user reviews of the Hole in The Wall, Southsea

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Lovely little pub full of charm, and really well cared for. Four casks available, including one behind the bar on gravity. No food on Saturday unless booked in advance. Quiet relaxed atmosphere. I like the snug at the back. Appears to always have Hole Hearted available. A really lovely place worth seeking out if in the area.
SilkTork - 24 Jan 2016 22:54
Sadly, as you can probably gather, the post from Cherrybab below is from a former employee who left us over 3 years ago. She is almost 70 years old but really needs to do some growing up, such a shame.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 25 Aug 2015 21:18
RUMOR has got round that the landlord buy all his staffs and others there carma membership. Just so he can be Voted for the pub a year award again, That sad ., Cheat springs to mind, i cant belive ANYONE would go that low just to get votes, shame, its sould be won on merit not fidding the votes. As for moading about other pub ie like the Huis and the Meat and barrel taking your trade, GOOD for them, thay do have some awsome beers and food, HAS for your pub, beers drinkable i rate you 0, for cheating.
cherrybab - 19 Jun 2015 11:48
A classic. I can see why it keeps getting a best pub award. Tried out the Summer ale which was in superb condition. Can't wait to visit again.
BARRY2771 - 5 Jul 2014 16:59
Superb place - sets a benchmark for others to try to aspire to. Very good choice of well kept beers . Great food - fantastic atmosphere and quirky interior. Well worth a visit.
musicjunkie - 22 Feb 2014 09:46
Best pub in portsmouth!
Dynekery - 18 Jan 2014 13:31
As you'd expect, it maintains a good and varied selection of quality real ales, an impressive bottled Belgian selection and a whisky selection that's getting better. Despite a plethora of pubs in Portsmouth, there aren't that many that satisfy the criteria of a good real ale pub and this is one of them. There seems to be a new curly haired barmaid (apologies can not remember her name) who's adding to the already varied staff. She brings nice big smile and always polite and friendly with a splash of cheek (which goes along way now and then) which made me and my friends want to stay there longer just to see what she would say next. The bar staff in general seem to have a good way of making people laugh so it's a good atmosphere with the exception of the gentleman with the glasses who seems to do everything he can to avoid serving customers. On my last visit noticed the staff having to deal with a particularly difficult crowd but still maintained a smile and being polite.

The food is good quality home cooking which is what you need, only negative comment is that the menu doesn't seem to have changed for a long time and they no longer stock Granny's weapon grade ginger beer. However this is not a choice of the pub I have been told.
Hophead99 - 28 Jul 2013 12:31
Most of the recent comments about this fine pub resonate with me

Beers are great, as in REALLY GREAT - {Think, selection on offer, price & presentation-V good indeed}

Staff are sometimes Great & sometimes not - hey they are people! So, all in all, GREAT - new manager, Tony?, is super great!! The lovely girl (student in Brighton) is just beyond great & super-great & is absolutely FANTASTIC imho. Enough already ;-)

The landlord? Hey, he's running a pub not a popularity contest! He's genuine & may have had a successful personality / fun bypass for all I know ;-)

My advice ....Enjoy the Beer, Ignore the Landlord (he won't mind or notice anyway ;-)

Hic! Hic!

p.s. This is a true 'Destination Pub' - if you're in the area; you should visit! Cheers

Aleiain - 27 May 2013 16:44
From the moment I first visited this pub I knew it was a special place. You cannot fault the efforts of the landlord to source such a wide and varied selection of beer on constant rotation for prices that put other pubs to shame. If it is for a full session, a quick pitstop, or to try your luck (sorry I mean skill and knowledge) at the Thursday night quiz its a great place to be. But Shhh, don't tell everyone about it - it is our little secret!
Dazzebo - 16 Apr 2013 19:04
The GBG yet again saves the day. WELL worth the treck in the rain from the Gunwharf Quays, where the pubs are greatly over rated and even more over priced.
This is a gem, friendly landlord, friendly local customers and excellent beers.
Island Yachtsman, Rhymney Scrum V, Stepney Green and Jamaican from Brodies and Oakleaf Texas Red, Dark Star Festival. Just missed the Oakleaf Hole Hearted.
TonyMitch - 15 Feb 2013 09:33
Packed on the Saturday we visited but worth putting up with the congestion for the fantastic beer selection on offer.

The beer from local breweries was good and at prices of £2.70 to £3.20 (most were £2.70 or £2.80) it was good value for money.

Decent selection of foreign bottled beer again very well priced at £3.00 a bottle.

A propr drinkers pub popular with locals and beer tourists alike.

Pleasant and efficient bar staff.

beershot - 12 Nov 2012 17:34
I wont be popular here but speaking as i find - my last visit may be my last for a little while - ale good and cheap as always, staff a bit indifferent on this night but the landlord was nothing short of rude to us which surprised and disappointed us, ok maybe he was having a bad day we all get them. Also we got non to subtle looks from customers who obviously were not happy with our having a table they wanted. I realise locals can get like this but I have never experienced this or the landlords attitude in this pub before.
odbod - 25 Sep 2012 11:19
This fairly intimate pub, situated at the better end of Castle St, is all about the beer. The Avocet was very good and the punters seem a lively convivial bunch - the type of place you could sit in all evening, whiling away many hours before chucking out.
pkrp - 9 Sep 2012 20:54
Lucky to get a space on the wednesday night we visited. Full of character. Lovely pint of Thatchers
WelshOwl - 27 Aug 2012 17:13
An absolute gem of a place. Every ale I've had has been excellent (and I've had a few I can tell you). A wide range of foreign bottled beers. A place where you'll meet some interesting characters of Pompey, friendly and welcoming. There's a smart lady who's quite entertaining telling punters to 'sit down'.... by the end of the evening all her airs and graces are out the window as she staggers out the pub! Have the sausage and mash, it's to die for. Competitive prices, great beer and great food with great company to boot. Oh... and a regular winner of CAMRA pub of the year.... and rightly so.
stevo68 - 25 Jul 2012 18:27
Return visit on our trip to portsmouth. Superb beer and good atmosphere.
Nice pint of Darkstar revelation.
caskforce - 10 Jun 2012 17:11
Visited here several times recently when visiting the lad at Uni. Oakleaf Hole Hearted was very good, as was the Thatchers from the barrel. Friendly, efficient service. Seats are at a premium, or at least were on the Saturday early evening I visited, but don't let that put you off.
CADS - 11 May 2012 11:30
An absolute gem of a pub. Astonishing array of ever changing ales kept in perfect condition. Can be a bit tricky getting a seat during busy times but in this gaff it's all about the beer. Amen to that!
gravedigga - 7 May 2012 14:44
An absolute pleasure to have as my local. Perfect beer every time served by friendly staff. What's not to love
DaveProcter - 30 Apr 2012 15:44
Excellent pub. One of the cheapest decent pubs in Southsea. The Hole Hearted beer is good here
the_islander - 29 Jan 2012 14:15
Very nice traditional friendly English pub with a very good selection of real ales. Recommend to young and old alike and well worth a visit.
Apeman - 18 Dec 2011 12:08
excellent couple of pints, and an extended menu of foreign beers, now selling a good range of 15-20 belgian beers.
littlecon - 13 Dec 2011 10:28
As usual, our genial landlord presented us with a fine array of ales for our delectation and delight. The standard Whole Hearted was there (a pleasure in and of itself) but the fff brewery in Alton was represented well and the Stairway beckoned (although so did the Moondance) and was well received. However, the Palmer 200 from Bridport we had next was an absolute revelation and was quite simply the best pint I've had since I had Jaipur several months ago. Power to the mightylala's elbow...
ashhowe - 5 Nov 2011 14:09
Good points - thats easy, friendly staff and patrons, ales in good condition, prices fair
Bad points - getting to sit down - get there early and guard your seat or you will be standing a long time at weekends (pop around to the barleymow if your tired) and the range of ales rarely suit my taste whenever I pop in but obviously popular as the pub sells plenty of them.
odbod - 12 Oct 2011 12:55
Popped in last night, they have already sold 15 firkins in 2 days, only 35 more to sample in the next7, what I had last night was stunning

Great choice of beers, usually something new to try whenever I go in...
Reverend - 16 Feb 2011 20:34
It has countryside opening hours - we were rather miffed to find it closed for business on a Saturday lunchtime! I have heard the hype and would love to see if it lives up to it, but I suppose it'll have to be another time.
TWG - 14 Feb 2011 18:00
No don't put this out in the country, it'd be full of hoorays, and the excellent sausage and mash would be about 12, not the great value it is now, a whole review without mentioning the beer sorry
littlecon - 10 Feb 2011 18:02
last pub on our crawl. wish we got here when we could of had more time to sample all the ales. A country pub in the city!!
caskforce - 10 Feb 2011 17:54
This is a great place to visit for a pint. Was very busy on Friday evening but it was not hard to see why it was so popular! An essential destination if your in the area.
anybody - 6 Feb 2011 10:42
Great little pub with excellent beer. Portsmouth's essential visit. Only downside: due to it's popularity, it can be difficult to get a seat in the evening.
baxterfish - 29 Jan 2011 22:15
excellent pub. But get there when it opens. It very small inside. But beer is perfect especially the Hole Hearted.

littlecon - 4 Aug 2010 08:35
l would like to post this coment by Jonathan Wooldridge, which he put in the NEWS on saturday, July 31, 2210, It said ;
Way down in portsmouth there is something to fear At the hole in the wall they sell weapons grade beer Just a couple of sips and you"ll have the taste But a couple of pints you"ll be right off your face There is a grandma who make it at 5 per cent dead She delivers her warning like a slap to the head It tastes a little bit bitter and it"s like ginger ale When you"re drinking this stuff you could wrestle a whale But then all of a sudden when it slop round your belly Your eyes all woozy and your legs move like jelly Then dizzy meets fizzy and your burp hits your friend As you all laugh like hyenas and drive folk round the bend By the time the bell"s rung you"ll be singing along , As you"re bouncing off lamp-post because your legs are all wrong. ln a couple more hours you"ll need more than a bed With your Anadin Extra and your big swollon head. Just a day to remember and the bit that you"ll hate. ls the smaii tiny writing says "a week to hyrate, l would like to buy this man a drink , because he as sum up , what a great place this pub is , And even the beers are great , l think this is the best pub in portsmouth . the beers are cheap, And it my favourite. My hat is off to you both, Jon and kerry, keep up the great work you both put in this pub.
keela - 3 Aug 2010 12:45
It looks the part of the archetypal camra luvvies alehouse - decent looking pub, wide range of ales and Belgian beers etc... but the pint of Hole in the Head I had was yet another barely drinkable pint. Not quite bad enough to take back but not pleasant and a struggle to drink and it put me off having another pint here. Will give it another try next time I'm walking from the hovercraft back to town though.
anonymous - 18 Jul 2010 10:06
I am afraid that my review is not going to help the ratings. A flat pint of Hole Hearted. Mild that was pretty much on its sell by date. Two lads that we were sat with had different four pint jugs and this was very hazy when poured into the glass. Standards are slipping in this old favourite.
GazzaTheBeerMan - 10 May 2010 12:01
I agree with the almighty lala, as land lady of the Barley, the reviews of my pub are all good and there has not been a new one recently yet the rating has gone down from 7.3 to 7.1 in the last couple of weeks. We were above 8 at one point but again with no bad reviews we quickly went down. There should be a review to back up the rating.
the_toad - 1 May 2010 14:45
Ashhowe I being the landlord of this pub I have to admit I have no idea how the scores work on this website. You complain of a low score of 7.2, vote I hope for more than this and we go down to 7.1 Open to abuse but then the rated by numbers haven't changed that much which makes me think someone at BITE HQ has an influence. I love this website and always check when we are going on hliday but I do honestly think scores are manipulated.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 17 Apr 2010 01:50
Can't understand why only showing 7.2 rating currently - worth more!!! Continuing provider of the life-giving Hole Hearted, and a constantly changing range of guests -yesterday's Ammonite from Dorset was another good one. And I have a request for TheAlmightyLaLa - do you do requests? Would love to see Hexhamshire beers, and any Kelham Island or Abbeydale beers from Sheffield.
This watering hole continues to be a solid rock in the social quicksand.
ashhowe - 14 Apr 2010 22:09
Excellent as ever and can now be combined with a visit to the Barleymow down the road.
baxterfish - 24 Dec 2009 14:15
Our bus trip around watering holes of Hampshire last Saturday didn't originally include the Hole In The Wall. Thank God that Mike & Caroline from Havant Brewery suggested it when one on our itinerary was dropped at short notice. We turned up around 2.30 with 31+ people on board our bus and were made exceedingly welcome. Beers were in cracking condition. My favourite? Oakleaf Stout - sublime!!!
bobinman - 9 Dec 2009 00:49
Fantastic session last Friday at the end of a Pompey daytrip. Superb ale line-up included two from Burton Bridge alongside Oakleaf Hole Hearted which was excellent. Pub unchanged since my visit of 2005 and I received the same warm welcome from staff and locals alike that I had done on previous visits. A very well-run, friendly boozer; everything a pub should be. Well worth coming out of town to find - you will not be disappointed unless you arrive outside opening hours!

lad_newton - 19 Oct 2009 01:16
Fantastic little pub. What it lacks in size it makes up for in being just so lovely!!! Lots of real ales on tap and, although there were none available when I went, I was assured that cider on tap was also more often than not an option.
A real find and must visit for all real ale enthusiasts.

One of my favorite pubs in country. On my last visit there were 5 excellent ales on including some lovely Dark Star Hophead :) To all the staff keep up the good work!
bdrinker - 5 Feb 2009 00:54
Almightylala - first, an apology. I had written down the meal timings for the Florence, which was the pub above yours in GBG07, so I was wrong to think you do food til 8.30. A mistake on my part. It was definitely the right pub, though, as we had walked half way across town to find you and I remember the address.

What that doesn't alter, though, was that we were told in a fairly offhand way that food was stopping in 10 minutes so we couldn't have any. The jostling did occur, and while I appreciate it may have been accidental, there was no apology or acknowledgement from the person involved.

In fairness, then, next time I'm in Portstmouth I will come in and try your food and hopefully be a bit more positive afterwards.
ETA - 18 Nov 2008 10:18
In reply to ETA, are you sure you've got the right pub as the last two GBG's have not got any food times at all. Also I don't recall ever having a beer on called Copperhead and to be jostled by another customer sounds very unlike this place. Please reply as very interested to find out what pub you did check out in the GBG.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 15 Nov 2008 18:23
I was highly disappointed with this pub, especially as I had made a point of travelling right across town to get here. GBG says food served until 8.30pm, we arrived at 7.50 and were told we were too late to order, even though the fat-splasher was still in the kitchen. Then I was jostled by another customer, who knocked my pint over and refused to apologise, let alone replace it.

The beer (Copperhead) was OK, but nothing special. Another pub with an undeserved reputation for excellence, and one to which I won't be returning in a hurry.
ETA - 13 Nov 2008 13:35
Caught this pub the night before the beer festival and the choice and quality of the ales was pretty good then! Great little local, very good bar staff and nice feel to the place. Went in on the first day of the festival also and wished I didn't have to get the train out of Portsmouth that evening. I'll be back.
Alfnoax - 4 Oct 2008 23:41
oh no, not another beer festival, please tell me i've not got to drink all 40 of them in the coming week, mind you it would be good
littlecon - 2 Oct 2008 18:04
Beer Festival coming up this Friday the 3rd October 2008 till Sunday 12th. Those of you that know the pub know we haven't the space to put on a normal beerfest so we will endeavour to put on 40 beers over the week, 26 new to us 14 old favs.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 30 Sep 2008 00:23
The only pub I know where the landlord opens for a group of football fans when he would normally be closed. Serves the best pint of Nuptu'Ale and the wife loves the belgian beer. A country pub in the town
winge1 - 19 Aug 2008 18:53
Answer to previous message. Slake the beer in the jug would not have been there for more than a couple of minutes. We poor a couple of pints into a jug when a beer is particularly lively. Helps us to keep down wasteage and keep the price down to you, having a beer where you waste a 1/2 to the drip tray for every pint would mean a price of more like 3 a pint to the customer. Not good
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 4 Aug 2008 22:22
Still a great pub, but... I'm having to reduce my rating from 10 after what I saw this Saturday. Pints were being topped up by the barman from a jug that was a quarter full. How long the beer had been in the jug is anyone's guess. Not good.

Try the alcoholic ginger beer.
Slake - 4 Aug 2008 18:31
This very small place feels like a country pub in the heart of the city, the staff are very friendly and seems to gather nice punters. The beers and ales on tap are unique (you have to try hole-hearted) oh and pop into the India Arms next door for a curry afterwards.

Popped in for a couple of pints and must say both were in excellent condition. The staff were very friendly too.I look forward to visiting for a longer session next time.

I haven't reviewed this lovely pub for 2.5 years, I've realised, during which time we've being going regularly. Still can't find a single bad thing to say - the atmosphere is still welcoming and relaxing, the AlmightyLaLa still keeps a barrel of beer just the way it should be, the ciders keep coming, the guest beers keep rotating, and the eponymous Whole-Hearted still tastes like angel tears on the tongue. The anonymous poster who complained there was no totty - why not take your own along with you?
ashhowe - 22 Jul 2008 20:27
I would like to thank The Almighty Lala for his kind congrats. It will still take me a long time to reach the amount of awards that he has got. hopfully 2 good real ale pubs in the area at least. Froggi
Froggi - 4 Apr 2008 18:47
Congratulations with your entry in the Good Beer Guide 2008! Well done.
georgeclooney - 2 Oct 2007 15:05
i've just seen the beer list for the festival which starts on friday 28th and runs for 9 days, it's going to be hard to drink anywhere else for a week or so, lots of unusual ale for the area(as always)
littlecon - 27 Sep 2007 08:55
I have to agree with the below comments, and point out, again, that pub reviews are the only place people can talk about BITE, which is stupid and wasteful. There should be a message board s to allow the people who make it work, ie us posters, a chance to discus and air views about how it works and give us a better sense of ownership.

I am also dubious about anonymous posters, but dafter than that is the fact that all a poster's reviews are displayed with a click on their name but the is no ranks given. I know some people are snooty about messageboard ranks but just having a number after a name shows everyone how much you've contributed.

I noticed your comment on the Wenlock Arms page.
I think you will find that the speed that you go up and down the Top 40 ratings, is in direct proportion to the number of members that have rated your pub. Your pub has been rated by 62 users while the Wenlock has been rated 268 times. It is therefore a lot more difficult for spoilers to move the Wenlock's Top 40 position.
I have a pub in Reading, which at present has a rating of 8.8/10 (rated by 22 users). If we get 3 more good reviews we should go top, but I don't expect to stay there for more than half an hour.
I think that members shouldn't be allowed to post anonymous reviews (what are they trying to hide?). It is also impossible to see what other rubbish they may have written. If the username is displayed, as in "smiff", you can click on his name and see he has only made 3 reviews and slated every pub!
I also think you shouldn't be allowed to rate a pub without reviewing it. I bet there are a lot of people out there with a dozen different usernames, purely to manipulate the Top 40.
I haven't been in you're pub yet, but I'll be reviewing it soon - so watch out.

P.S. We've got Whole Hearted in our pub at the moment!

meeko - 21 Sep 2007 09:35
In response to Lord Lucan the website works fine if you're using Internet Explorer however if you're using another Browser, I think Firefox has been mentioned to me, then it does tend to mix up the format of the website. Have mentioned it to the company that did the website for me but am still waiting for a reply. Thanks for letting us know though.

On another subject funny how we manage to get to Number 1 in the top 40 one day and then receive 2 bad comments the next mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm is there possibly a connection.

THEALMIGHTYLALA - 20 Sep 2007 16:53
hole is the only thing i could say about it
smiff - 20 Sep 2007 15:47
dont rate this pub there was no totty but was okish
anonymous - 20 Sep 2007 14:24
A fab pub with lovely ales, the Ginger beer (5%) was fab! although evening spolit by someone a bit anal complaining about the fact that I was having a fag outside, errrr I thought all pubs were now smoke free? you can't please these people
anonymous - 16 Sep 2007 19:45
Did I mention that Hole Hearted is named after this pub;)
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 8 Aug 2007 00:21
May I be the first to congratulate Oakleaf Brewery for winning Silver Medal, with Hole Hearted, at the Golden Beer Category at this years GBBF. Hole Hearted, incidentally :), is named after this pub.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 8 Aug 2007 00:21
Congratulations on the baby and winning pub of the year! It's all happening! Had some of Grandma's Ginger Beer last night... phew... great stuff!!
SpecialPlates.com - 4 Jul 2007 14:06
popped in last night, the pub was being presented with the portsmouth Camra pub of the year award, and well deserved it is to, a great range of 8 real ales and 3 ciders. A great pub that just goes from strength to strength
littlecon - 30 Jun 2007 13:01
Sorry to say I have moved away from my favourite pub now.
Auditions are well under way for a replacement here in Glasgow, but The Hole In The Wall is a very tough act to follow.
Cheers to you & yours John. Take care

I don't know about "the best pub on Portsea Island" - this is one of the best pubs in the country. Excellent choice of really well-kept ale with a constantly changing selection of guests, proper glow-in-the-dark cider and decent selection of euro bottled lager if you like that sort of thing. The 5.5% ginger beer is an experience too! Staff and locals are friendly, while the decor and atmosphere is the stuff that your olde worlde theme pubs can only dream of. Highly recommended.
AMJ - 13 Apr 2007 11:26
Quite simply the best pub on Portsea Island. Very well-kept beer at reasonable prices, an excellent atmosphere and a variety of people. Best of all, the ale selection is the most adventurous in the area. highly recommended.
CJG - 13 Mar 2007 10:17
Great pub - atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, beer is fantastic and the real cider a treat

Keep up the good work!
swiftpint_25 - 10 Mar 2007 11:09
Would like to thank TheAlmightyLaLa for very generous comments about the Barley Mow. We all try to help each other when we can. Hopfuly with more pubs in the area serving good beer and atmosphere we will all benifit. The Hole in the Wall is a long established good beer Guide pub serving geat beer I hope that I can live up to challenge.
FrogandToad - 21 Feb 2007 16:42
great little pub, good range of real ales, real cider and belguim bottles. very good food at a good price. friendly landlord and a nice mix of customers, top hole.
littlecon - 26 Jan 2007 09:50
Visited this pub last year before seeing a show at the nearby Kings Theatre - could easily hvae spent the whole night in this great pub. Very friendly Landlord and other drinkers. Spent a while asking landlord about previous uses for the building - beer was excellent and food fabulous - reminds one of what pubs used to be like - also surrounding street is pleasing on the eye - almost Dickensian !!
musicjunkie - 23 Jan 2007 18:39
The Hole in the Wall remains top pub for miles around.
The rating system seems to be letting them down.
Probably one opf the other posters used a low rating without realising it? There are nobad comments toback it up.
Doh !
Molegrub - 16 Jan 2007 17:15
I'm back in Prague now, but I did spend some great evenings in The Hole in The Wall again during my trip back to you UK over Christmas/New Year. Again, I filled myself silly with the O-Hagan's sausages and mash. And tried the amazing alcoholic ginger beer... ooh, I'll kill for one of those right now! After two pints you certainly knew it was alcoholic!! Yum!
SpecialPlates.com - 12 Jan 2007 16:51
Have been the landlord of this pub now for the last 2 1/2 years and have always used this excellent site to see if we're doing the right things or not. Have never felt the need to post a comment until now though, how did we go from a 9.7 to a 7.1 rating, number 1 in the top 40 to not even in the top 40 overnight. Have seen the new number 1 The Red Lion at Snargate has had the same problem and doubtless other pubs the same.

Please can someone explain as I'm at a loss
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 5 Jan 2007 15:40
Lived in Portsmouth 24 years never heard of this pub but visited just before Christmas - excellent beer selection, very well kept, food looks good as well - too busy drinking to get to get to it! Definately return
smithmr49 - 3 Jan 2007 17:08
Brilliant place. Top beer and great atmos! You need to get there early to get a table though.Apart from that it's one of the best 'locals' in Portsmouth.
And try the Alcholic Ginger Beer! Is lovely, and has a nice little kick to it!
MattyRose81 - 2 Jan 2007 20:10
Visit this pub and you wont need to go anywhere else ever again.

This has everything you could want in a pub and more.

I'm lucky that I live round the corner from it, but I have never ever heard anyone ever have a bad word to say about the place.
Splodge68 - 14 Nov 2006 19:50
Re-visited this little pub recently... several times!! My family who live in the area now visit regularly. Great food at an amazing price - very filling - I'd recommend the 'O-Hagan's sausages and mash'! Much busier than it used to be which really helps with the atmosphere.
SpecialPlates.com - 27 Oct 2006 13:57
Who forgot to mention that the beer is still cheap, oh there we go! The guest ales change from week to week now and the Oakleaf Nuptuale and Hole Hearted are constant features. There's also a rack of daily newspapers to read. There's the occasional brewery/beer festival trip arranged through the pub.
Still upto standard etcetera, etcetera, etcetera..
Try one of the pie and mash and you won't have to eat for the rest of the week!
waltonp - 3 Oct 2006 15:17
I switched to this pub as my 'local' about eight months ago. It's just the job. Great beer and a very social place. I wish the music was more to my taste, but I can always plug into my mp3 player in between frequent trips to the bar. Can't reccomend it highly enough really. I was so rubbish at the quiz !!!!
Molegrub - 22 Sep 2006 18:22
The chilli & rice for 3.95 was good.

Wide range of beers. The 'Holehearted' a bit too perfumed for me, but worth going back to try more.

Small, cosy pub, almost full of locals midweek at 6pm, including some mad students playing scrabble and doing push-ups...
Wade1957 - 7 Sep 2006 16:27
brilliant pub. visit it and get plastered.
Twinner - 13 May 2006 12:22
Range of ales excellent in this dark and cramped boozer, sadly thats much like the clientel when I went in. Camra sterotypes ahoy!

No atmosphere at all, though the barmaid was a friendly and the beer was fantastic. Interesting to see you can get your orders in pitchers as well!

A place for a quiet drink and nothing more.
tomoliver - 1 Feb 2006 09:19
Visited this little watering-hole as a direct result of reading about it on this website, and was delighted with my decision to seek it out. Hidden down a backstreet, but worth the effort to find out. Oakleaf Brewery ales served in splendid fashion, and two varieties of real cider pleased the girlfriend no end. Good wholesome food at very reasonable prices, very friendly clientele (including the local vicar on one visit). An oasis of calm in the midst of life's trials. I can't recommend it highly enough.
ashhowe - 31 Jan 2006 09:56
The pub now serves hot food with various flavours of pie with mash and a selection of high quality sausages with onion gravy and mash. Prices around the 5 mark for a very filling meal. Well worth a try.
anonymous - 9 Dec 2005 10:58
The new "Bar Manager" has continued to improve on the previous incumbent and now stocks other guest Real Ales as well as Oakleaf Brewery ones. I've tasted some of the guest ales that the 'Ole has in other parts of the country and they don't taste half as good as they do in this Pub. This is testament to the continuing quality of this well run pub. Food is good and the regulars are happy as "Barry", especially if Pompey have won!
waltonp - 20 Apr 2005 15:40
Can only agree with the other comments. If you only visit one pub in Portsmouth, make it this one. Best pub in the city in terms of beer quality - although The Winchester, which also serves Oakleaf runs it close. It is a small pub and gets busy weekend evenings, often with the local Camra mob but increasingly with more svelte types who drift along from the India.

Usually has a small selection of Belgian bottles available, a rarity in Pompey.
SJC - 30 Jan 2005 21:35
Yet again this pub continues to deliver. Now added to the excellent beer range (two of Ed's brews plus Young's Winter Warmer) are a good selection of bar snacks served until 8pm. These include toasties, jacket potatoes etc and come in generous sizes with a side salad.

I meant to have only one pint when I arrived at 1945 but didn't leave 'til after 2200 having been engaged in conversation with the friendly manager and an equally amicable local.

Still a gem, and still gets worthy of its 10/10 marks - keep it up!
lad_newton - 18 Nov 2004 17:27
Delightfully unchanged since my last visit, and the beer, atmosphere and friendliness of this pub made it the highlight of my trip.

Recommended for Oakleaf Brewery beers, namely Nuptu'ale, Oakleaf Bitter (absolutely exquisite), Squirrel's Delight and Hole Harted (brewed specially for this pub).

Background music kept down to a comfortable level, allowing the pub to buzz with the delightful sound of conversation.

In many ways this was the best pub I visited in Portsmouth & Southsea.
lad_newton - 17 Nov 2003 09:45
An absolute gem. One of the most friendly pubs I have ever been in, serving some of the best beer I have drunk in my life. The Oakleaf Brewery produces some of this country's finest beers. The pub is a charming example of a back street local, and is definitely worth a visit. Met someone called "Bob" there - very friendly - during my visit on 22/11/2002.
