Was overwhelmed by a strong smell of disinfectant when I walked in; was about to walk straight out again but the observant staff had spotted me so I stopped for a half. The bar staff were welcoming and friendly enough, but that disinfectant was overpowering and nauseating and, with no escape anywhere in the pub, I quickly drank up and left. Not a good experience and wouldn't want to eat in that atmosphere. The pub had a dated feel about it and had bare bulbs in the lamps causing some harsh lighting too. So all in all it's a thumbs down from me. Maybe I hit it on an off day.

Excellent guinness in here, and so it should be.
Lovely staff and customers.
If you like irish type bars, visit.
You wont regret it.

I quite liked this place. It was cosy with a large TV showing that evening's football and background music.

I had a pint of Arundel Castle, which wasn't my favourite beer ever, but it reasonably well poured by a pleasant barman.

The lay out of the pub seemed to create a good atmosphere. I'd certainly give it another go.

Great layout with the bar in the middle and booths at the back. Even though it's an Irish-theme bar it's got nice atmosphere and is good for pre-cinema drinks. Good prices.

As said nice pub with friendly bar staff , ale choice ARUNDEL sussex gold , dark star hophead , red river ale , and footslogger . Cider cheddar valley . as said a good pub .if i'm ever in the area again would revisit.

Quality pub good beer and a decent atmosphere.

It demands a re-visit in my humble opinion.

The Best Pub Roast In Brighton!

The Fiddlers Elbow in Brighton has to be the Best Sunday Pub Roast I have had in a long time. Everything is homemade and so fresh.

I have also had their ploughmans fully loaded. The minute I had a bite into the pork pie that they produce on the premises I now now this is my local for drink and food.

Have been in here twice over time now, one on a fairly packed weekend and once on a quieter weekday visit
Its a fairly large place with a rectangular feel, with a large bar around the centre.
Its got a decent range on tap.
No problems here generally, though not had any outstanding visit as such.
the_original_rawnsleys - 23 Apr 2010 11:15
Not a bad pub. The only thing I'd say is that the layout isn't too good as each side of the bar is quite cramped but not a bad atmosphere & the Dark Star was a lovely pint!
chunkypetersplat - 5 Feb 2010 15:13
popped in for the match on Saturday, turned out they weren't showing it although advertised. Place was a mess. Shame - another one bites the dust.
ianson - 6 Dec 2009 22:54
Nice, busy pub with good atmosphere, half decent selection of drinks and the food looked good.
robamy - 3 Dec 2009 15:41
We visited twice on our recent holiday, really friendly place, four beers from the Dark Star Brewery were available, are the 'snob screens' on the bar original, the only other place I've seen them was in the Lamb pub in Lambs Conduit Street in London. Would definately visit again

Visited last night for the first time in yonks to take part in the quiz

Thoroughly enjoyed the night (apart from one rather bizarrely up-his-own-jacksie student type person I found everybody, staff included, friendly and fun)

The next quiz might be the last as the current guvnor and QM are moving on to somewhere in Ditchling Rise but, given the number of people in attendance the next incumbent would be thick if he/she didn't continue it

brighton_toffee - 23 Sep 2009 13:29
Good choice of beer now but staff still rude.
notters - 27 Apr 2009 17:58
Brilliant Quiz, not too hard but challenging and especially fun in a town awash with lame quiz nights. Food is tasty and simple, just what I like from this kinda place. Friendly staff serving good drink at great prices. cheap guinness, and it warms my heart to be in an atmosphere where everyone is smiling.

tip top.
moonmonk - 17 Feb 2009 20:57
Nice enough, but done up in that slightly over the top "Irish Pub" way, like an Irish Pub for tourists!
But it does have a great feel to it, very friendly, and a nice pint.

7/10.

back again, this place has a great facelift via just the reorganisation of seating it seems! same management and staff, very friendly and chatty. Drinks selection has gotten even better with harvey's on cask (not sure when this happened but assured it's on all the time now)

Food is good and well priced and the toilets have been snazzed up since I was last here - and saw a great duo playing when we were there on weds. all round one of the best pubs in brighton

This pub used to be one of my favourite pubs in Brighton. However it has been somewhat tainted by the service my friends and i had recieved one evening. The grumpy, arrogant attitude of one of the bar staff isnt doing the owners of this pub any justice. To actually have a drink poured out and given to you, then for the bar man to walk off talk to his friend for 5 minutes and leave you standing there waiting to pay it just plain rude. There wasnt even an explaination as to why we were left waiting.
moley1 - 20 Aug 2008 14:37
One of the only real pubs in town centre. The food in here is really good, and reasonably priced too. The ale is well kept and the whole place has a much friendlier feel than most of the other pubs in town.
daisychain - 19 May 2008 17:32
good priced Guinness. Bar staff appear to be in a coma most of the time. Shame no smoking area. Only pub worth going to in west street area.
emmadelahunt - 23 Mar 2008 11:38
This is one of the last real pubs in brighton, it's right up there with the Basket Makers and the Evening Star for its lack of pomposity. Good music, nice people, but it is a shame about the toilets (i hear rumours that the bogs are being refitted tho... please)

Great Guinness.
ianson - 9 May 2007 16:01
A great little boozer, if going a little downhill (employ some Eastern European staff, at least they make the effort, the spliff heavy brighton donuts working there at the moment are a shocker !!). The worlds best happy hour, great music, a brilliant sunday roast, and if Heather is working when you go there you're guaranteed a lovely smile with your Krony !
georgem - 5 Mar 2007 15:12
Used to be a good irish pub, no longer. Check out the filthiest toilets in sussex, if not further afield!! told the bar staff the Wc was full of flies & other bacteria (to put it politely)......told my a moppy haired muggy student to "tell the management" swerve it!
davrod - 18 Jan 2007 15:39
A decent pub. Spent a new years eve here and at the stroke of midnight i threw my hands up and knocked an antique shotgun of it mount and on to my head! The rest of the year followed suite but i digress. Difficult to get a seat a lot of the time, but if you can it's a nice enough place for a drink or eight
Crizqo - 29 Dec 2006 16:55
It looks like a good irish bar but if you are irish, avoid. I went in for some craic agus ceoil and more specifically to watch the Ireland vs Germany match. After speaking to two members of the bar staff (who wouldn't be able to point out Ireland on a map) they informed me that they weren't going to show the game on the big screen, unlike the english match earlier. I then went around the corner to walkabout with the rest of the irish to watch the game. With a large population of Irish in Brighton there is a gap in the market for a proper irish bar which shows Irish matches, GAA matches and maybe even a member of staff who knows where Ireland is wouldn't hurt. The fiddlers elbow offers style without substance. The guinness wasn't great either.

Good Guinness at 2.19 in Central Brighton ? Crazy but true
douvres - 1 May 2006 21:23
Fab Pub, it has a great atmos....very chilled out. Very unprentious and to make things better it was only 3.88 for two pints. The food also looked great.
Did not see a chav in sight and had a good mixture of locals and non locals a like. However the night we paid a visit it was very windy outside and for some reason the Manager insisted on opening the window next to us. So every few seconds we got blasted out. So we closed the window, but the manager would reappear and open it for us....ha ho.
Apart from that this must be one of the best pubs in Brighton.
TheWizard - 6 Nov 2005 10:36
A bit of a mass produced oirish pub, or so I thought. Actually has it's own distinctive vibe and does do theoccasional bt of decent live music.
antmiller - 20 Oct 2005 18:16
I totally agree with John Bowers a great place to go for a Guinness frenzy
scooterroy - 10 May 2005 11:43

Friday night - excellent, great atmosphere, very busy, but polite staff made the wait for beer not a problem.

Saturday night - only groups of 2 allowed in by the bouncer, pub was empty clientele miserable. Baffled!
anonymous - 23 Jun 2004 14:03
I watched the England vs France game (24-21) in here in 2004. Great atmosphere, even from the Irish fans in the pub. When I go to Brighton, I often come here.
Jon - 8 Jun 2004 18:06
Very crowded but the Guiness is fantastic
John Bowers - 21 Nov 2003 14:48
GUINNESS 1.99!!!!!

I think that about covers it.
vulga - 2 Oct 2003 16:01
Good fun when there's sport on, and decent Guinness.
Briony - 14 Jul 2003 15:43
I'v only been there once. It seemed to have a good Irish theme.
