I like the Belvedere. It's a really compact pub. As soon as there are a few people in the bar area, it becomes crowded. But yesterday's visit was a little disappointing. 4 ales were on - Higson's Pale & Amber, Phoenix Arizona & Grey Hawk Pippin. There was no real cider on this visit. The Pippin was ok, but not really my favourite style of beer. Friends were not impressed with the Arizona. Nice pub. But the range and quality of drinks was disappointing based on this visit.

There was nobody in when we arrived here yesterday. But the 6 of us managed to pretty much fill the bar. 4 ales were on - Brimstage IPA, Big Bog Hinky Punk, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin & Greyhawk Casey Jones. All of the ales were pale and most of our party were happy. The cider was Old Rosie. Still a fantastic little pub that is well worth seeking out.

Very cosy, 3.10 a pint for blonde bach by big bog which was nice and we kept. Memorabilia about Liverpool's past, including the beatles, and apparently Liverpool beat 'London' 3-1 back in the day. I didn't read the small print, an interesting poster though. 4 ales on from a couple of local breweries Really tight in here mind. Good to come to but get here early.

Was back at the Belvedere early evening yesterday. It was packed and for anybody who has been here, you'll understand that it only takes about 15-20 customers to become packed. I managed to find a little corner of the bar to enjoy a pint. The 4 ales were Tickety Brew Stout, Brimstage IPA, Red Willow Seamless & Phoenix Christmass Kiss. The cider was Rosies Wicked Wasp. So I can correct my last review - the real ciders do change. A few people seemed to be drinking the Liverpool Gin too. I believe that is distilled here. The Belvedere is still a consistently good pub and tucked far enough out of the way to ensure it doesn't receive too much footfall. Any busier and you wouldn't be able to get through the door.

Wow what a fantastic place. Classic local pub with its 19th century interior intact. Good regularly changing range of beers.
Thought I'd pay the Belvedere another visit yesterday, after a brief crawl involving the new Brewdog establishment, the Grapes, the Blackburne and the Dispensary. The Belvedere is still a cracking little backstreet pub with an interesting clientele and a reasonable choice of ales. Liverpool Organic Cascade & Josephine Butler Elderflower Ale, Phoenix Snowbound & Coastal Angelina were the beers. Westons Old Rosie is the only real cider choice (on tap). Had heard rumours that the Belvedere stocked a changing real cider. But despite several visits, I've yet to see one yet.

A real gem of a traditional pub, always excellent well kept real ales and the home of the Liverpool Gin Company. Keep up the good work.

I recently did the excellent Georgian Quarter crawl on a trip over from Manchester. We added one or two more just outside of The Quarter and of the 10 pubs we visited I have to say The Belvedere came out tops. A lovely pint of Liverpool Organic, interesting clientele, helpful and informed barman and generally a lovely cosy feeling to the place. It was only our 3rd pub on the crawl after Peter Kavanaghs and The Caledonian and it took a lot of will power to drag myself away from the place. Can't wait to drag a few more sceptical Mancs over to show them the delights of Liverpool and specifically The Belvedere.
A fine little pub on a tucked away street not far from Ye Cracke and several other establishments that I like to visit on my trips to Liverpool from Ireland.
The staff have always been nice and helpful and the beer is well kept. It's a little poky but if you want a moribund super-pub you can always head to Matthew Street for a pint of eurowee.
Yet another snidey comment from Grizzlygus, who seems to wander from pub to pub, letching after young bar staff and making a nuisance of himself. The fact that there is only one pub in town that he has praised is a testament to his lack of taste/taste buds.
Over rated pub. Too small, and the beers ordinary.
Called in here last night - arguably the smallest pub in the North West. The licencee, who looks like a retired football hooligan, made me the best gin and tonic that I have ever had and my husband said the bitter wasn't bad at all either.9/10 for service and quality 1/10 fo rthe drunk in teh cirner who seemd to think he was funny when he was only being offensive.
Timewarp pub in terms of layout & decor, my beer was also good.
The Belvedere is a tiny backstreet pub that is very difficult to find, but awards those who make the effort. There are 2 rooms. One is spread around the bar itself, whilst a second is an overspill seating area. 4 ales are generally on. Yesterday there were 2 beers from Liverpool Organic, Brimstage Trappers Hat and one other. Cider is Westons Traditional Scrumpy. A great little local boozer.
Nice pub but the ale was a disappointment on our last visit. So was the attitude of the barman.
They claim to be the only pub in Liverpool to use oversize pint glasses. Well done The Belvedere.
Called in here for a swift half. Beer was fine, I'd go back even if it were just to try a "Scouse Pie"
Reasonable enough mid street pub on the everges of the trendy part of town. Quaffed a nice enough pint of Copper Dragon Golden here. A few too many Camra cronies in for my liking though.

Came in here on Friday 1st October for the cider festival. Only other people in here was the barmaid and a man with a dog.
A list on the wall featured about 8 ciders. I asked for one only for the barmaid to tell me they only had 2 ciders on. I went for the Gwent Ddraig (I think that's what it was) and then had to help the barmaid to pour it because she didn't know what she was doing.
The cider was okay but the lack of atmosphere and lack of any sort of festival was a minus. In fact, the last time I came here was for the cider festival last year and it was the same lack of effort that put me off ever coming here again. (see my review from 14 Oct 2009).
I went up the road to the Everyman Bistro where the cider festival was also taking place. Well, it was supposed to be taking place but you'll have to read my review of that establishment to find out what went on - or what didn't go on!

I like this place. Real mixture of characters seem to go in, from musicians having a swift half, to students, to auld fellas putting the world to rights. Good beer and friendly staff too.
Ideally there'd be a couple more handpumps and a quiz machine, but nevertheless, I'm going to this pub more and more often these days.
Was in here yesterday for a quick one. The place has improved since the last time I visited, and was also much more popular with the bar area being full on our arrival and nearly all tables and chairs taken outside. A local bring and buy sale also appeared to be taking place outside, with what could only be described as tat! The Liverpool Organic 24 Carat Gold was on good form (apparently) and was complemented by Tirril Academy Ale, Summer Wine Dambusters Mild and Thornbridge Wild Swan. In addition, they are now serving real cider. My pint of Westons Traditional Scrumpy went down well. I'm upping my score to 7, and I think I'll be back here a little more often.
Really enjoyed sitting in the small bar area chatting with friends we had visited with and one of the locals at the bar. Certainly a very friendly pub and we felt most welcome. Beers were Copper Dragon Challenger IPA and Skinners Best Bitter and both well served.
Anyone attending a Phil concert who wants a half-time pint should try this (after letting the brass section get their beers in). Charming but secluded (just off Hope Street), with outdoor drinking thats not on a main road or next to the bins (rare in Liverpool) it's a local sited at the point where Liverpool changes from shops and student bars to houses, and had a local atmosphere. Given the pride that John O'Dowd shows in The Lion, he'll be spending a lot of time working on the tatty interior, although the 4 handpumps and proper European lagers on draught and bottles remain. The Peter Kavanagh - Belvedere - Phil - Fly - Dispensary - Swan is one of the best and most varied pub crawls you'll get, and is nicely downhil after The Phil.

Went here on Saturday for the Cider festival (also held at the Everyman bistro which didn't impress me).
I've never been to the Belvedere and wasn't too impressed on my first visit. Had a pint of Hecks scrumpy (from the barrel as part of the cider fest.) Was a bit pricey, and, like when I went to the Everyman, I was only person drinking cider (not good when you consider this was a cider festival).
Interior of pub very bland and untidy. Not very welcoming, especially the bar area which looked very shabby.
Didn't take any notice of what the regular ales are on tap. Can't see myself returning here.

As mentioned below this pub has now been taken over by the landlord of the Lion Tavern. In the advert for the pubs in MerseyAle he asks for people to bear with him as the pub is refurbished. The refurbishment has obviously started but theres still some way to go in my opinion as the outside is particularly shabby, in fact the other half didnt want to go in at all. Inside its a very olde worlde two roomer with a fine old wooden bar in the right hand room. The room on the left has what could be described as an eclectic mix differing styles of chairs and table, theres also a couple of Bob Dylan posters but apart from that the walls are empty. Four handpumps on the bar two serving beers from the Betwixt brewery. I had a pint of the Betwixt Skyline which was very good. Its good pub that will no doubt improve again over the next few months.

The Belvedere has undergone an excellent transformation!! On many returns since the latest re-opening the place is just MAGIC!! The variety of bitters available have almost all been exceptional, especially from George Wright (Rainford) - the popularity on many nights and the return of dozens of locals old and new has the place feeling really special. The tasteful restoration of the interior has given new life to many of the original features and the hand picked staff are a very friendly gang. Great ( again ) and recommended. As one local of many years told me " We have our pub back!" 10/10

Still the same after the refurb, this two-room classic is worthy of any Liverpool visit. Situated in the pleasant Georgian area of the town, with cobbled streets, old fashioned lamps and great architecture, the pub fits in very well. The small, high-ceilinged, but basic rooms are very intimate and the place always bustling. The curved bar and etched glass are good survivors, and the real ales- usually Decuchars plus guests- always on form. The real fire in the lounge room is a classic in winter. Just round the corner from the Philharmonic. A proper Liverpool pub.

My first visit to the new look Belvedere and thank god a light touch has been applied by John O Dowd who also runs the famous Lion. A lick of new paint and some general tidying up havent diminished the charms of the old pub. The beer range is now one regional (Caledonian 80/-) plus three micros, in this case Skipton, Mordue and local boy Betwixt. The foreign draughts have been reduced to Amstel and Morretti. Beer quality is still great and the customers are the same friendly and interesting lot. One casualty of the changes is the wood fired pizzas.

Nice to see the Belv reopened last night. Good crowd, nice redecoration and a good range of 4 beers from Betwixt Brewery. All the best for the future John.
Been shut the last few days, including the weekend, so the promised refurb, under new ownership (The Lion of John ODowd?) asppears to be happening.Heres to a well run Pub, that is open, serving good beer.
Surprised to hear it is getting refurbished again so soon.....interesting
This 'place in my heart' real Victorian jewel will soon undertake a complete renovation and change of management. Regular opening times and 'as it should be run' service will be bring The Belv back to where it ought to be. If you are a fan of The Lion Tavern and it's "standard of excellence" then you will be pleased to know similar plans are shortly coming to The Belvedere..........
Small pub serving good beer, a little bit out of the city centre but defo worth the walk up.
Visited the small bar. Whilst I found it quite quaint, if not a little run down, the drink selection was poor. Being a cider drinker presented a problem, as they had run out of both of the regular ciders - Aspalls and Thatchers Gold. There were 3 real ales - Coach House Credit Crunch, Black Sheep Bitter and Betwixt Sunlight. The resident dog really took a shine to me! Stupidly, I managed to leave a bag on a stool in the bar. I returned 45 minutes later to find the bag exactly where I'd left it, despite the bar having filled since I'd first departed. Very trusting regulars!
A shabby looking drinkers pub, no TV or juke box but good beer and good conversation - magic. Unobtrusively good service. High victorian ceilings and some wonderful etched glass panels showing wild fowl divides the bar from a drinking lobby and what is essentially a sitting room complete with local art works. Unusually quiet this visit with only a few people in, normally the (small) main bar is packed. Beer choice Hydes as usual, the Copper Dragon had run out and there were also two guests. More unusual european beers on draught which are properly kept and served. Very tasty wood fired pizzas if you need a snack.

Small, slightly smelly & tatty this is a great authentic friendly pub it is certainly worth a visit. Outside seating area in a quiet hidden away street. Just the type of place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon pint & a laugh.
Great example of how a pub should be. Great ale, good service, friendly atmosphere. Even some art from local creative types on sale. Thoroughly recommended.
This is a hidden gem, tucked away in a cul-de-sac off Faulkner Street. Its like walking back into a typical 1960s Liverpool Pub, no nonsense, clean and cosy. Great range of ales available, plus staff very friendly.
