On a recent visit they had a well chosen and nicely cellared guest beer from Otley.
Still not much of a boozer though

This is not a pub at all....it is a chain restaurant with a bar. As per the last posting, walk on by to the Partridge or the Oak. My first choice would be the Oak, particularly if you want to eat (the Partridge does not do food !).

As other reviewers have pointed out, this place isn't really a pub at all. On the food front it's actually pretty good in terms of quality. A decent ribeye for 16 is about par for the course, but other dishes were a bit more pricey. Service was good and importantly the kids enjoyed their food.
For 2 courses for 2 adults and 3 kids plus drinks, we got no change from a ton. Which is a little more than I would have expected
As it isn't a proper pub, I never expect decent cask beer, however they did have bottles of Adnams Spindrift, which is a very acceptable beer indeed.
People do use the place as a pub, but it doesn't really work in that way for me.
In summary, you'll get a good feed if you're feeling flush, but walk past to The Partridge or The Oak if you want a pub.

No pub atmosphere, but it does have pricey food. Burger and chips or fish and chips both 10. Sausage and mash 9. Steaks, over 15. Did not get as far as the bar as previous reviews warned to expect London Pride and Old Speckled Shite. Left to find a proper pub.

Great pub with lots of rooms & easy to lose people in. Now back as the Bell but the beer choice was disappointing - just the GK Speckled Hen. Food first, ale second which is a pity.
|
Reopened as The Bell, another incarnation of the Mitchells and Butler brand (although you won't find any evidence of this on the menu, bills flyers etc in the restaurant) . Beer sales a mere sideline to food sales. Speckled Hen and London Pride the only beers on offer. Yet another restaurant masquerading as a "Village Pub". First and last visit I'm afraid.

Has re-opened .....back as the Bell Beers London Pride 2.95 Old Speckled Hen 3.20 Bombadier 2.75
Focussing on the food

Closing for refurbishment shortly. Reopening as "The Bell"!! Possibly a Mitchell and Butler job, like The Woolpack in Stoke Mandeville.

2nd recent visit and am really very taken aback by the pleasant atmosphere, helpful staff, good nibbles/sharing platters and excellent beers (and price).
Seating around the bar area gives it a more "publike" feeling.........
Well done The Bell oops sorry The Duck in....keep it up !

Having had a disagreement over the quality of the beer in the Oak (Fullers) I and as a result being asked not to return (the price of complaining ???) revisited the Duck In (still the Bell to me). Old Hooky - 2.85 a pint and very good - had three pints and really can't complain. Fullers London Pride 2.95 a pint - cheaper than the Oak 0.5 miles away (3.00 / pint) 3rd beer on @ 2.85/pint ( Wadsworth 6X untried) Can't comment on the food quality or service, but a daily special Ham Egg & Chips price 5.95 looks very good. How can you ruin that ? Atmosphere a little sterile but it was early (ish) in the evening. Will return.

Very comfortable but not really a "pub" - new to area so will try others before returning.
|
Two ales on today of which the Butcome was very good. Sunday lunch was good and seemed to be a popular destination.
|
Surly indifferent staff. Food and beer not too exciting either. There are far better real pubs in the area. Would walk past this one to The Oak any day. Real beer, real food and welcoming staff.
|
As a pub - not the greatest by any stretch of the imagination. Drinkers are relegated to standing at the bar or scrapping for the few seats that aren't set out for diners.
Beer wise, everything is pushed through a tight sparkler, which is OK if drinking Northern beers, but seems anachronistic if you're on the London Pride.
Bar staff far more interested in serving the food customers.
A port in a storm.

Three beers on when we went, London Pride, 6X and Timmy Taylor. All very well kept and served. Well deserved of their Cask Marque accreditation. Look out for Thunderbolt the barman. As to the food, standard chain pub stuff, and the tables are very sticky.
