Back in Minehead again and headed straight for this pub! A decent selection of beers on, Sharps Atlantic, Tribute, Bass, an Exmoor one and Otter Ale, one of my favourite beers!

I was quite looking forward to lunch there having eaten there in the evening before, but there appeared to be no action in the kitchen on a Thursday lunch time.

Still, a great choice of beers on!

Bigger than it looks from the outside, large games area with pool tables, they serve a decent pint, I will be back next time in Minehead

I've visited this pub several times when staying locally.

It does it's best to cater for all, a quieter saloon bar, tabled area for food (which is good) and a games area, pool etc.

A very good selection of real ales, nicely kept, my preference will always be the Otter Ale (the red clip), which is usually on.

Always found the staff to be friendly too.

Avoid the Hairy Dog walking up the hill, and turn right before you get to Wetherspoons! Try this one first!

Very quiet when visited on Thursday evening.Nice pint of Betty Stogs, but pricey at £3.30.

Locals pub just off Minehead's main street. It's a fairly large pub with a raised seating area for diners, of which there were none on our Saturday lunchtime visit. CAMRA members get a discount off all of the real ales, except for the Queens Head Ale, which I had. Also on were Exmoor Ale, Sharps Doom Bar, Skinners Betty Stogs & Otter Ale. Didn't find the pub particularly welcoming. Followed my visit here to the Kildare Lodge Hotel (not listed on here) which dispenses 4 real ales in a beautiful building on the edge of town. But it does have the feel of an old peoples' home.

Hancocks HB rebranded as Queens Head Ale @ 1-80 a pint is pretty good value.
Not very busy, but worth a visit.
The_Heavy_Fandango - 21 Jul 2012 08:49
Visited on the Somerset CAMRA pub trail. Nice to see ten hand pumps, all being used, although none of the beers tried were in first class condition.
The pub itself is a bit of a mess, all fake wooden beams etc, and the pool tables and loud music dont add anything. Certainly not one of the best pubs in Somerset for sure.

Show your CAMRA card and get 20p off your ALE.

Had a couple of pints Exmoor Gold very NICE.

Quite an impressive array of hand-pumps, all of which (bar one) were in use.
Beer was in good nick, but the best bit was the very chirpy Irish barmaid who seemed to be kissing all the regulars as they arrived, and as they left.
I managed to escape unkissed, but I'll return and run the gauntlet again, no doubt.
No food until 1800.
The_Heavy_Fandango - 30 Aug 2011 13:03
Just to clarify my last comment - beer was 3 a pint and there was a 20p discount to CAMRA card carriers!
cheshirecat - 7 Aug 2011 11:51
Queens Head Ale at 1.70 supported by Exmoor Gold, Tribute, Doombar plus something else at 3.20p a pint discount to CAMRA card carriers. A pretty unadventurous selection of beer but it seems to be a standard Minehead one! The Gold was excellent - by far the best pint of the day.

Not very busy yesterday lunchtime.

As noted in other posts, very clean and smart after recent refurb. Had a Queens Head ale (at 1.70) and very nice it was too. Quite busy with mix of locals and weekenders.
Didn't try food but menu appears to be above average and 'restuarant area' was well laid out.

Lovely looking pub on the outside and clean and comfortable in. The only thing is the place is a bit too clean and sterile with furniture looking a bit imitation wood that somewhat detracts from it's atmosphere.

I tried the local ales the Otter and the Cottage Dorset & Somerset both went down a gooden.

Only stayed for 2 pints due to having the Mrs and the kid but couldve so stayed longer

Called in the other day the Exmoor Gold very tiered what a same.

Mike; We were told to find a table and the waitress would take our order.
Never mind, history now. I note it has been removed from the GBG though, not really surprised after our visit.
imdownthepub - 3 Oct 2010 12:21
The beer was excellent when I last visited, about 2 weeks ago, and the place is cleaner and better maintained than most.
As regards the dissapointment of the previous poster, I think that food has to be ordered at the counter, I dont think that they take the order at your table.

How disappointing, by all accounts this was previously a very decent pub with good food, not now unfortunately. I visited over 2 days and on both occasions was served dull, lifeless beers. We waited for food, but no one came to take our order, which was disappointing because we ended up at the awful Pinocchio's just down the road, another story. I wouldn't recommend this after our short stay.
imdownthepub - 10 Sep 2010 23:07
Interesting refurb here. Not sure if I like it or not. Spoke to some regular visitors who said they preferred it before. Still a good range of beers though. Will try it again soon.

Just like last August, 6 local ales plus Bass and a cider on handpump. 20p a pint off for CAMRA members. Beer was fine although not exceptional.

This place has had a lot of money spent on it recently - new toilets, extra seating area, new carpets and furniture etc, Still pretty quiet though.

Only real pub in Minehead, Great real ales never had a bad one yet. New chef and menu for 2010, not tried it yet but heard good reports

Came into Minehead for the beer festival, so expected great things from its pubs over the weekend, but was most disappointed in this one on Friday night. The Mallard IPA was like TCP, and instead of offering a different beer we were given a fresh pull of the Mallard and it was only slightly better. The other Cottage beer was fine. A different story on Sunday evening when we went for food, and found the Exmoor Gold in tip top condition. Food was great. The Steak Pie was huge, and staff bought me some gravy as I said it was dry - pie bulk packed with meat. Made a good meal great.

Very large pub with a very large selection of ales. Didn't have my GBG on holiday with me so we just walked around Minehead trying different pubs. Bingo the best one we found in Minehead by a country mile. Keep it up peoples.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 30 Aug 2009 22:02
Good selection of 6 local ales plus Bass. Tried several and all very drinkable. Friendly and helpful landlord and staff. Was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday afternoon - I'd guess that they've lost trade to the Spoons around the corner.
cheshirecat - 2 Aug 2009 11:52
Drawn here by the entry in the GBG, whilst on holiday in Minehead. The landlord and staff welcoming, and the beers good, with Exmoor, St. Austell and Otter beers alongside Bass and others.

We only paid two visits as when it came to food, the Steak pie appeared to have the steak augmented by lots of symetrical cubes of some meaty tasting substance, which, whilst providing bulk to the meal, didn't appear to come from the same source as the beef!! Mmmmm........not what I expect from a GBG pub.
JBGatelad - 28 Jul 2009 18:00
First pint was like vineger but was swiftly swapped for a decent pint of tribute, couple of pump clips were already turned which i guess was just due to the slow trade in january, still prob worth its inclusion in the gbg, 7/10
fat_beer_badger - 20 Jan 2009 20:37
Good choice of well kept real ales, note that the selection varies.
good food (lunchtime and early evenings)
Opens all permitted hours in the summer season, but not allways in the winter.
The Exmoor Hart and Exmoor gold are particularly enjoyable.
mikeholt - 19 Jan 2009 13:43
Late comment from September. Enjoyed a couple of Exmoor beers in this quiet pub.

Closed on a Sunday afternoon!!

Good selection of beers when I visited yesterday - everything I tried was in good nick. Very quiet though for a Saturday afternnon!
cheshirecat - 31 Aug 2008 12:36
One of the better pubs in Minehead, safely tucked away from the main drag and the Butlins gangs.
LickeyEndBooze - 29 Jun 2008 18:57
Good beer selection, but the pub is just too big for me to really enjoy it.
YoYo - 28 May 2008 14:40
large comfortable pub with excellent ale selection, good condition and well served.
recommended if in town
