A tram ride up to Hillsborough, this is just the place to start a crawl on a wet Saturday morning. They serve Castle Rock and several others in this traditional boozer. The large stage and collection of vinyl records on the walls leave no doubt as to its musical leanings.

A particularly fine place to while away an afternoon on non-match days, after one of the satisfying lunches served. Interesting period decor, fine ales, and friendly staff who know what they're about all make it a place that can be hard to leave.

Visited this pub today attending the Sheff Wed V West Ham FA cup tie.... superb atmosphere both for home and away fans. Great selection of well kept local ales all in good order. They served the usual kind of food and looked and smelled great... there was a big screen to watch the pre match footy. There are three rooms with a small bar at the front... which was easier to get served in when it got busy. Overall this is a cracking real ale pub with a good atmosphere, well worth a visit. Ph and there is a fairly big enclosed beer garden at the back....

As good a pub as you would expect of one of the Tynemill group. A visit to Hillsborough would not be the same without calling in for a pint or two from their well-kept, well-priced and well-chosen range of ales. Fast and friendly service with a good bustling atmosphere. The Tynemill "1 over the 8" scheme was well in evidence, the stamps being handed out without a request being necesdsary, and I noted that there were even periods when double stamps were distributed (unfortunately not when we called), thus giving a free pint for each 4 purchased.

Sadly the photo is well out of focus and does not do any justice to this fine edifice of a boozer. It's a big, solid building on the main road in the Hillsborough area of the city. Castle Rock beers plus guest ales; very friendly staff and a couple of rooms off the main corridor area (where most people seem to drink). Handy for the Owls footie and an easy walk from the Supertram. A great traditional pub which looks much today as it probably did a hundred years ago.

In addition to my last comment. Have I had a drop too much or is that picture out of focus?

A fine pub in the Tyne Mill chain. Landlord and landlady go that extra mile to make you feel welcome and the beer is always spot on. My favourite evening is several pints here and then a stroll straight up the hill to eat at Mama Mia Pepes Italian restaurant.
Having said that. We've also eaten here. It serves good value pub fare which has always been well cooked.

Great pub. Seems to have upped its game in the last couple of years. Went to the comedy night lately and had a great time. Very high quality acts ( much better than the city hall comedy club for instance) and harvest pale ale at 2.10 a pint to help the laughs along. The landlord is doing very well indeed. 9/10

About the 7th pub on Thursday's crawl, and a lovely pub worth a visit as there are always plenty of ales on. I have eaten chilli and chips here before and it is hot hot hot. Great food. Enjoyed the Bateman Miss Germany here this visit. Comfy seating and there were some chaps enjoying a game of dominoes. Proper pub feel to it.

Batemans XXXB, Everards Sunchaser & Beacon, Acorn Barnsley Bitter & Burning Bails (the Quest for the Ashes, 4.8%, 2.80), Castle Rock Harvest Pale (2), & Screech Owl (5.5%), Bradfield Farmers Bitter. Blackboard displays list of bottled beers and pressure draughts whose pumps make an impressive line-up (for that style) to the left of semi-circular bar, that side serving a sort of vault/snug (contradictory, I know) to left of entrance, Veltins, Leffe, Staropramen, Marstons Oyster Stout. The main curve of the bar, displaying the handpumps, is to the large entrance corridor, giving on to large open lounge opposite, cushioned wall banquettes, well spaced table/stool arrangements, huge Castle Rock mirror above fireplace with wood-burning stove, decent breweriana mirrors & prints. Another room to rear, bright, with windows to paved patio with picnic sets, dartboard. Menus here offer 2 for 8 (Mon-Wed) eg herb sausages & mash, chilli wi rice/chips, steak baguette wi mushrooms & onions, s&k pie wi chips & mushy peas. Board at bar announces Sunday carvery 7.95, todays specials: fish pie 6.95, large cod 9.95, wines 10-12 or wine of the day 6.95 btl (last week Marquis de Cantonelle, or Lutzville Chardonnay). One over the eight promotion offers accumulated discount. Comedy night 02Aug, tkts 5. Its a downhill walk from Bamforth Street tramstop, but the uphill rtn is not too painful.

Fine multi-roomed traditional pub on the A 61 North out of the city, going towards Hillsborough.

The New Barrack Tavern is a Tynemill Pub, serving beers from Nottingham's Castle Rock Brewery plus guests, which on my recent visit included beers from Acorn and also Atomic. There is also a good collection of foreign and bottled beers

Try the Castle Rock Harvest Gold ( 2.00p ) if its on

Tynemill has recently been voted Pub Group of the year, not for the first time.

Tynemill is a smallish pub group with approx 20-30 pubs, mainly in the Notts, Derby area, but with outlets here in Sheffield and a newly opened pub in York.

The main bar is bare boarded, but comfortably furnished and there's a fine collection of brewery mirrors and posters to admire from breweries, both past and present.

Externally, the etched windows and entrance testify to this being a former Gilmours Windsor Ales pub.

There's a pleasant outdoor seating area at the back, which has recently won first prize in the pub section of the Sheffield in Bloom competition.

Live music is offered at weekends and a Sunday night comedy club has recently been introduced.

This pub is well worth a visit

I go here occasionally at week-day lunch times, as I work nearby. Its nice, clean, basic pub with bar room, smaller dining room and snug. Small beer "garden" at the rear. You pass it as you travel out of sheffield on the A61(N) penistone road.
I like this pub. The food is always nice and fresh here, and reasonably priced. Always a good range of well-kept cask ales.
Some thing reliable in a world of so much crap.

We go in there each season when we're playing at Hillsborough (I won't mention the team!) I love the pub, a wide range of real ales and ciders. Good food, big portions! Well worth a visit.

We went here after the game at Hillsborough yesterday (CUFC). It must have been only about 10 minutes or so walk from the ground. About 10 or 11 hand pumped ales were available for our visit. The pub is owned by the Nottingham brewer - Castle Rock. The pub was friendly to away fans. One of the staff helped arrange us a cab back to the station. Although the cab arrived early he kindly agreed to wait until the time we ordered it for. This allowed us to finish the ales we had only recently ordered which were lovely. We tipped the cabbie for kindly waiting for us.

Called in following the Don Floods, and found it quiet so had a meal with my excellent beer. The hot chilli was certainly that, and I will put it down for a meal again. Brilliant.

Yet another great pub on the N. Sheffield crawl. Good food-good choice of beers-excellent for away fans as Hillsborough is only 10 min walk away

A very busy pub that I enjoy visiting on my crawls as the beers are in good condition and a good selection too. Never managed to eat here yet as I have never managed to get in when there is a table free, but one day....

Nothing has changed since the last posting a year ago. Magnificent range of beer - 10 bitters and 8 lagers, all real, on handpump and a huge range of bottled beers and whiskies. Decent, cheap and quickly-served food. Real atmosphere, crowded, but very friendly on Sheff Wed matchdays, but I suspect very popular at all other times as well.

What a superb place to drink, eat, listen to music, meet people etc.....

I have been drinking there for 2 years and worked there for 1 year and as I am leaving the area and will no longer be a regular I thought I'd do it justice. This is a pub which is underrated (thankfully) which means you have a chance of being served all week. Apart from matchdays (Sheff Wed), saturdays in the interlude between band sessions and the evening of last sunday of the month (Dizzy club play).....Arrrggghhhhh Get em in early! Quiz night is really popular but I hate quizzes with a passion, so can't give it a 10 due to it having one.

80% of custom is from regulars (at a guess) and they are a really friendly bunch. It's a popular place with young and old alike as long as you like beer and interesting people.

Finally, the best landlord i've ever met has gone, but the new one seems great too. Phew!

Fantastic pub, great beers, friendly atmosphere, a true gem.

Excellent range of beer, interesting and well served (if v slightly pricey) food, slightly offset by the loyalty card - buy 8 drinks get one free.

Also - food lunchtimes and evenings, non-smoking room, huge range of continental lagers and Belgian beers.

Don't be put off by the shabby exterior - this is a great pub with an excellent range of beers. The food (especially Sunday lunch) is good too - some of the best veggi pub grub I have ever tasted.

Good place to visit before seeing Sheffield Wednesday struggle through another season. Very trad, with lots of rooms and central bar with corridor. Live music sometimes - good mixed crowd. Also has very good range of real ales - try locally brewed Abbeydale Moonshine.
