everyday, and have seen the work in progress. Re-open friday 15th Dec 5pm Stopped in there for a drink today, had a great pint of St Peters Suffolk Gold. They also have Archers Pride and a couple of guest ales, all very good. Landlady took me for a little guided tour around the new build area, work is nearly finished, and i must say the pub looks fantastic, what a lovely setting to enjoy a nice pint. I would reccomend the anchor to anyone, the new area is lovely and when finished on friday will be great. And to top it off they have NEW TOILETS!!!! Atmosphere lovely. Staff and costumers extremly friendly. What a wonderful pub.
anonymous - 13 Dec 2006 23:46 |
Signs say refit finished on 15/12.
Hope the builders leave the pavement and fencing as they found it, as at the moment it's more like a building site than a public footpath (and just as dangerous in the dark).
|
Some major work going on here as of the start of the month.
The old bottle store's been demolished, also the gents.
It's going to be open for October, but closed during November, or so the blackboard says...
|
After my earlier negative comment, I'd like to post a more positive one.
There has quite clearly been money spent in and around the pub. The garden really does look great and the interior has been spruced up. I had a very brief chat with the 'older' couple there about the future plans and I have to say they are working hard to make a quality pub.
You clearly don't spend your own money smartening up a pub for the purpose of attracting some of Godalming less savoury characters, you'd of left it as the dive it was becomming
|
We stopped at The Anchor on Sunday, and i must say what a wonderful place. The football happernd to be on, and there was the most amazing atmosphere. The other customers and staff are lovely. We had a very good afternoon and evening.
They have an amzing garden and the food is good. There is No doubt we will definatly be going back, and very soon if i have my way.
Highly recomended
anonymous - 27 Jun 2006 15:39 |
I'm afraid to say I no longer stop in this pub on my way home from work.
The 'cliental' that sit out the front are enough to put me off going in, having drunk in Godalming for 15 years there are faces you know to avoid, and some of them seem to be sitting outside the Anchor these days.
I don't know whether they're desperate for custom or what, but I won't be stopping in for the moment...
|
What a cracking pub, friendly staff, and friendly customers, really great family atmostphere. Had the best pub roast i've ever had. Tempted to say it rivaled my mums own!! Watched the rugby and didn't want to leave. Can recomend the strongbow. Toilets aren't great but the landlord told me thier being refurbed soon, which can't happen too soon.
|
Had the most amazing Sunday roast just like the old days. Highly recommended.Six of us went had agreat time.
Taggy - 13 Mar 2006 23:33 |
In there last night and have to say it is a fairly below par boozer.
All very well that it hasn't turned into a Slug & Lettuce identikit boozer and to its credit the interior is tidy enough (cleanliness lacking a bit though...). And it is a good old fashioned drinking pub if that makes sense...
However the bogs are straight out of the Trainspooting film - Absolute filth. Decor, seats and bar area look as though they have not had a lick of paint or a spring clean for a few years too. Didn't get a chance to see the quoted garden so will reserve judgement there for a while.
Fine for a quick drink on the way into town - Wouldn't stay in there too long though

THE ANCHOR WAS THE KIND OF PUB THAT YOU DONT THINK WOULD EXIST IN LEAFY SURREY. THROUGHOUT THE NINETIES YOU COULD WALK INTO ONE OF THE MOST BOHEMIAN BARS IN WESTERN EUROPE {THAT INCLUDES AMSTERDAM IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN}IN LAUGHABLY CONSERVATIVE GODALMING. THE THE POLICE NEVER ATTENDED, WELL NOT IN UNIFORM ANYWAY, AND TROUBLE WAS RARE IF EVER DUE TO THE HIGH ON LIFE {AND MOST OTHER THINGS} ECO-FRIENDLY, TREE HEAD CROWD. THEN A DARK SHADOW MOVED IN AS THE LONG TERM OWNERS MOVED OUT. SUDDENLY THE CUSTOMERS BEGAN TO RESEMBLE THE CAST FROM GRANGEHILL AND BOOTLEG BURBERRY AND ALCHOPOPS REPLACED BRAIDS AND BITTER. THE COPPERS CAME AND WENT AND CAME AGAIN AND THE AVERAGE DRINKER OF LEGAL AGE WENT AND DIDN'T COME BACK. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A SAD STORY, THE ANCHOR HAS BEEN SAVED FROM THEME PUB ANONIMITY OR TOTAL DECAY BY OWNERS WHO ARE PREPARED TO INVEST TIME, WORK AND MONEY IN A TRADITIONAL BOOZER WITH A FANTASTIC GARDEN. IT MAY NOT BE THE PLACE IT WAS BUT THAT ISN'T ALWAYS A BAD THING.
|
This pub used to be great (about 10 years ago)and had a fantatsic beer garden a great selection of real ales, it then went seriously off the rails and became rather shit. However I`m really pleased to say that the new owners have totally sorted it out, the fantstic garden is even more fantstic and the interior is back to its old cheery self.....well done!
|
The Anchor is doing amazingly well. The new family are fantastic. They have transformed the place. They have just finished building a childrens play area, which looks fab. It is such a lovely place to go now, after it was run down for a long time. All do yourselves a favour and go there NOW!!!.
anonymous - 8 Aug 2005 22:57 |
The Anchor, has gone from a run down depressing pub, to a happy well presented lively pub, with a wonderful atmosphere. The family that have taken over have done a fantastic job transforming the garden into a paradise. The inside of the pub looks clean and well presented. Food is simple but very enjoyable. They have different events happerning every week, normally on a Weds and Sat or Sun. Well done, congratulations, you are a credit to the pub trade.

I understand David, Irene and their son Robbie and his fiance are taking over on 1 April. They are lovely people, and are well known at the Richmond Arms, but they have been local people for many a year. I am surprised that the To Let sign is still up! I know they have plans, including bringing the men's loos inside. I am sure that they will make this into one of the best pubs in town - with decent prices, good beer, and good wine (Pinot Grigio for me please). Since Dee and Dee left, this pub has had its well advertised problems, so let's hope that things will improve dramatically, and it becomes client and neighbour friendly.
As for the suggestion that one parks in the Inn on the Lake and the Masonic Hall, I consider that one should first ask the owners of those places, as it would otherwise be rather rude. Any way, the former is closed pro tem.
anonymous - 12 Mar 2005 16:20 |
Sadly this pub seems to be dying. It is now under temporary management after the last couple left because they couldn't make it work.
It seems it was killed by bad and incompetent management after it was sold to a pub company.
|
This pub has suffered badly since it's owners of 10+ yrs sold up a few years back.
It now looks like some effort is being made, they had 3 real ales available those tasted were fine.
Visit was a bit early in the evening to comment on the atmosphere.
|
The Anchor is currently shut due to some 'management' issues. Do yourself a favour, have a chat with the bank manager, get a mortgage and buy it!
Sen - 5 Apr 2004 12:57 |
It's a friendly locals pub that has punters of all ages. Playing diverse music & serving real ales and decent lager. Not bad!
jane - 17 Dec 2003 10:39 |
Lovely pub situated about half mile outside of town on the Milford Rd. Had a reputation for a while of being a very 'young' person's pub, but with new management this has dropped off in the times I've been in there on weekends and now you can get a seat.
Bar staff very friendly as are the clientelle, good selection of real ales, the cellar is kept very well.
Huge garden in the rear which abutts the small River Ock.
Was once a three bar pub (saloon, public and off-licnce), now one large bar with good seating.
Pub hosts the local Morris Dancers on special occasions (solstices, Boxing day etc...).
If no parking is available then simply pop the car in the nearby Inn on The Lake or behind the Masonic hall 100 yards down the road.

Good traditional pub, Dave and Kate will make you welcome. New landlords trying their very best to generate a "good old pub". the beer is well cared for so visit and give them your support.
