Marking this and the Fox the same and giving the same review.
Large barn like pubs in old buildings, modernised with some faux hint of the past, busy, foodie, so successful businesses.
Dull beer (Greene King type poo, Doom, Pride) and zero charm with nothing that I would expect a real pub to have in terms of ambience and fittings. Coulsdon you are welcome to them.

Pub not bad. Food pretty good but ridiculously overpriced for what is standard chain pub offerings these days.
You can see they have to over-price to keep natives away as they only start biting each other, but they've gone too far.
I'll wait 6 months for the next incarnation

Fab service and food and very clean, I would definately recommend The Tudor Rose!! Steer clear of The Fox just up the road - staff with no manners and very poor service!
|
This is a Mitchells & Butlers premises and a gastropub. Well worth visiting for a good quality set lunch served by smart staff.
|
Excellent service, very good food, better than nearby fox. Doesnt feel cramped and the place is really flash inside. Got a cancellation for mothers day for 8 people including 2 small ones, the staff were very nice even when one of the kids dropped a glass onto the floor and it broke. Definitely recommend!

AT LAST GREAT PLACE TO EAT IN OLD COULSDON!! This is not a pub but more of a restaurant. Food and service are excellent and the place has been totally refurnished since its shoddy Ember Inn days. The decor is tasteful, the furnishings thoughtful with animal skin drapes over the sofas. The food is fresh and tasty & is served by people who actually seem to care. The complete opposite to the awful, couldn't care less attitude of the serving staff at The Fox on Coulsdon Common. Prices are a bit pricey but worth it for good food and service.

I have just had our work Xmas party at the Tudor Rose. This is the first time I've been since the refurbishment. The pub has been completely transformed. The service was attentive and friendly. Food was presented perfectly and tasted amazing. The new managers have done a good job. Will definately be back soon!!

The new Tudor Rose is a vast improvement on the old pub. The food is all prepared fresh and me & my family really enjoyed our Sunday Roasts. The service was friendly & polite without being over the top. Overall a really good lunch in a really good pub.
|
This was good as an Ember Inns house. Now it's tried to go (even) more upmarket and not better for it. Too pricey. Too restauranty. Hope it fails and goes back to Ember - all part of Mitchells & Butler.

Rebranded again. Desparately trying to be a restaurant, but only succeeding to feel like an out of place wine bar. I'll give it 1/10 because the Doom Bar is quite nice. Otherwise nothing going for it, and once again Old Coulsdon has no pub.

Closed down for a while, now refurbished yet again, and re-opened as a restaurant/pub, although not sure about how much of the place will be used as a 'pub'. Looks like they spent a lot of money doing it up, and food not cheap - fillet steak + veg at 20 a go, small glass of wine over 5. I quite liked the previous incarnation, but heard that it wasn't making enough money. Don't know if they are going to fill a pretty large building often enough at those prices, but time will tell.

Poor old Bobsmithswig, does all that having to read cause 'brainhurtz'. The reason there are signs there, is to tell you to comply with the house rules, if you can't comply, go to the Fox.
|
Urrgh, didn't like this pub much, too many signs , saying dont do this, dont do that everywhere which is off putting. Nothing overly wrong, but not too much right.
|
Locally, this is probably my pub of choice at the moment. I don't have a problem with the service compared to some places it's pretty good.
Yes, it is corporate; but it does have a character of it's own . The food is pretty much what you'd expect from a pub chain and they do the usual Ember Inns Curry and Steak nights etc. Being a big old gaff it's rare in my experience to struggle to find somewhere to sit down.
However, what sets it apart from other pubs in this part of Surrey is the choice of beer. Normally (though not always) they do have a wide choice of interesting and well kept real ales.

To be honest, this refurbishment was a miracle. as a harvester it may have been the armpit of Britain but an amazing job has been done here. many people have gripes about the service but i have never waited longer than a few minutes to be served, even at busy times of the day, and always been served with a smile and some youthful characters who may be inexperienced but cheer me up with their unique humor towards customers and fellow staff

This place was dirty and miserable when it was a Harvester, particularly in the scruffy bar area, where people also had to wait in quiet desperation for a Restaurant table. The whole pub has now been re-furbished and knocked into one, but still has various small sections, where you can sup a few pints, and/or grab a bite to eat. I know that it is standard Mitchells & Butler, but the food is actually pretty decent, the steaks are as good as I have had anywhere locally. I have tried the London Pride quite a few times, plus Adnams Broadside, and Harveys, when it was on offer. The beer also went down well. All in all, it's a lot cleaner, the food is edible, and the beer more than drinkable. Perhaps it is a bit 'corporate', and could be classed as lacking character, but it is still much better than it was, which I concede wasn't too hard.
|
Its a world better than it was as a Harvester - now clean and welcoming, and usually has a couple of ales in reasonable to good condition. Food is also excellent. My only gripe would be the time it can take to get a pint, but I'm sure they'll sort the barstaff out sooner or later.

As I said about it pre-name change in BITE....
They haven't made it any better either. Now refurbished into an Ember Inn "desirable surroundings youd want at home and genuine friendliness make it the best Pub for comfortable and relaxed conversation" - M&B's suburban version of Vintage Inns. So out with the infamous salad cart, in with the pretend gastropub. Indeed all pretty smart.
But the service is, I'm afraid , M&B standard dire, just like before. Half the beers off and no-one can bothered to change them, that is if you can be bothered to wait for someone to serve you.
You get what you deserve for going in these places.

This is still the Tudor Rose, just happens that's it's owned by Ember Inns. Re-instate as Tudor Rose.
