The Salehurst Halt is a glorious pub! We popped in on a walk and sat out in the sunny garden as it was such a nice day but would have been equally happy to be inside. The staff were most welcoming and we popped back in for another on our way back. Cheers!

Visited twice at lunchtime this week. Excellent pint of Biddenden Bushells cider which took preference over the Dark Star options.
We sat outside with our cider and a cheese and tomato sandwich and were entertained by watching the traffic trying to pass (it's a narrow lane and only on-street parking for pub customers).
Bar staff were extremely friendly even though we were obviously tourists. Went away with a carry-out container of cider.

My favourite pub. The bar staff can take a while to warm to you but if you persist you'll break the ice. There's something about standing outside in the pitch black in a corner of England so quiet you could be back two hundred years in time that is almost impossible to find in the Weald these days. The beer is excellent. They're dedicated followers of the Dark Star Brewery and have most of the monthly ales at some point - though they do sell out. Haven't eaten here but I tend to go for the beer and the feeling that you're in a proper pub, run by people who care about running a proper pub. The Salehurst Halt is one of those places that makes me happy just knowing it's there.

Although it was possible to have a drink, most people were eating when we visited one recent lunchtime. And clearly they make most of their trade from food. I have to say the menu was imaginative and value for money. The beer (Harvey's Best) was excellent. One jarring note was the intrusive piped music.

The lack of a car park means there's parked cars along the narrow lane outside, but don't let that put you off. Having squeezed your motor into whatever gap you can find (without upsetting those living there), you walk into the pub to be greeted by a cheerful busy atmosphere, rural unpretentious decor and a delicious smell of Sunday roast! The atmosphere when I was there was definitely one of people quietly enjoying the beer, the food and each other's company.
The ales on offer were Harvery's Sussex, Hastings Blonde and Dark Star APA and from the assorted pump clips behind the bar it's evident they're supporters of the fine local ales available in Sussex and Kent. I only sampled the Hastings Blonde and it tasted spot on. The interior isn't huge so booking for lunch is a good idea and the menu didn't disappoint. I ordered roast beef & Yorkshire pudding with roast potatoes which arrived with green vegetables in a separate dish plus a gravy boat so I could drown my Yorkshire pud! It didn't take long to arrive either and the beef was nicely cooked (not over done).
Outside there's a pretty garden with extra space for quaffers and diners on the patio and lawn areas, and there's relaxing views out over the Downs. Service was friendly too and I left feeling relaxed and happy. Definitely one to seek out (and a shame I don't live a lot closer).

Has a beautiful garden on a fine summers day, with views over the hills , a ping pong table to mess around on and most importantly for me, well served beer. The last visit I made I had a lovely couple of pints of Thornbridge Kipling.

Can't add much to what has already been said. Been there twice now in short succession and looking forward to my third visit. And my fourth. You know when you walk into a pub and immediately feel at home? You know when you walk into a pub garden and instead of a bleak patch of grass with rows of picnic benches and umbrellas there is actually a real garden with a sweeping view across luscious fields and trees? That's what it's like. Throw in some fine beers, great food and friendly attentive staff and you have a really top notch establishment.

Tuesday lunchtime visit with quite a few people there already to eat. The specials board had a Mexican flavour and we choose from that. Very tasty too. Three real ales, Harveys Sussex, Dark Star Summer Solstice and Thornbridge Kipling. The Summer Solstice was an excellent beer for a summers day.

My favourite country pub,I had a friend who lived up the road and discovered this gem to my delight, unfortunately my friend moved away from the village so I cannot go as often as I used to. The menu is always a mix of traditional local, wonderful fish cakes and the different (Goat curry) My Joy is the Dark star and Bidendens cider on pump (potent) both beautifully kept. The pubs best feature is a beautiful patio and garden to sit and enjoy the views I cannot think of anywhere nicer on a summers evening.

I think this pub was probably the best pub on our East Sussex crawl last Saturday. It's a typical rural affair in a quiet village not far from Robertsbridge, with some interesting local characters. Flooring is a mixture of wood and stone. One corner looks like somebody's living room with a piano, bookcase and a clock. Beers available were Darkstar Winter Solstice & American Pale Ale and Harveys Best Bitter. Cider was Biddendens Bushells & Monk's Delight. The food also smelt very good. Although we didn't try it.

Went there on Saturday and was very impressed. Very friendly staff and some excellent beer. Well worth a visit.

Really nice proper traditional country pub. Parking a bit difficult, but worth a bit of a walk. Seems to be a community hub, but friendly to visitors too. Excellent beer as well. Definitely one of the top pubs of the last month or two, for me.

This is a neat brick and tile built cottage by the church in a small rural community just away from the A21 and the bustling metropolis of Robertsbridge. Inside, traditional bare boards, low beams and open fires, together with an eclectic literary selection. The Halt is renowned as a source of Dark Star beers, and today was no exception, with Hophead alongside Harveys Sussex Best, and Rudgates Ruby Mild, together with Biddenden Bushells Cider on handpump. The Hophead perhaps wasnt at its peak:that wonderful citric hit seemed to be missing, but was still a grand beer. I hadnt had the Rudgates Ruby Mild before, and was highly impressed with it; a luscious malty beer with a mouthful of dried fruit. A bit heavy for a traditional mild, but a classic all the same. As a community pub, the Halt sources its food, as well as the beer, locally as far as possible. As a noted glutton, I found the beef pie very succulent, and the burgers looked good as well. Im pleased to add that the beef comes from Sussex cattle. The rhubarb fool wasnt bad, either. Theres a pleasant garden , looking out over hopgardens in the Rother Valley. It seems to be a haven for dogs, though we left ours at home, it being the hottest day since last September. Well be back. 8/10

Nice country pub, super Dark Star ales and some very friendly locals.
Perfect you might think - erm, no. The service, oh the service or the lack of it! Slow beyond any reason despite there being 3 or 4 staff behind the bar on my visit. Even the regulars were moaning about it so it was obviously not a one off and one local even commented on how the landlord got off on ignoring people waiting at the bar and serving them in *his* time scale as he perceived himself to be so important.
Pubs like this never cease to amaze me, don't drink their and the management will soon get the message and either change or die. Vote with your cash & feet!

A great country pub.Normally having one or two dark star beers and harveys, all in very good condition, and even when the less knowing beautiful young ladies serve, they are guided by the barman to pull of a pint to start with.the food looks good and the locals are friendly, dont want to praise it too much as it gets busier every time i go there...great garden too.go in the winter and enjoy the fire.

Went there last night. Hadn't booked table and very busy. Nevertheless after being asked to wait half an hour we were served within 20 minutes. Service and food excellent - try the goat curry. All 3 beers very well kept, Dark Star American Pale Ale, Harveys Best and Knots of May. Most expensive 2.60 and the mild only 1.80. Great value and will definitely return soon

Chanced on this pub to avoid the Lamberhurst stop we usually make. Absolutely super pub, good beer, friendly locals. Will definitely re-visit. Meeting the cat and dog from next door was a bonus.
|
The definitive pint of Harveys here. Absolute nectar. Great little pub, unspoilt yet spick and span. Friendly staff. Lovely to sit outside on a summer evening.

Lovely country pub in a real rural location. Apparently owned by two local families after the pub was threatened with closure. Great views from the garden which is split between the terrace and grassy area. The history is quite interesting, this is hop country on the Kent Sussex borders and I'm told a small gauge railway used to pass here carrying the golden hops. Seating also out front to the lane and a single bar with wooden floors, and dried hops around the bar. Frieindly welcoming service, Harveys Sussex Best and Dark Star Summer Solstice. I could have stayed all afternoon. The food menu looked very good too, but so good to see its not sold out to foodies at the expence of drinkers unlike some other local pubs.
|
Probably the best pub for miles around. As welcoming to visitors as it is to locals. There's a large terrace and garden, (wood-fired oven in the making!!), so if you insist on bringing your noisy kids to the pub you can keep them away from the locals around the bar - thank you!
Food can be changeable. That said, I had one of the best Thai curries I have ever had the other week, you could taste all the individual spices - magnificent. Pizzas are popular and will be great when the oven is complete.
Very friendly place and as far as the beer is concerned, the natural spring which runs through the cellar helps keep the Harveys bang-on all year round. This pub has always been known for the beer and Gareth, the bar manager takes pride in his work. Always a couple of other ales on offer.
If you haven't been to the Halt, you haven't been to Robertsbridge!

A superb, unspoiled locals pub. Full of character with its own distinctive character. I understand that threatened closure a few years back caused the locals to buy the place. Proudly claims to support local brewers and food suppliers - which is in evidence from the ale ie Harveys and Dark Star, both in superb condition. And the beef in the baguettes comes from just around the corner. What a gem. Support it (closed Monday lunchtime I found to my disappointment but busy and clearly popular today Tuesday).
