After some fairly mediocre pubs in West Sussex, our 7th pub was a vast improvement. This is a lovely little pub situated on a bank in the village of Tillington. It's off the main road. So I doubt it gets much passing business. The interior is cosy. But the highlight is the garden, with lots of different seating options, including hay bales and a hammock. There are chickens at the rear, but no sign of the cats that are mentioned on signs. Only 2 ales were on - Dark Star Hophead & Harveys Sussex Best Bitter. Old Rosie cider is also available. But it's not advertised and is hidden away underneath the counter. The village was hosting an open garden day and the pub's garden was one of the set. Well worth a visit.

Still probably our favourite pub/restaurant in the area - food is always excellent but they still serve very short measures of their expensive, well kept, Harvey's bitter.

Lovely old pub. Superb characterful garden. Idyllic setting. Expensive beer (Harveys Best 3.60) and short measures at that! Come on, landlord; if you're going to charge so much for your beer, at least serve a full glass.

Incredible. Probably a prefect boozer. The food is outstanding.

Just spent a night in this lovely little pub. Having known it of old I was interested to see how it had moved on! I was impressed to see that Sam and Misa have obviously put time and effort into making The Horse Guards a place to go! It is small inside but then doesn't that lend itself to the 'Olde Worlde' feel. Selling home made fudge, biscotti to name two it has a modern twist to it. The garden is nice with seating, hammock and vegetable patch complete with chickens who provide eggs for the excellent breakfast that awaits you in the morning, complete with what appears to be homemade fruit museli which was fantastic (as was all the breakfast). The evening meal was delicious - looked good, tasted great and was filling.
I think it only fair to be objective in my review and felt that prices of food and drink are what you would expect in a predominantly affluent area that serves Goodward and other events that attract those with, let's say, more disposible income. Having said that it's CERTAINLY somewhere I shall be going again and would recommend it to anyone in the area. A definite YES place to visit.

Thought I'd visit this place as it's in the 2011 Good Beer Guide, and I have to say I was somewhat baffled. There were just two ales on offer, Harveys Best and Betty Stoggs, both fine beers in their own right, but both available in any number of outlets across Sussex (that aren't in the GBG). Seating inside is somewhat limited if you don't plan on dining, basically you sit at the bar or on a sofa in the corner. Service was very friendly, the barman was cheerful and polite and didn't have a problem with me being there only to have a beer.

The emphasis is very much on food, and to be fair that's how many pubs survive these days. That there's only a couple of ales on offer, and fairly common ones at that, is just the way it rolls I guess. I didn't try the food, so can't comment on quality or cost. You can buy local produce (fudge, preserves, eggs, etc.) which is a nice touch.

If I'm in the Petworth area again and just looking for a pint, then I'd probably give this place a miss. If on the other hand I was looking for a meal then I might return, although judging how busy it was on a weekday lunchtime, I'd imagine booking is recommended.

Just moved near tp this place, anf thought it would make a good local. Fantastic position and looks lovely from the outside. Inside was disappointing though. Looks like it was once a proper village pub but has been tarted up recently. More restaurant than a pub. The beer was good, but we felt unwelcome as non-diners. A real shame.

Just spent a night here. Excellent, very quirky, friendly locals, good food, nice, efficient staff. Highly recommended. Wish it was my local.

Failry discerning in our food reuqirements and this pub was superb under what seems to be a newish landlord.

Great character pub-restaurant with atmosphere in beautiful location and not too expensive either.

Have been there twice in the last two weeks (which says it all), - once for meal for two and was so impressed that went back with a larger group for a birthday celebration. Food very good, as was the Sussex Bitter. Its basically a friendly, characterful restaurant with a fairly small bar attached. Around 16 for a main course - is that expensive? - personally I think the quality justifies it.

The good news is the female staff are very nice to look at and pretty good at what they do. Also the Harveys Sussex is absolutely superb. The bad news is that the food prices are absolutely mental. 12.50 for a plateful of Sunday lunch- are you mad? This is a pub in a small village up a dead-end, not Claridges guys!!!!!

Expensive and very keen to get you out the door once the bell is rung for time.
