Lovely wood panelled bar that services the Crown Hotel, a large imposing white building near the market square. The bar is reached via a small passageway between buildings. We visited on a February afternoon and found it very snug. Friendly staff and plenty of locals, plus a roaring fire. Reasonable beer choice as well; Adnams Broadside, Abbot and Southwold IPA, along with Newby Wyke Orsino, a crisp blonde beer, very pale in colour, brewed in Grantham. I had 3 pints of the Orsino which was an easy drinking pint with a zesty taste.

Went here after reading the positive reviews here but seem to have caught it on a bad day. I liked the comfortable, timbered bar but the locals seemed a grim bunch and I swiftly sank my - admittedly fine - pint of Adnams Broadside and left.

Still serves a reasonable pint. Though busy was not as noisy as on my last visit - it seems like it has it's moments.

This is a great, unpretentious town centre pub. Always an interesting selection of ales, in good condition, and served by quietly efficient and friendly bar staff. Open fires, pine panelling and pictures of the bomber squadron based in Downham during the war add atmosphere - although just occasionally some of the locals get a bit fractious (we were once entertained by a great ongoing punch-up amongst a funeral party!). If you want food, it's giant portions quickly and efficiently served - some of the best Ham and Eggs in the region. I've visited often - never been disappointed.

Nice bar area with real fire. Had a good pint of Abbott Ale and the other handpulls also looked good. The real fire really makes the place feel cosy. Didnt eat but the food that we saw come out looked good. Worth a visit.

Lovely old timber framed building with real fireplaces, interesting old-looking decor and five real ales (2 Adnams, 2 Greede King and Hornbeam). My Hornbeam was in fine form and it was a pleasant bar to have a drink and the staff and the real fire made us feel very welcome.

An old fashioned looking (if refurbed) hotel bar that serves a decent pint of Adnams. The Friday night clientelle seemed to be a tad pretentious and too much up their own a/h's though. Much preferred the little bar on the station platform while waiting for the train - though it isn't listed - had a decent pint of Elgood's Ice there.

Geting back to its best now that the the boss is back behind the bar and clearly in charge. Good range of beers and the new toilets are a huge improvement.

Reasonable, if small, bar inside a traditional coaching inn. Not particularly obvious from the street, but worth looking out for.
