Called into the George on way to a holiday down on Romney Marsh.
Set in a lovely village, this pub is a true traditional English village pub.
I had the Harveys Sussex Best, well kept & really enjoyable. We also had lunch, the ham Ploughmans was fabulous, a full plate with hand carved ham & warmed rolls.
Wish I lived closer, I would spend more time in this pub for sure!

We have been to this pub a couple of times before but i must say it is just so consistant! It is allways such a pleasure to go there, it just simply has all the charm a real old country pub should with the added benefit of their amazing food. Its allways a pleasure, we highly recomend it to anyone.

Called in for an in-promtu Sunday roast, without having pre-booked. We were greeted by an extremely friendly bar lady, who informed us that although they were fully-booked, they could squeeze us in as we were early. We had the best pub roast dinner we have ever had - and I am very fussy about my roast potatoes! The food was absolutely excellent, the beer - we had the Harveys - was exceptionally well kept and the whole atmosphere, including the very friendly bar staf - makes it a place we will definitely return to

ABSOLUTELY FAB!
I was taken to this restaurant for my surprise birthday dinner and had such a good time! On arrival the staff were very attentive but would never had a clue it was my birthday surprise untill we were directed to our table.... a lovely private dining room off the main restaurant with a beautifull old table which seated all my familly (12) . The meal was really great and had such a good evening (thanks to the champagne) and staff. Thank you all.. will see you all soon.

I was introduced to this pub recently by some good friends, who couldn't rate it highly enough and i must say i agree. The quality of staffing, the selection of real ales is very rare these days but the quality of the food is just outstanding, the quality i'd expect in a london restaurant but at very reasonable prices. After taking a group of clients there last week and the excelent service given in the victoria room (private dining room off restaurant which seated 12 of us on a large old dining table) i'd like this opportunity to thank the manager and staff for their excellent hospitality. My only (constructive) criticism is that your website pics need updating as they do not do your restaurant/bar justice. Hope to see you soon.

Good foody pub, neatly done up, probably at the expense of some of its character but a fine looking place none-the-less. Apart from, it has to be said, the bonkers Spitfire/wolf pencil sketch over the big fire place (after the style of those mawkish wolf-moon-faux-American-Indian-twaddle T-shirts). A praise worthy choice of beers and the fish and chips was top draw stuff thank you very much! I shall return.

Superb pub for food and drink. Set in the gorgeous rural village of Egerton, the setting is superb and the building has maintained its period feel inside. They always seem to have 5/6 ales on - a few staples such as Harvey's, Masterbrew and Youngs, but at least a couple of guest ales (I go there fairly regularly and they always seem to have a new one on). The food is to die for - really high quality. I have had a number of meals there - steak, pies, fish and chips, Sunday Roast and specials such as braised ox cheek in red wine, which was delicious. I cannot recommend this pub enough.

We ventured out to this pub after seeing a review and must say were not disapointed. Great selection of real ales which was good to see these days and apparently excellent wines (so my partner said). Would def go back the food was absolutely great.

I have no aquantance with the management so shan't add to these obviously-planted comments.

Returning to this pub after it recently changed hands. Staff were very welcoming and efficient. Visited with my family for Sunday lunch and ended up staying all afternoon! New Chef, excellent Sunday Roast, great value for money with wonderful locally sourced meat and produce. Fantastic child portions of the roast dinner, the honeycombe icecream was Amazing!! Sunday afternoon live music creates a fantastic relaxing atmosphere. Definately going back for more as locals tell me the weekday menu is just as good!

We have eaten here with friends twice in the past three weeks, once in the evening and once for Sunday roast. Both meals were fantastic and great value for money. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the pub has an excellent selection of local beers and wines. The location at the top of the hill in the pretty village of Egerton is fantastic if you want a good walk before your meal.

I went to this pub with all the family for Sunday lunch and can highly recommend it. The roast was amazing and was good value for the size of the portion. There's a really good wine list which includes a nice white from the local Biddenden vineyard and a great selection of real ales from Kent and Sussex. The people who had a bad meal here before really need to go back as the new owners have done this lovely old pub proud and have restored it back to its former glory. We'll definately be back!

This pub has been recently taken over and it is now absolutely fantastic! The food is out of this world, the staff fantastic and most of all the new owner has taken the pub back to its oldy way. A must do visit.

strange pub this..the pub itself is a fantastic country pub in a lovely setting with no real competition around it it has a nice enough atmosphere, excellent for families and could be a gold mine if it put into the right hands.. after visiting a number of times i cant help but feel it could be so much more and its being held back somehow...myself and my girlfriend have eaten there each time we have visited and up until this last weekend(27th febuary) the food and service has always been spot on and perfect...this time unfourtunately the meal was sub standard and poorly presented the service wasnt cheery or welcoming and we felt it lacked its usual flair and flavour...we will be back in the hope that this was just a bad weekend or maybe the chef was away..having said that the bar staff are welcoming it has a lovely feel in the bar with the fires going and is very cosy, better to eat in the bar as the feel to the restaraunt can be a little straight backed and formal,
i do however love the pub,the food normally is superb, the staff are friendly and the feel is cosy,no lager louts or power drinkers makes for a pleasant evening, we wont be letting 1 bad experiance mar our return but i just feel it could be so much more if they found some identity to the pub and remembered it is a kentish country pub and not a cheap restaraunt, and then worked from there.....

I have visited this pub oin several occasions and it is fair to say it has more than one personality! The main bar area is frequented by locals - pretty much an older set of couples and at weekend lunchtimes families out for a pub lunch. There is a separate area with a pool table and TV where major football matches are shown. This is used predominatley by a younger set - still very much locals. There is a further area set side as a restaurant. The main pub area is very warm and welcoming. The area with the pool table is less welcoming and a bit noisier. The restaurant is pleasant enough although i personally do not like the decor. The food is above average without being stunning. It is however good value and with a new chef the quality has improved a notch. The beer is well kept but as another reviewer has said not an imaginative range. The Harveys is excellent (OK it is a favourite of mine).
This pub serves a diverse community, younger and older and wlakers in the summer and does it pretty well.

i was passing through this lovely village and was feeling quite peckish having seen signs for this pub we decided to stop and eat. the welcome we recieved was a freindly and warm welcome, the pub has till an old fashion feel about it even though it has been recently decorated. the staff was very freindly and helpfull. we decided to sit in the main restaurant to eat which was very warm and comfortable. the food was of an excellent standard and great value for money and we even had a free glass of wine from the owner himself, i would recommend this to anybody.

Looks like a village pub that has been turned into a cheap restaurant. Won't be back.

Having not been here for years, I ended up visting on two consecutive days, one semi-planned and the other not at all. Funny how that happens sometimes !
It was quite busy on the Saturday evening. They had a promotion on with set price dinner and a Jazz band ( shoehorned into a corner of the main bar, much to the disgust of one of my companions who hates Jazz!).
All tables were taken in the main bar and I assume, the restaurant part which I guess is because the food is excellent by all accounts - new chef, apparently.
It's a Freehouse but the ubiquitous SN Masterbrew was one of the 4 ales on offer. I avoided that on the grounds that I can get it any day of the week at just about every pub in Kent. Sadly, the rest of the selection was unimaginative to say the least for a Freehouse. Harveys best, Youngs and something else that I can't recall but was not unusual. I plumped for the Youngs which I have to say was pretty decent and a couple of pints slipped down all too quickly.
Back in Sunday for a light lunch. Youngs again was good and the food (from the bar snacks menu) was very nice indeed.
I'd like to come back for the main menu which I'm told is very good value for money.
Incidentally, no sign of any lager louts on either of my visits - maybe they don't like Jazz either :-)

I ve known this pub since the mid seventies: it was always a welcoming village local, which it remains.A white weatherboarded building , with great views of the Weald, it occupies a central position in the village. A large, beamed bar, with open fire occupies the major part of the pub, with games room to the rear. On the opposite side are two little dining rooms, attractively laid out.
Ive often said that I dont drink Sheps in freehouses, but last night the bar carried Masterbrew, Kents Best and Spitfire, together with Fullers London Pride. The Masterbrew was on excellent form, almost as good as it gets.I admit to being disappointed that there was no local micro offered.
There is a new family running the George:the menu looks good, though we havent eaten here yet, and dogs seem to be welcome. Im impressed. 7/10

This place is .... rather difficult to describe - too many contradictions. It's beautifully located in a very rural setting. So where do all the lager louts come from? It's obviously only a short hop from being a five-star restaruant, so why have the pool table? There's five hand pumps in a row, so why have two serving the same ale, and another two serving another identical ale?
And very commonly availbale ales too.
For pretty much everyone, it's the sort of place you'd have to get a friend to drive you to. If you're after a fine meal and don't mind raucous lager louts in the background, this is the place to be. If you DO mind raucous lager louts in the background while you're eating, try the Mundy Bois just up the road. If on the other hand you're after a quiet pint in the countryside, you're spoiled for choice in the area.
But if you want a pint of ale that you can get pretty much anywhere in the company of raucous lager louts, this is the place to be. But don't expect to find me there.
