I agree totally, even tho' the post is over a year old. You should always avoid Braintree town centre on a Friday/Saturday night anyhow, unless you have a black belt in Origami. They breed them hard in Braindead, especially if there are at least 20 of them in a pack.
However, the best pub in Braintree town centre is probably the Waggon & Horses in South Street - at least you won't get you teeth kicked in and the toilets are presentable. Tom, the Landlord, is a laugh and you always get a decent pint, even if it's Greedy King. Well worth the (short) walk, and you do get to avoid the Braintree dickheads/Dss/scroungers/single mums/drug dealers etc.
Also, a good place to take the wife/mistress/partner, and it's got quite a nice beer garden. And it's handy for Tesco's.
I've given the Bull one a point, 'cos it has a toilet. Or is it a toilet?

Jay28 is spot on with his assessment.
Not one to spend time in unless you are waiting for a bus in the rain, or you are aged about 14.

The Thatchers Arms, Mount Bures
Hmm. I've got mixed feelinges for this pub. The trouble is, I rememer how it used to be - anyone out there who remembers the days of Gerald and Connie will know what I'm on about. The interior is a bit 1970's bungalow, but to be fair it is clean and tidy.
The views are excellent, and it's worth visiting for this alone. Oddly enough, the pub nearly didn't survive WW2, as a US Thunderbolt crashed nearby, missing the pub by about 75 yards. Also, visit the Norman Motte next to the church - no explanations - just do it.
I can't comment on the food, but on the few occasions we've been there it looks pretty good. I've had a mix of service from blooming excellent, to disinterested. I don't know, suck it and see I suppose. Maybe I visited on an off day.
