The Gardener's Arms was the first stop of a tour of Oxford pubs on Thursday afternoon/evening. It is a backstreet pub that has plenty of character and a decent selection of ales. Animal Salamander, Shakespeare The Bard's Best, Loddon Hoppit & Flying Monk Habit were on, alongside Weston's Rosie's Pig cider. Pumpclips line the walls, indicating a varied selection of ales and ciders. Vegetarian food is served.

This pub remains one of Oxford's best. Excellent all-vegatarian menu and selection of beers & cider - although the rotation of different beers means that you rarely see the same one twice. At busy times it is so popular that getting a seat can be difficult - more so in winter when the garden isn't an option.

Great backstreet boozer, tucked away. Well kept beer, always friendly staff whenever I've visited (admittedly only about 4 times over the past 3 years), nice laid back vibe. Never eaten here but the food is popular and very good, according to the locals.

I really did not like this pub at all. very poor service from a goth type who was devoid of any civility or manners. The menu was very expensive for basic vegetarian food that I could produce at home for a few pence! Poorest pub on what was an extensive pub crawl.

Have been to this pub many times and always found it to be a very good pub, friendly staff and customers. But tonight the guy behind the bar was more interested in his laptop, which was on the back of the bar. Therefore most of the night was spent with his back to the customers who were wanting to be served. Seemed like a don't care attitude. Do these people not realise that the customers pay their wages. Got to mark it down for this.

I've been in The Gardener's Arms a few times, decent enough place but nothing special. The staff have always been friendly but the atmosphere amongst the clientele has seemed rather pompous, my girlfriend and I were given a couple of funny looks (Yes, funnily enough some of us rocker weirdos enjoy going to pubs too!). On our most recent visit, we shared a calzone and garlic flatbread which were ok, but were both dripping with oil. Probably wouldn't go back any time soon but hey, it's not the worst.

Agree with others - wonderful atmospheric pub with good staff and excellent vegetarian food (not the usual sad offerings from the wholesale cash & carry). Selection of well kept real ale: Shipyard Double Thumper / Loose Canon / Brill Gold (Tasters readily offered) plus choices of lager & cider. Hidden away north of the city centre and well worth seeking out - one of the best pubs in the city and deservedly popular.

i wish to echo the comment below, i am a meat eater, but could not be more impressed with the vegetarian menu here. food is wonderfull. the currys/burgers etc., all great.
its up and out of the way, but it adds to the charm. stroll down an idyllically quiet street in one of englands most wonderfull cities, and arrive at a warm and welcoming pub. wood panneled walls, books everywhere, friendly staff, excellent beers, and food well worth travelling for.
the atmosphere is relaxed and elevated in an ox-bridge kind of way, but it is in no way pompus. its charming. and oh so english. love it.

Finally paid this one a visit, didn't eat there but everything else is spot on. Cosy unspoilt interior, good ales, and a decent sized well looked after garden out the back. Maintains a real local feel. I just wonder if anyone's told them most ales aren't vegetarian...

An absolute gem. As a carnivore I can say I wasn't in the least bit bothered by the all-vegetarian menu - and indeed, it's about as good a menu as you'll find in all of pubdom. Good real ales, a super garden and a lovely touch that sees the walls festooned with classic album sleeves all add to a place of a high appeal. Marvellous.

Hard to find if you don't know it. Good beers and the food seemed very popular. 2 rooms with 1 bar with prompt service. Wooden floors and furniture. Top pub.
|
A fantastic place. Excellent range of vegetarian food - and I speak as a meat-eater - and a variety of ales. Lots of books to browse through as you wait for your food and, as of Saturday, the beginnings of a DVD swap scheme. Pleasantly quiet. One of the very best pubs in the city.

Small and always friendly pub with a nice atmosphere. Often quiet, but beer is good and selection changes between visits. Eaten here once, food was good, often bob back for a pint midweek . Garden out the back gets busy in the summer but a welcome green oasis in the city, where you don't have to sit and watch traffic to enjoy your pint . Old record collection around the walls makes interesting decoration.

This is a fantastic dark wood pannelled little pub. Wooden floors and a mixture of wooden tables and chairs with a couple of old armchairs and sofas thrown in. Low wooden beamed ceiling. Real fire.
I didn't actually sample the Veggie Burgers, but I must say, they looked and smelled amazing.
I liked the unusual touch of decorating the walls of the pub in places with Smiths and The Wonderstuff (among others) 12" record album sleeves.
Thatchers Gold and Thatchers Heritage Ciders on draught.
It's a little way out of the city centre, but on the plus side, the other Gardner's Arms and the brilliant Rose and Crown are just around the corner on North Parade.
The only thing I can't understand, is the simply awful photo that has been used for this pub on BITE.
Well worth a visit.

A superb spot if you can make it out this way. Excellent cask ales (including Jennings bitter), one real cider, exceptional basket food and a pub dog to top it all off. If I could afford to move to Jericho, I'd live as close to here as possible.

I would have to agree with the three previous reviews of this great little backstreet pub. Ales have always been in good condition and there is usually something a bit different to try. The Food served is worth a special mention. Don't be put off by it being vegetarian - it is all really tasty and filling. The burgers are the best I've ever tasted (meet or veggie!!).

SillyTork is spot on with his review. Also worth a mention is the beer garden- one of the few in central Oxford that actually has grass and plants growing in it.
|
A relaxed back street local with a bohemian, student feel. Young and trendy with some arty types. Plenty of cool wood. Vegetarian food. A back bar has a bar billiards table and comfy leather seats, though as it is near the kitchen, that bar can smell of cooking. 4 cask ales. A very good pub.

Cracking little pub in Plantation Road, not to be confused with the Gardeners Arms in North Parade. Cosy and quiet with a good range of Real Ales. A really good place to sit and relax on the edge of the Jericho area.
