It may be a Costa now, but it has far more daytime customers now than it had when it was a pub.

sadly closed now a costa coffee house

Yet another pub hits the dust - went into Sidmouth yesterday for a pint in the Ship to find it's now a Costa.
RIP

Haven't poped in for a while but just read the comment about it being
sold to costa coffee.
Such a shame that another traditional pub has yet again lost out to another
charecterless chain cafe bar.
However business is business and the strongest will survive we must use our pubs more or in 50 years they will all be gone

I am extremely sorry to say that this lovely old pub, which has always had a wonderful atmosphere, has been sold and will shortly be reopened as a Costa Coffee.

R.I.P. The Old Ship Inn. You will be sorely missed.

Had a lovely meal this week with friends. Meal was great as was the service. The Ship is an olde worlde type pub with a lovely atmosphere for a quiet drink. The roaring fire makes it that extra special, and staff were very friendly.

Went out for dinner last night usually go to either the Anchor or the Blue Ball as we are locals. Thought we'd try the Ship as it is a sister pub of the Blue Ball.
We both ordered Lasagne myself the vegetarian option and my husband the beef one. The garlic bread was not french bread but I actually preferred that. The reason I am commenting is the so called Lasagne. Just a comment for the chef really. Lasagne is either beef or vegetables layered between pasta and betchmel sauce( or even cheese sauce) the beef one had quite dry beef mince topped by one layer of pasta and melted cheese on top. My vegetable one was the same! Also when you dress a salad, make it, dress it and then plate it. Or what you get is too strong dressing followed by dry salad.
Very disappointed won't return or recommend. Shame as we are in a very strong position to recommend to a very large large amount of holidaymakers.

A very fine pub with well kept beers and lagers plus very good food. One of the best in Sidmouth. Staff all very good as well.

A terraced pub, with black and white exterior with central entrace, with pillasters and pediment.

The interior is again, white, with some artex and black beams. It is open plan, with several areas to explore and a food area upstairs. The bar is of a nice wood panel and there are some nice pew seats. Old pictures and memorabilia decorated the place throughout. It has a lived in feel, without being scruffy. The owner was really chatty and friendly and it was busy enough with a mixed clientele.

Beer; tap stuff, with Branscombe Branoc, Ohanlon's Yellow Hammer and Doombar - i tried all three, the first two decent enough, the Doom class.

I really liked it - i did visit in the day, but would go back anytime.

Has all the ingredients to be an interesting pub - good beers, historic building and right in the centre of town, but it seems to lack something. Not the most welcoming pub I've been in and seems a bit sad and dreary.

A regular haunt when in the area - nothing much seems to change here and that is a strength. Excellent Sharps Doom Bar bitter (when I visited - not sure if permanent) and reasonably priced food which was more than acceptable.

Not a bad pub at all - friendly welcome and well-kept ales (Branscombe). Atmosphere was only spoilt by a few half-drunk yobs - I won't let them put me off returning (unless I find they are regulars).

Must say I am surprised by Mrs Fronge's comments.
Went there last night and had a lovely pint of Branoc and we were served some tasty food. (Curry for me and Fish and chips for the wife and lad) Friendly service on a busy night.

By thew way, had earlier tried to eat in the Bowd......
Pub about half full at 7:30 on a Friday night. As soon as we picked up the menu a hassled waitress(?) told us that no more food as they have a few big tables and will not get them served.......

I wonder if the manager knows she is turning away cash paying customers. I sometime think we have to wake up and realise that running a business requires serving people and perhaps we can expect to be busy in the middle of the summer. Maybe that is why we see so meny places boarded up and the previous owners wringing their hands and saying that we have no trade.

Lovely-looking, ancient pub. I agree that the beer is good, but there I have to part company with the previous reviewers. I don't think I've ever felt less welcome in a pub - going into the Ship is so reminiscent of that moment in a Western where the stranger walks into the saloon that I'm pretty sure that I've seen some of the locals hurriedly taking cover under their tables! Seriously, this is an odd atmosphere for a landlord to nurture in a place so reliant on tourism.

The food in my experience has attained levels of blandness that invite some form of grudging admiration, after all, it must be technically quite difficult to remove every single trace of flavour from an entire meal.

For some time I lived only a couple of hundred yards away and after giving the place the benefit of the doubt several times (it's such a lovely building that I really wanted it to be a good enough pub to be my local) I avoided it totally for two years. Revisiting recently, I didn't find any improvement, alas.

good pub, good beer!

This is a very friendly pub, with helpful staff, to which I take my very elderly father-in-law. They accommodate his requests for food, even if they're not on the menu, and will obligingly provide extra cooking of vegetables, when requested. The food is reasonably priced, with plenty on the plate - never had a bad meal yet. Beers include ales from the nearby Branscombe brewery.
All in all a pleasant Sidmouth pub from the Newton stable.
