user reviews of the Masham, Stockton On Tees

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Masham is definitely a local pub for local people.

I've visited a few times and, on each occasion there is a distinct feeling of intruding and inconveniencing the staff. They're certainly not friendly or welcoming to anyone other than the locals and it's interesting to see other visitors mentioning the same thing.

Whilst not amazing, the food is ok and the location is good. It would actually be a nice pub if it wasn't for the complete indifference of the staff, one of whom I saw being removed by the police following violence towards one of his guests at Christmas which was extremely unpleasant to see.

The Masham is not the most welcoming place we have visited.

The drinks are fine but the food left everything to be desired.

The main course was not as described. The food was over-cooked and tastless.

Very over-rated!

OMG ... Was last in the Masham almost 6 years ago (left Stockton for good in 1979, but have friends in the area who I like a drink out with, and of course my folks) ...
Yes, lovely pub, but you always felt you were intruding in a posh neighbour's living room !
If its become a "gastro pub" I'm curious as Teesside seems to be an absolute culinary desert, but the area is devoid of decent pubs with good beer and drinkable wines ... just hope the Masham delivers in its lovely village setting ... will try it out soon.

cant believe the comments on here. I live a mile away and have been into most pubs/bars/eateries in stockton /yarm over the last 20 years.

the Masham is right at the top of the list.

good beer,good ambience,good food

I feel I must respond to the unfair remarks made about the MashamsI Pub I can only assume the person responsible had a bad day. My husband and I have been going to the Mashams for many years and and find the people who work there and customers to be very friendly. The food is first class and we are always served with a smile no matter how busy they are. For those who have not been to the Mashams please pay them a visit and judge for yourselves.
They would not be as popular as they are if the service was bad.

Rose.

Having 'supped' there for over 40 years I have now moved on. What used to be a good pub is now a gastro pub. That I can stand (recluctantly). But since the running of the place has been taken over by the Landlord's wife & children it has become a place to be avoided. Piped music is now the order of the day and the place is run to please the staff. The customers most definitely come second.
Along with many, many others, once the lifeblood of the Masham I have moved my custom to a friendlier (& cheaper) establishment.

Very nice, small quiet pub. Havent noticed the locals been strange but im not one to care what others think. Amazing food and good pint of sheep.

If you're reading through the reviews of the Masham and you think "that sounds a bit like the Local Shop from League of Gentlemen", then I'm afraid you're correct.

The evidence is all online, no need to go and actually find out. We have a number of people all mentioning the miserable locals, and we have a local defending the place. It's interesting to note that the self-confessed local is the only person who doesn't mention how awful the locals are.

If you do venture to the Masham, you'll find miserable b*stards staring you up and down, tutting if you order a lager, and tutting even more if you "waste" some of their Black Sheep. You can't win with these miserable sods. I say leave the boring, small-minded, toffee nosed a**eholes to themselves. Let the pub rot.

Landlord's a bit creepy, too. Always checking out my bird.

I'd like to add, that although the "locals" think they're being loyal and helping the pub, they're actually hurting it by scaring off other potential "locals". Stop being so miserable, remove your heads from your anuses, and drink your drinks.

Very nice pub, would be much better for "transients" if the miserable locals would cheer up and stop staring at us.

What they don't realise is that whilst they are the "backbone" of this fine pub, if it weren't for the "transients", the pub wouldn't make anything near a profit and their beloved watering hole would be in the proverbial. Perhaps you lot should concentrate on each other and enjoying the fine beer - your pub might stay open longer.

Cheer up, we're hardly there to pinch your beloved seat.

Yet again this legtrailer distributes comments that are inacurate and inapropriate! As a local of this pub I find it very offensive to be talked about like this. All trouble in these pubs is caused by "transients" and not the locals who are the spine of the pub! The standard of beer is excellent and the ambience and this is to the credit of the staff and customers alike!

The Barstaff & the Locals,or,in this case, the Yokels, all add ,or otherwise detract, from the ambience of a pub.

Nice little pub in a nice setting, Black Sheep is kept well and food not so bad. Can get pretty crowded.

Beer is very well kept. The barmaids are usually beautiful. The 'locals'can be fairly hilarious, having the usual mind-set of people who only ever visit 1 pub.The relatively large garden area gets'rammed to the rafters'in the summer.

Excellent Pub. Non smoking and small. Food is superb altho not cheap - bar menu is priced ok but blackboard has starters at 3ish and mains at 7-15 good value but not normal pub fayre.
Lovely beer garden and covered out door area. Beer is good - black sheep and good range of reasonably priced wines.
Friendly staff - go a long way to beat this place.
davo44 - 26 Mar 2007 21:40

Pub ruined - it is simply too small to concentrate on food.

Black sheep is good - gets crowded around the bar by the locals.

Used to be much nicer in Denis' day.

Nice pub, black sheep is an advantage and its very nice inside. Has a large beer garden.

Food is good also.

Very nice little pub, however not being local (I live 3 miles away, may as well be from Zambia in the locals eyes), I feel slightly uncomfortable as the bar descends into silence and the locals suspiciously eye me...

But a nice pint of Black Sheep sat in the beer garden in the sun quashes that feeling.

Been in a few times when visiting Hartburn. This is an excellent pub with an amazing spectrum of regulars. Very solid, no crap. Enjoy your pint and soak up the craic.

I recently went back to the Masham and was initially a little scared at the slightly yellowy colour the building has been painted, fearful that the interior had been put through a dodgy refit...

Well, there has been a refit, but dodgy it is not. Some minor building work has removed the staircase which used to be hidden in a cupboard, which has meant the two rooms on the left have been enlarged slightly (which makes the world of difference to the back room, which used to be tiny). These rooms are now non-smoking, and serve mainly as dining areas for the extended (and rather nice looking) food.

The front room on the right has been opened up slightly (although, thankfully, all the mugs still hang from the ceiling), increasing space for comfy seating now the other two rooms have been given over to dining. The bar itself has also been extended back into the less-used small back room, giving more bar space. Throughout the main corridor and right front room, the floor has been relaid with dark stone. Even the beer garden has seen changes, as the first area has been fitted with two very large 'umbrellas' with IR heaters. We actually spent the entire evening out there, and were very comfy.

Overall, I think it was a refit that was waiting to happen, and it will no doubt bring in more new custom, especially for food. It is perhaps a little sad that the amount of comfy seating has been reduced, although the two rooms to the left certainly look comfy enough for a session once the diners have left. But, most importantly, the beer is just as tasty as it ever was, with plenty of Black Sheep Special and Bass on hand-pull. The usual pub fare is also present for the uneducated. ;o)

This is the definition of a Public House. It really is someone's house, with all the original features remaining! You enter through the front door, into the hallway, which opens out to reveal the bar to your right, and one of the front rooms. There is a games room behind the bar, while the left side of the pub houses a second front room, and a small back room. There is also a large beer garden to the rear of the pub for sunny days.

This is a Black Sheep pub, so the beer is Black Sheep Special on handpull, amongst other tasty beers. There's a nice selection of whiskies, too - as well as all the usual. Mmm, and pork scratchings... :o)

Well worth a visit - one of my long-standing favourites.
