Carvery on a Sunday, charity events, executive accommodation and large function room.
Food prices start from £3.95 for starters (desserts are from £2.50) and main meals are in the region of £8 - 9.00. All food is home made, even the ham is cooked here and carved off the bone!

Paid a vist for a drink, surprise they had Black sheep on and, very nice indeed a few well to do lcals dining on the Sunday carvery, I saw laid out with prepack yorkshires cooked and on display for the rest of the carvery under foil. The menu seemed very expensive 14 to 16 pounds, and the standard dessert menu at 6.00 a pudding for run of the mill stuff, doesn't inspire. A clean and respectable place accent on food looking at the bar staff in chefs gear, but at these prices eat at Ramseys/Steins for the same price.

A mixture of styles here with an old-fashioned flagstoned, wooden beamed/posted front bar and a modern restaurant at the back. Not much of a beer garden as it is essentially the car park. Two ales from the St Austell Brewery - Dartmoor Best & Tribute.

From these reviews it looks a really good place to go but it seems the pub is under new ownership and things must have changed. We stayed for a week in the village and called in one evening hoping for a meal. We were 'greeted' by a very tense lady behind the bar who said they were not taking food orders for 20 minutes as they had table of several people in the restaurant section. After half an hour we were allowed to order and asked how long the meal would be.Very soon after this enquiry a furious little man marched out of the kitchen shouting at us and the other bar customers that... ' if people want a quick meal they should go to a place that heats frozen food up in a microwave'! We left. Nice looking pub, good beer, pity about the management! 'If you can't stand the heat......'.

Great - Friendly, warm atmosphere. Reccommended by the George to eat here - Fantastic! Fresh, obviously made to order, great presentation.
Spoke to the Landlady (didn't get her name), she is the chef and obviously loves her job. She is passionate about fresh ingredients and doesn't advocate the use of any pre-made sauces, meals or anything else but at the same time maintains that good traditional pub cooking with her personal twist is what people want. Ian, the landlord, wasn't working that evening but still managed to spend time chatting with us and served out our meal. (He obviouslly knows how to keep a cellar too!)
the pub has a lovely bar and great restaurant. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The locals were really friendly if not like at the other pubs in the village, a little drunk! (seems to be the theme!) But I enjoyed chatting to them all.
All I can say is it is a good job i don't live in Nether Stowey or I would be seriously overweight because I would eat lunch & dinner at The Ancient Mariner every day if I could.

A good, very friendly local pub. Beers in good condition, draft Stowford cider, and the food was excellent (in VERY large portions).
