Not much change from my last visit. Crowded with families with kids running around. Terrible service, mediocre beers and very ordinary food.

Visited on Thursday night for the first time in 25+ years!! Didn't remember the inside at all (has the bar been moved??). Anyway Good selection of ales on tap (straight from the cask) but I opted for the 'Burrow Hill' cider.....GOOD CHOICE, it was like nectar!!! Recommended. 8/10

re - visited this pub as its on the Somerset CAMRA pub trail. Nice pub on top of the hill, and crowded too with bloated chavs getting sun burnt on the first hot day of the year.
The view away from the beer garden is splendid and it should be a great pub, but isnt.
A large banner states "a wide range of real ales". This range consisted of just 2 ales, Butcombe and one other, both drip served from casks on the back bar but at least they had cooling jackets on (more than can be said of the customers). The service was slap dash, but the Butcombe wasnt bad. Evenso it was hardly an ale drinkers paradise.

Guest ales and ciders served from wooden barrels....and I wasn't driving!!! This place is my idea of heaven. Bonio's on the bar at 10p each for the countless dogs that run around the place (20 - 25 when I was there) What more needs to be said, people friendly, dog friendly and good beer.......Takes a lot of beating!!

It does get busy when (if?) the weather is good. Whilst I appreciate that that may not be to everyone's taste, it can definitely add up to a good atmosphere. (Whilst yet to experience it, I can imagine it probably gets a 'bit quiet'/bleak during the winter although I am more than happy to be proved wrong on that point though.) When I have eaten here, the food has been dependable without being spectacular. What really makes this pub for me ,though, is the policy of there always being three changing quests on predominately from local/West country breweries (as opposed to having any beers permenantly on). I have been going here reasonably regularly for the last year and haven't had a duff pint yet plus they are always served at full measure(something that does seem to happen a little too often elsewhere in general). I do hope they stick to that arrangement, or at least something very similar. Defintely a reliable and dependable real ale haven.

Very pleasant pub on the top of Ham Hill which has panoramic views across the wonderful Somerset countryside and plenty of walking in the Country Park and environs. The pub is a haven for tourists in the summer and is consequently far more attractive out of season. A friendly welcome, good range of ales and a fairly reasonable menu make it well worth seeking out.

I bowled up to the POW on one such windy and chilly day, and whilst I could imagine it would be unrivalled as a classic summer venue, part of me was pleased it was not high season, as one could take in the spectacular views and enjoy the isolated surroundings without constant interruptions from screaming children and the worry of trying to find a seat!
Extremely helpful and friendly staff (the barman helped us rescue a lost Goden Retriever that had somehow found its way to the other side of the fence opposite - apparently lost dogs are a common problem!), and generally a feel-good factor pervaded. Sampled some Yeovil Somerset which wasn't bad. The huge advantage of this place is that it actually deigns to open during mid-afternoons, which so few hostelries nearby bother with. If you're looking for a pub at an ungodly hour, then this could be the one for you. It is also an ideal way to reward oneself after a long ramble through the adjacent country park!

If you want to find this pub, and it's worth it, don't assume from this website thatit's in Taunton.
I guess that someone has entered to post code incorrectly and it should be BA14. which is near to Yeovil. Great place to go in the summer although it gets crowded.
