River View, Birkenheadback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Unbadged & partially obscured handpumps suggesting no real ale to be had. Seems a bit of a lost cause inside. No atmosphere to speak of.

With a poor ale range in Gallaghers, we decided to give the River View a shot. Both pubs overlook the Mersey and the ferry terminal. Hence the name of this one. There are handpulls here, but no real ales were on during our visit. Keg options were Fosters, Carling, Strongbow, Becks Vier, Stella Artois, Theakston Mild, John Smiths Extra & Guinness. The interior is modern and uninspiring.

London Pride was the only ale available last night and it was too warm in my opinion. Lively pub though.

Only ale available on Friday night was London Pride but it was well kept. The pub was more than half full but most punters were on their way to Pacific Road Theatre. There are rumours that the theatre is to close soon. I hope not as I enjoy my visits and the River View will certainly suffer if it does.

The new '18'? month owners have really grasped the thorn and really worked hard to attract customers. Their hard selling point has been food. It must be good, well fantastic, by the crowds in on Sun. But, as a drinker only at the bar, I was not to feel unwelcome, just a little hungry! I just fed myself with the thought, is this a pub or a restaurant?

I had a quick pint of Jennings Cumberland Ale in here a couple of weeks ago prior to going to a concert at Pacific Road Arts Centre. The pint was fine and one other ale was available. What a change in this pub. When it was the Worsley Arms I used to avaoid it due to the loud music blaring out and shell-suited scallies inside. Now the varied clientelle seem much more relaxed and the music is unobtrusive. I was greeted with a cheery smile from the barmaid and a 'hello' from the manager. It didn't seem like a Birkenhead pub at all! I'm told they even have a poetry evening here once a month. Well worth a visit if you are passing.

This pub has now changed its name to The River View. It looks like it has been recently refurbished. Open plan; the entrance takes you to the bar which has a quarry tiled floor and wooden bar with traditional feel. Although it has a high ceiling it has been fitted with modern warehouse style beams and cladding which along with steps running round a large brick column (which continues the warehouse feel) up to the raised area to the right has the effect of lowering the ceiling and splitting the large room into smaller cosier spaces. This raised area (which allows a better view over the river) is carpetted and has cast iron victorian type chairs and an original black leaded kitchen range. There is a larger room at the back of the pub which we didn't explore. Only one real ale beer on but it was the best, Jennings Cumberland (my hometown brewery), and very well kept. It had a welcoming feel with 5 or 6 regulars in, not bad for a Monday night, and the bus station is right outside and Hamilton Square underground station round the corner (one stop to liverpool).

Went in here upon finding that the Dispensary next door was closed-as is often the case these days. Average pint of Cains in what is a nice pub, full of bric-a-brac with fantastic views over the Mersey to the Liverpool skyline. The service was good too- we asked for the channel to be changed on the TV to watch football and this was promptly done. The only gripe- and it's a biggie- was the sheer volume of the cheesy dance music that was being played in what was a practically empty pub on a Saturday afternoon. With a few changes this could be magnificent.
