The Shears is excellent, and real ale lovers who appreciate it will also be pleased to learn that the Brighouse Real Ale Trail now has a new member.
It is the Pear Tree Inn at nearby Norwood Green. Typically it has very well-kept standards such as Teltey's and Timothy Taylor's landlord, but also charming guests such as Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Hobgoblin and so on.
The pub has been tastefully redecorated in much lighter, airier style, and features fresh-cut flowers along with a now-delightful beer garden.
The atmosphere is intended for the genial and well-mannered, and I cannot commend the staff highly enough for doing what is needed to preserve that.
If you're to the east of town it's perhaps a bit more accessible too.

Bit of a task to find but it's worth it for a pint. The decor is a tad inappropriate for a pub, as StephenOfBurnley says below. Pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon and I imagine that it gets much busier.

Hmmmm, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Excellent beer, (I had Taylor's Golden Best and Best Bitter), and the pub is in a fascinating historical industrial area. I didn't eat but heard people saying how nice the food was. Service was prompt and friendly.
But I feel the pub has been spoiled by thoughless internal refurbishment. What looks like it used to be at least two rooms is now knocked into one. Decoration and soft furnishing is what I would call "Wilco's Chic" as favoured by so called 'boutique hotels'- strong colours, lots of stripes and big flowers - and out of character with the history of the pub. It will look out of date in a couple of years.
Add to that slightly obtrusive and bland music and I feel this pub could be superb but is merely good.

Great pub even if it is a little difficult to find! Located down a cobbled street surrounded by towering mills this pub offers great well kept ales with a good pub grub food menu. Certainly worth the search!

Not far from The Shay, but you need to know where you're going ;-) 4 Taylors beers plus 3 guests on handpump. Well worth the effort.

Only difficult to find the first ten visits!
Absolute gem of a pub dating from the early 17th century. Up to 3 Taylor's beers plus guest. Excellent food, proper hearty pub fare.
Directions: Get a taxi! Or if brave, from station follow signs to the Shay, then head up to the block of flats and down the cobbled hill towards the big chimney. Or get a taxi.
