Pleasant, if a little bland, town centre pub. Beer good but seems aimed at a dining clientele.

Nice Pub ,Ale a bit on the pricey side but a good vibe .Also able to stand outside with a Pint ,was very busy on a Saturday evening at 6pm.

Stopped by The Sussex a couple times during a brief stay in Brighton late last year, good beer, good food and friendly staff, and an especially nice atmosphere when we came in dressed up for Halloween.

Pro tip - If you're in this pub and dressed up for Halloween, sit at the table facing the side entrance and you can scare loads of people walking down that alleyway!

Beer OK but served fish and chips where fish was so off that it still stank after being deep fried.

Visited this week. Had a well served pint of Speckled Hen. Clean inside but very dull as previously stated. Didn't try the food. All the other ales on were bland and uninspiring but at least the pub does serve real ale.

An OK pub with OK beer, scruffy outside area. Very dark inside - probably nice in winter but not on a summer's day. All round a bit average really

Quite the most agreeable pub in the centre of Brighton with friendly bar staff, attractive prices and the most delightful landlady you could ever wish to meet. It serves good, honest pub grub which holds its own against the myriad specialist restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Spotlessly clean, a wide choice of beers, including real ales and a nice patio area where one can enjoy live music offered by talented musicians playing a few yards away. Just be careful when going to the gents', it is a bit of a squeeze to get in and can be a problem for the less mobile .Or for the inebriated, but that's their problem! Do visit this super establishment.

Nice Sussex (Harveys) at the Sussex.

By the way, might I suggest that somebody uploads a new photo to the site, preferably from the front? The current picture does not do the building justice

Popped in here last Friday (16th) for a pint. Well appointed, not too pricey but four "Thank you from the staff" collection buckets on the bar? Not a good move, in my opinion. As an ex-publican, I would not have allowed it

good pub nice beer and food kept nice and clean

Very well kept beer, excellent pub food. Sadly the kitchen got bogged down on our last visit and the puddings took forever. Some pubs would have just shrugged their shoulders and said 'oh well'. Not the ladies behind the bar at the Sussex. They were genuinely upset and kept apologising. The sign of a really good business is not just when things go smoothly, but how they cope and correct when things go off the rails. The Sussex is well worth a visit.

We have been to The Sussex when on holiday for about 6 years. The landlady always remembers us and makes us feel very special. Food & drink always good.

the owner/manager is a bit moody, never eaten there but do go when in town......no magners, only sirus!! Worth a visit, footall and sport on most times.

I decided to pop in here for roast. Last time ill do that again. The roast beef looked weird, stringy, overcooked. the roast potatoes had just come out od the freezer and were microwaved, no taste, jsut watery, the carrots tasted off, the cabbage was the only vegetable that they could not freezer and reheat, lack of gravy, horseradish tasted more like mayo than horseradish, overall pretty disgusting, i felt quite ill that evening after eating it...by all means go for a pint, but not under any circumstances a roast lunch.....this is probably the reason why this was one of the few places on a sunday with almost noone eating a roast! ugggggghhh!

without tourists a lot of pubs in brighton would have closed down years ago. get real its 2006 not pre-war.nice pub, interesting street entertainment and a superb piece of totty serving a decent beer.yes, i am sexist.

I understand what the other members mean when they talk about tourists but that will be the result of its position in town. Only started using it recently and must confess that I have been pleasantly suprised.Appears to be well run and the bar staff have obviously been trained properly.
Harveys is kept well too which results in a lot of it being sold.Always a good sign

Funny that Hilary should mention this as a start for a crawl - it's the starting point for the crawl I created on this site!
toffee_exile - 23 Apr 2005 13:36
Good pub, great start for a pub crawl, central position and good atmosphere.

I remember many a great pint of Ruddles County - maybe I'm out of date!

One word....

TOURISTS!

My work here is done.
Jim - 2 Oct 2003 16:30
As Dennis says, it can get busy with tourists but generally not of the annoying variety. Last time I was in there, there were three separate occasions when women mistakenly entered the mens toilets! It does have one of those little signs of a silhouette of a man on the door so not sure what that was all about. It's a friendly place right enough and I'd definitely make a return visit.
johnkn7 - 26 Sep 2003 18:04
Traditional pub in The Lanes, it can get busy with tourists in the Summer, but if your'e lucky you can sit outside where buskers may be doing their stuff, qute often Jazz
