Pleasant enough. Went for a pint of Abbot. Barrel just about empty. Changed quite promptly. Czech staff. Seem to know what they're doing. First pint very cloudy & didn't settle, but I was thirsty and gingerly took a mouthful. Surprisingly tasted perfectly OK. Nothing wrong with second pint of Abbot, which came out looking good.
Seems they're about to have a complete overhaul of the range supplied, from proper ales down to lagers. The imminent demise of Foster's appeared to be of grave concern to some natives, but it doesn't seem a lager-lout pub. There are a few of those in Sudbury.

Only GK stuff on offer so went for lager this time.

Nice enough GK outlet with leadlighted windows facing the market square (or hill in this case as it's known). Bar at the front and restaurant/lounge area to the rear. Staff were pleasant - though there was only GK fare on offer. GK IPA, Abbot and Duke's Cambridge Ale in this instance. I tried the Duke's Cambridge (might not have had I realised it was a brew specially for the --coo--coo--coo-- royal pair). It was drinkable (just about).

Good beer, good food, nice prices. All in all, a nice pleasant pub. Had a really good lunchtime here and hope to come back.

Er, not so - The Black Boy faces the Market Place in the centre of town - the Brewery Tap is another pub in East Street.
The Black Boy is an ancient beamy coaching inn which has a good reputation for food. Two bars, the front being the public, the rear one more a lounge bar and dining room.
Certainly on of the better establishments in Sudbury.

Bought by Mauldons Brewery, renamed the Brewery Tap this pub has been truly transformed.

The Beer is excellent, they have six handpumps and several on gravity. Obviously all the Mauldons stable beers are present, but the guests are well picked.

The principles of this pub are sound. Good Beer at decent prices, no Sky or piped music only regular live music, not a food pub only snacks and cutlery and crockery provided if you order a takeaway to be delivered and lots of games, busy dartboard, doms and many others.

The pub is now very popular and has broken the mould of Sudbury pubs, for too long dominated by Greene King. The clientele is very mixed and there is no trouble at all. The staff are all very efficient and very friendly and any beer you are unused to you can taste before you buy.

This pub is as close to heaven as you can get if you don't want to drink in the company of lager swilling idiots.
